This article explores the contested concepts of authority and leadership in the Church, in the context of modern cultural and social conditions and with special reference to the diocese and cathedral and the ministry of bishop and dean respectively. The need for ethical and theological criteria for authority is underlined, resulting in a model of moral authority, grounded in character, example and dialogue, as a basis for salutary forms of leadership. The current inflated rhetoric of ‘leadership’ is challenged by a stress on long-term formation and the call that may come at a critical moment. In conclusion, certain toxic models of leadership are held up to be shunned and some key skills and aptitudes are identified.

The future of the Anglican Communion – currently riven by opposing ideologies – hangs to a significant extent on the success or failure of the Lambeth Conference that will gather for the fifteenth time in July 2020. The Archbishop of Canterbury will convene the bishops of the Communion in Canterbury for worship, study and discussion. At the end of the day, the conference may address a teaching message to the Church and to the world. But the Lambeth Conference will not take any decisions intended to bind the Communion as a whole or any of its member churches. The Lambeth Conference does not have the constitutional authority to legislate for Anglicanism, but brings the bishops together to confer. But where does that leave the Lambeth Conference in relation to the 2,000-year history of councils and synods of the Church? How does the Lambeth Conference relate to the great conciliar tradition of Christianity? This article argues that Anglicanism is a form of conciliar, reformed Catholicism and that the Lambeth Conference is an expression of non-hierarchical, non-coercive conciliarity.

This article affirms the importance of ecclesiastical polity as a theological–juridical discipline and explores its connection to ecclesiology and church law. It argues that the Anglican Communion, though not itself a church, nevertheless has a lightly structured ecclesiastical polity of its own, mainly embodied in the Instruments of Communion. It warns against short-term, pragmatic tinkering with Church structures, while recognising the need for structural reform from time to time to bring the outward shape of the Church into closer conformity to the nature and mission of the Church of Christ. In discussing Richard Hooker's contention that the Church is a political society, as well as a mystical body, it distinguishes the societal character of Anglican churches from the traditional Roman Catholic conception of the Church as a societas perfecta. In the tradition of Hooker, the role of political philosophy in the articulation of ecclesiology and polity is affirmed as a particular outworking of the theological relationship between nature and grace. The resulting method points to an interdisciplinary project in which ecclesiology, polity and church law, informed by the insights of political philosophy, serve the graced life of the Church in its worship, service and mission.

On the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican Council, this article affirms the huge significance of the Council for the whole Christian Church, examines the ways in which the Council’s legacy has been contested by conservatives and liberals in the Roman Catholic Church, and recommends some resources for the study of the Council’s teaching. It concludes by noting the extraordinary power of the popes and other Church leaders, to set the tone for their churches.

One aspect of the chilly climate of ecumenism at the present time is the idea that theological dialogue between the major Christian traditions is basically a pointless exercise in self-deception. This article considers this criticism and weighs the extent to which the churches are already united, while being, in some cases, divided where it matters most – at the Lord’s Table.
