OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical findings in the first 1000 veterans seen in the Ministry of Defence's Gulf war medical assessment programme to examine whether there was a particular illness related to service in the Gulf. DESIGN: Case series of 1000 veterans who presented to the programme between 11 October 1993 and 24 February 1997. SUBJECTS: Gulf war veterans. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Diagnosis of veterans' conditions according to ICD-10 (international classification of diseases, 10th revision). Cases referred for psychiatric assessment were reviewed for available diagnostic information from consultant psychiatrists. RESULTS: 588 (59%) veterans had more than one diagnosed condition, 387 (39%) had at least one condition for which no firm somatic or psychological diagnosis could be given, and in 90 (9%) veterans no other main diagnosis was made. Conditions characterised by fatigue were found in 239 (24%) of patients. At least 190 (19%) patients had a psychiatric condition, which in over half was due to post-traumatic stress disorder. Musculoskeletal disorders and respiratory conditions were also found to be relatively common (in 182 (18%) and 155 (16%) patients respectively). CONCLUSION: Many Gulf war veterans had a wide variety of symptoms. This initial review shows no evidence of a single illness, psychological or physical, to explain the pattern of symptoms seen in veterans in the assessment programme. As the veterans assessed by the programme were all self selected, the prevalence of illness in Gulf war veterans cannot be determined from this study. Furthermore, it is not known whether the veterans in this study were representative of sick veterans as a group.

We discuss macroscopic form factors generated using the Lane equations, and microscopic form factors generated using a complex effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, in terms of their similarities, differences, and relative successes in describing experimental data for90Zr(p, n)90NbA and91Zr(p, n)91NbA from 22 to 40 MeV. Our conclusions are that the (p, n) cross sections are insensitive to the precise nature of the form factor, so long as it is complex and has an imaginary part which is surface peaked. Such a form factor results from all of the prescriptions we discuss.

The reactions93Nb(p, p)93Nb,93Nb(p, n)93Mo, and93Nb(p, p′) through isobaric analog resonances in94Mo have been used to study the structure of low-lying93Nb states, specifically the degree to which these states can be described as single protons coupled to the core states of92Zr. Excitation curves were obtained from 5.8 to 7.6 MeV incident proton energy, for eight states in93Nb. Results of this work are compared to results from Coulomb excitation studies,93Nb(n, n′γ),93Nb(d,p),92Zr(3He,d),94Mo(d,3He) and other related work.

An analysis is presented of 30.2 MeV92Mo(τ, d)93TcAangular distributions for seven isobaric analog resonances in93TcA, using complex energy eigenstates to provide single-particle resonance state functions as form factors for the DWBA calculations. Details of the computation and use of complex energy eigenstates or Gamov functions are given, and results of the analysis are compared both with previous92Mo(d,p)93Mo studies and with previous analyses of the isobaric analog resonances. It is stressed that Gamov functions make possible a simple and elegant description of direct reactions populating either single particle or isobaric analog resonances.

The88Sr(d, n∼p)88Sr cross section has been measured at 170 ° for deuteron energies from 7.5 to 10.0 MeV, and the total88Sr(d, n∼p) cross section obtained. The total cross section is compared with results of coupled-channel Born approximation calculations using both empirical and shell-model-reaction-theory form factors to describe the decaying isobaric analog state. It is shown also that the new data and calculations are consistent with earlier88Sr(d, p)89Sr data.

The (p, α) reaction was studied on a208Pb target at 16.475 MeV. Nineteen states were observed in205Tl, up to 3.6 MeV in excitation. Angular distributions were obtained for five strong proton-hole transitions, and DWBA fits made to determineljvalues. Results are compared with previous206Pb(t, α)205Tl,206Pb(d,3He)205Tl,205Tl(p, p′), and205Tl(n, n′) work.

An assertion made in a recent paper dealing with the28Si(3He,d) reaction to the 1/2+ ground state of29P, namely that the spectroscopic factor extracted in the conventional way using DWBA analyses has a strong energy dependence, is shown to be due to a complication of inconsistent DWBA analyses by various authors, rather than being due to any intrinsic feature of the28Si(3He,d) reaction mechanism.
