Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (Allo-SCT) is the only rapidly available curative treatment modality in patients with severe sickle cell disease (SCD). The development of reduced-toxicity myeloablative conditioning (RT-MAC) regimen and the use of partially matched family donors with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PT-Cy) have widened the access to Allo-SCT. Antibodies against donor-specific HLA (DSA) increase the risk of engraftment failure in HLA mismatched Allo-SCT. We report the results of five patients with SCD, whereas three with DSA, who underwent an unmanipulated haploidentical stem cell transplantation (Haplo-SCT) after a busulfan-based RT-MAC regimen with PT-Cy. To reduce the risk of engraftment failure, a sequential two courses pharmacological pre-transplant immune suppression (PTIS) phase was added prior to the conditioning regimen. All patients engrafted successfully. The procedure was well tolerated. None of the patients developed acute GVHD, whereas one developed moderate chronic GVHD. After a median follow-up of 5 years (range, 2.2–9), all patients are free of pain with excellent quality of life. Our report shows that Haplo-SCT after a RT-MAC regimen is feasible and safe with stable long-term engraftment and excellent disease control. The risk of graft failure can be abrogated by adding a PTIS phase prior to initiating the conditioning regimen.

AbstractThis study examines the interplay between the emotional appeals of guilt and pride with one’s accessible self-construal (independent, relational interdependent, and collective interdependent) in the context of mask wearing. Our findings demonstrate a compatibility effect between an interpersonal guilt appeal and a relational-interdependent self-construal and show that pride appeals are effective regardless of one’s accessible self-construal but may be particularly effective when combined with an ad that highlights a collective-interdependent self-construal. Further, findings suggest that evoking a collective-interdependent self-construal is particularly effective when it comes to behavioral intention (mask-wearing intention) because it elicits greater intention with both guilt and pride appeals. In addition, this work is the first to investigate collective-interdependent self-construal in advertising. Both theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed.

Arterial lactate, mixed venous O2saturation, venous minus arterial CO2partial pressure (Pv-aCO2) and the ratio between this gradient and the arterial minus venous oxygen content (Pv-aCO2/Ca-vO2) were proposed as markers of tissue hypoperfusion and oxygenation. The main goals were to characterize the determinants of Pv-aCO2and Pv-aCO2/Ca-vO2, and the interchangeability of the variables calculated from mixed and central venous samples.

Haploidentical stem cell transplantation (Haplo-SCT) using non-myeloablative conditioning regimen (NMAC) has extended the feasibility of allogeneic transplantation, notably in older patients. However, there is few data specifically focusing on patients aged 70 years and over with AML and MDS. Thus the benefit of transplantation in this population is still debated. Here we report our single center experience of peripheral blood Haplo-SCT with NMAC and post-transplantation cyclophosphamide in AML and MDS patients aged 70 years and over. We analyzed 50 patients (27 AML, 23 MDS) with a median age of 72 years (70–77), 12/50 (24%) with active disease at Haplo-SCT. Cumulative incidence of grade 3–4 acute and moderate or severe chronic GVHD were 6% and 25%, respectively. Non-relapse mortality (NRM) at day +100 was 0%. NRM, relapse, PFS and OS at 3 years were 16%, 18%, 66%, and 69%, respectively. Among patients who were disease free at 2 years post Haplo-SCT, 88% are living without immunosuppressive treatment. Peripheral blood Haplo-SCT is feasible in selected AML/MDS patients over 70 years, without any early NRM. It produces long-term disease control and survival. Thus, age by itself should not be considered as a formal barrier to Haplo-SCT.

MDS/CMML are diseases typically observed in older individuals, and conventional intensive chemotherapy often proves ineffective for them. While treatments like HMA and promising new drugs can offer initial disease control, they do not yield high cure rates. Allogeneic HSCT (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation) has shown potential in achieving better outcomes but is underutilized in elderly patients. Concerns revolve around its perceived toxicity with traditional procedures and inefficiency with lower-intensity approaches. This hesitancy is fueled by a lack of up-to-date data specific to this population, as existing reports often combine data from both young and elderly patients or pertain to treatments administered long ago, missing out on recent advancements in transplantation.

The objective of the research reported in this article was to evaluate the usefulness of supplemental videos in the advertising and public relations (PR) classroom, featuring luminaries in these same fields. Students in an introductory course in advertising and PR were given an assignment based on videos from an online library of short videos. Through a survey, students shared their attitudes and open-ended opinions toward the assignment and the videos. The findings suggest that having an assignment that incorporated videos was a useful addition to stimulate students' understanding of course materials. The videos were regarded positively along a number of important dimensions and motivated students to learn more about the advertising industry. This paper also includes five suggestions for incorporating the videos in an instructional setting.

La corrosion-érosion est un cas particulier de corrosion généralisée des aciers au carbone se produisant à des températures supérieures à 150°C au contact d'un fluide en écoulement. Ce phénomène apparaît dans le circuit secondaire des centrales REP (Réacteurs à Eau Pressurisée) et conduit à des pertes d'épaisseur et à terme à la rupture des composants en service. Dans le cadre de ce travail, nous nous sommes intéressés à la caractérisation des couches d'oxydes métalliques formées dans les conditions physico-chimiques régnant dans le circuit secondaire (eau déminéralisée et dégazée sous pression contenant divers réactifs alcalins). Pour ce faire, des études ont été conduites par spectrométrie d'émission X induite par excitation électronique de basse énergie (LEEIXS), diffraction des rayons X, microscopie électronique à balayage (MEB) et microscopie à force atomique (AFM). Elles permettent d'accéder à la nature de l'oxyde superficiel et de mettre en évidence l'effet de l'ajout du réactif alcalin (hydrazine) sur la composition chimique et la morphologie de cet oxyde. L'utilisation de la spectrométrie à décharge luminescente (SDL) a permis de mettre en évidence la complémentarité des méthodes employées et les limites de chacune d'elles lorsqu'elles sont employées séparément.

Electrical conductivity, thermoelectrical power and thermal conductivity measurements on boron carbide samples show that the electrical conductivity follows the small polaron hopping theory and that thermal conductivity occurs by phonon diffusion. The evolution of these properties with carbon content illustrates the particular role played by the 13.3 at% C compound in the phase homogeneity range B10.5C to B4C. The value of the figure of merit (0.85×10-3 K at 1250 K) proves that this particular boron carbide compound could be a very interesting candidate material for high-temperature thermoelectrical conversion.

In an open, clinical trial comprising a total of 21 depressed in-patients (6 men and 15 women) citalopram was administered in doses of 20–60 mg once daily for a period of at least 3 weeks. Fourteen of the patients were treated for 4 weeks, and 6 of these patients were treated for another 2 weeks.

Abstract: This study was done in order to construct a simple clinical failer predictor model, which quantifies risk for the individual elderly patient. Fifty patients sequentially admitted to a geriatric assessment unit were assessed systematically at admission for six potential failer risk factors: age, gait, speed, gait quality, gender, symptoms of urinary urgency, and symptoms of dizziness. Falls were systematically recorded during admission. Only age, abnormal gait, and self-selected gait speed were found to be associated with fallers. Multivariate analysis revealed that the two best models for predicting those most likely to be fallers were the factor subgroups: 1) age plus gait quality, and 2) age plus gait speed. The difference between the two models is the choice of gait measure incorporated. Gait speed is a continuous quantitative variable with no known limit of normal. Gait quality is a qualitative variable where abnormal gait is defined by clinical criteria. The predictability of each model was verified in another population (N=78).

Introduction:

Most of adult Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) regimens have been adapted from intensive chemotherapy pediatric protocols, and addition of rituximab seems to improve prognosis and survival. Because of its low incidence in adults, most of the studies concerning BL are multicentric. Therefore, we conducted a single center analysis to evaluate efficacy and long-term outcome of adult patients with BL who received intensive chemotherapy with rituximab compared to those who received chemotherapy alone.
