This comment is intended to provide clarifications on the tsunami warning operational procedures followed by the Hellenic National Tsunami Warning Centre (NOA-HLNTWC), one of the Tsunami Service Providers of the North-Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and connected seas Tsunami Warning System (NEAMTWS), after the May 2nd, 2020 South Crete earthquake, which are critically analyzed by Hassan et al. (Mediterr Geosci Rev, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1007/s42990-022-00094-9). More specifically, clarifications are provided on (1) the estimated magnitude used in the Initial tsunami message, and (2) the operational procedures followed in issuing the Ongoing tsunami message by NOA-HLNTWC for the particular tsunami event. Finally, general comments are provided on the critical analysis of Hassan et al. (Mediterr Geosci Rev, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1007/s42990-022-00094-9) and on the unique operational challenges posed by the tsunami event on May 2nd, 2020.
