AbstractWithin the Australian political geography literature, a growing body of work has aimed to understand the distinctive socio-economic and demographic patterns that characterize the Australian federal political landscape. Using results from the last two federal elections (2016 and 2019), this paper analyses polling booth catchments in the context of stability and change in voter support. Polling booths are assigned to four possible types-stable Coalition, stable Labor, change to Coalition and change to Labor-depending on outcomes between 2016 and 2019. The polling booths are then given a unique spatially defined catchment which is then compared across a range of socioeconomic and demographic variables. The results suggest significant differences in polling booth catchments across several key indicators. These differences can be used to understand Australia’s political geography’s distinct and changing nature and add an important component to the existing literature.

In Australia, as elsewhere, there has been continuing interest in understanding questions regarding unequal employment opportunities. While aggregate patterns provide a useful overview, it is insightful to consider employment outcomes across segmented markets. One such segmented market is between men and women, where it is widely understood that labour market engagement opportunities will differ. This paper provides an investigation of these uneven labour market outcomes. It presents an analysis of labour underutilisation for men and women using panel data, taking account of both individual-level supply-side factors together with the strength of the local labour market (demand side) and the performance of the broader macroeconomic environment. The result is an analysis that accounts for the impact of changing macroeconomy, local labour market conditions and men and women's employability assets.

The objective of this paper is to analyse the socio-demographic and spatial patterns associated with bowel cancer screening in Australia. Despite the importance of screening in reducing mortality via early intervention, it remains the case that overall screening rates are uneven between different socio-demographic groups and geographic regions. Notwithstanding this, there is limited knowledge in Australia regarding the interplay between socio-demographics and geography in relation to bowel cancer screening. Thus, this paper explores the socio-demographic and spatial patterns of screening participation across Australian regions to better inform public health policy and programs.

Chancellor Irving Pressley McPhail of the Community Colleges of Baltimore County envisions his community college to be the premier learning center for information technology. To this end, McPhail has been busy trying to find the funding to provide the college system the necessary computer system upgrade needed for effective faculty and student training. McPhail is seeking a $5 mil increase in the college's $83 mil budget for computer purchases and has co-opted the private sector for support in the information technology endeavor.

The development of locally-based healthcare initiatives, such as community health coalitions that focus on capacity building programs and multi-faceted responses to long-term health problems, have become an increasingly important part of the public health landscape. As a result of their complexity and the level of investment, it has become necessary to develop innovative ways to help manage these new healthcare approaches. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been suggested as one of the innovative approaches that will allow community health coalitions to better manage and plan their activities. The focus of this paper is to provide a commentary on the use of GIS as a tool for community coalitions and discuss some of the potential benefits and issues surrounding the development of these tools.

The field of collaborative health planning faces significant challenges created by the narrow focus of the available information, the absence of a framework to organise that information and the lack of systems to make information accessible and guide decision-making. These challenges have been magnified by the rise of the ‘healthy communities movement’, resulting in more frequent calls for localised, collaborative and evidence-driven health related decision-making. This paper discusses the role of decision support systems as a mechanism to facilitate collaborative health decision-making. The paper presents a potential information management framework to underpin a health decision support system and describes the participatory process that is currently being used to create an online tool for health planners using geographic information systems. The need for a comprehensive information management framework to guide the process of planning for healthy communities has been emphasised. The paper also underlines the critical importance of the proposed framework not only in forcing planners to engage with the entire range of health determinants, but also in providing sufficient flexibility to allow exploration of the local setting-based determinants of health.

This paper considers the issue of the spatial patterns of socio-economic exclusion across Australia's metropolitan suburbs. Using an index of relative deprivation based on 2006 census data the paper argues that policies aimed at addressing issues of social exclusion must take more consideration of the links between people and place. The establishment of e-govemment has been an important policy goal within contemporary Singapore government. Recognizing the gains to be made by harnessing ICTs to strengthen and streamline the business of governance, Singapore has successfully developed its e-government sector across three strategic plans focusing on developing a world class e-government experience that will delight customers and connect citizens. This paper reviews the development of e-government in Singapore focusing on the outcomes of e-government strategic plans and discussing issues and outcomes associated with developing a fully mature e-government position.

Intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IVGTT) were performed on 30 anesthetized, captive Sumatran (Pongo pygmaeus abeli), Bornean (P. p. pygmaeus), and hybrid (P. p. ablie x P. p. pygmaeus) orangutans, and fasted blood samples were taken from two additional juvenile orangutans in 11 U.S. zoos from 1989 to 1997. The age range of animals was 3.5 to 40.5 years. Plasma and serum samples were assayed for glucose and insulin concentrations. Glucose disappearance rate (KG), an index of glucose tolerance, was calculated, as were the early (acute) and second phase insulin responses to administered glucose. The mean ± SE (and median) fasting glucose and insulin concentrations were 113 ± 16 mg/dL (90 mg/dL) and 45 ± 7 μU/mL (27 μU/mL), respectively. Two animals previously suspected to be diabetic were easily identified by their markedly elevated fasting glucose concentrations (380 and 562 mg/dL) and relatively low fasted insulin concentrations (21 and 14 μU/mL); their insulin responses during the IVGTTs were also low or non‐detectable. Without these diabetics, the mean ± SE (median) fasting glucose concentration was 92 ± 18 mg/dL (89 mg/dL). Two animals, ages 18 and 40, were identified as potentially pre‐diabetic based on age, adiposity, elevated fasted glucose (116 and 137 mg/dL, respectively), and elevated fasted insulin concentrations (114 and 217 μU/mL, respectively). In addition, nearly half of the animals of varying ages, all sub‐species and both sexes exhibited delayed or attenuated acute insulin responses during the IVGTTs, resulting in lower KG(P< 0.04) and suggesting propensity for glucose intolerance in captive orangutans. Glucose and insulin concentrations and insulin responses to glucose did not differ between females on hormonal contraception regimes and those not receiving treatment. The socio-spatial structure of modern cities is the outcome of many interrelated factors. One of these factors is the economic restructuring that is an outcome of the typical boom-bust cycles associated with modern capitalism. This paper attempts to identify the effects of recent economic restructuring on the level of socio-spatial inequality in the metropolitan local government areas of Adelaide, South Australia. Utilising census data for 1976 and 1986 the study uses correlational analysis to identify first the effects of economic restructuring on labour force status, and then extends the analysis to investigate the pattern of change in social well-being. The main finding of this study is that economic restructuring has had the hypothesised effect on both employment and social well-being within the thirty local government areas of metropolitan Adelaide. The paper concludes with a discussion of some of the implications of the findings for current and future public policy. It is argued that so far Australia has been successful in avoiding the emergence of a large urban underclass, mainly due to its redistributive policies. If Australia is to avoid the emergence of this phenomena it is imperative that the problems produced by the impact of economic restructuring on the urban form are rectified through the appropriate public policies.

Using data from 1991 Housing and Location Preferences surveys of Sydney and Melbourne this paper examines the main sociological correlates of residential mobility. The research was designed partly to test Rossi's hypo thesis about residential mobility, that people move to adjust their housing to fit changing household needs with progression through the life-cycle. The findings show that in Australia residential mobility of families is significantly related to life-cycle and the changes that accompany it. The findings are also consistent with the other demographic, social and economic patterns that characterise Australian society.

The hypothesis that spontaneous obesity in rhesus monkeys is associated with abnormalities in energy expenditure was tested. Obese (n=7) and non‐obese (n=5) monkeys were described in terms of body size and composition, food intake, and physical activity. Additionally, the relationships among fasting and stimulated insulin levels in serum, C‐peptide levels in serum and urine, and urinary catecholamines were examined. Obese animals had primarily abdominal deposition of excess body fat, as indicated by markedly elevated abdominal circumferences and skin‐fold thicknesses. Food intake did not differ between groups. Physical activity was much lower in the obese group. Obese monkeys had markedly higher serum insulin and C‐peptide levels in the fasted state and in response to an intravenous glucose challenge. Urinary excretion of C‐peptide and catecholamines was measured during successive 2‐day periods of ad libitumfeeding, food deprivation, and refeeding in order to examine potential differences between groups in sympathoadrenal activity and their relationship to insulin secretion. C‐peptide excretion was greater for obese and decreased for both groups during food deprivation. Urinary dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and epinephrine (E) levels were significantly greater for obese animals in all conditions. DA excretion was lowest during deprivation and E excretion was lowest during refeeding, whereas NE excretion was relatively unaffected by feeding condition. The overall patterns of C‐peptide and catecholamine excretion were qualitatively similar for both groups, and there were no reliable differences between obese and non‐obese in their responses to the feeding manipulation. The results suggest that hyperinsulinemia associated with obesity in rhesus monkeys is linked to increased catecholamine secretion and a resistance to cate‐cholaminergic action.

Grounding is a concept in Bioenergetic Analysis which refers to a person's relationship to reality. This relationship is thought to encompass all aspects of reality, external physical reality as well as internal psychological reality. Using this conceptual framework, an effort is made to link the somatic structures and processes to the psychic structures and processes which go into the perception and understanding of reality. In this paper that framework is applied to the concept of grounding in people with borderline personality organization. Experiential, clinical and theoretical data are blended to elucidate both the experience of reality and the structural underpinnings of that experience in people organized in this way. Clinical interventions drawn from this theoretical standpoint are described, particularly as they relate to development of the ability to apprehend reality more fully.

Abstract: Bronchial arteriography and embolotherapy were performed to control hemoptysis in 11 patients with advanced stages of cystic fibrosis. Two patients suffered massive, 1 moderate, and 8 mild but recurrent hemoptysis. The embolization procedures were performed with Gelfoam, Ivalon, and coils in one to four separate procedures. Altogether, 19 of 20 procedures were successful, with follow-up periods ranging from 9 months to 8 years. No serious complications were encountered except for one femoral artery pseudoaneurysm which required surgical repair. Rapid digital subtraction angiography and “roadmapping” were considered helpful in avoiding the complication of reflux embolization and expediting the procedures. Bronchial embolization is a life-saving procedure for severe hemoptysis in patients with cystic fibrosis and is considered safe enough to include the indications of moderate and mild/recurrent hemoptysis to improve the quality of life in these patients.

Abstract: A universal-length ureteral stent made of a biocompatible copolymer was designed specifically for easy antegrade internal placement. The doublelooped distal end of the stent eliminates the need to measure the distance from the ureteropelvic to ureterovesical junction. If additional length is required, a portion of the distal loop is incorporated into the stent shaft. Interventional radiology practices benefit economically, as the universal-length stent is the only size required for the treatment of most ureteral obstructions.

There has been a growing mismatch between household and housing types in Australian cities in recent years. At the same time housing has become increasingly expensive, while low-density urban development has meant increasing social and economic costs for households in fringe suburbs. This paper explores current housing and location preferences of Adelaide residents. The findings suggest that home ownership and the single-storey detached dwelling are well entrenched preferences among residents, and that as yet, the personal costs of the linear spread of the city have not impacted significantly on housing and location preferences.

An 11-year-old renal transplant recipient was noted to have a bruit over her transplant graft 26 months post transplant and 17 months following percutaneous renal biopsy during an episode of rejection. Diagnosis of an arteriovenous (AV) fistula was made by ultrasound examination with Doppler flow and was confirmed with arteriography. The AV fistula was occluded by transcatheter embolotherapy with placement of a steel coil into the fistula from the renal vein approach. This procedure allowed nonsurgical closure of the AV shunt without significant change in renal function.

BackgroundInternational literature has illustrated that the health impacts of heat waves vary according to differences in the spatial variability of high temperatures and the social and economic characteristics of populations and communities. However, to date there have been few studies that quantitatively assess the health vulnerability to heat waves in China.ObjectivesTo assess the spatial distribution of health vulnerability to heat waves in Guangdong Province, China.MethodsA vulnerability framework including dimensions of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity was employed. The last two dimensions were called social vulnerability. An indicator pool was proposed with reference to relevant literatures, local context provided by relevant local stakeholder experts, and data availability. An analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and a principal component analysis were used to determine the weight of indicators. A multiplicative vulnerability index (VI) was constructed for each district/county of Guangdong province, China.ResultsA total of 13 items (two for exposure, six for sensitivity, and five for adaptive capacity) were proposed to assess vulnerability. The results of an AHP revealed that the average VI in Guangdong Province was 0.26 with the highest in the Lianzhou and Liannan counties of Qingyuan (VI=0.50) and the lowest in the Yantian district of Shenzhen (VI=0.08). Vulnerability was gradiently distributed with higher levels in northern inland regions and lower levels in southern coastal regions. In the principal component analysis, three components were isolated from the 11 social vulnerability indicators. The estimated vulnerability had a similar distribution pattern with that estimated by AHP (Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)=0.98, p<0.01).ConclusionsHealth vulnerability to heat waves in Guangdong Province had a distinct spatial distribution, with higher levels in northern inland regions than that in the southern coastal regions.
