- Abstract
Monkeypox (mpox) is an orthopoxviral zoonotic disease with a similar but less severe clinical presentation as smallpox. However, immunocompromised patients such as solid organ transplant recipients are at higher risk of developing severe forms of the disease. Herein, we describe the case of a 43-year-old female kidney transplant recipient that manifested severe skin ulcers alongside nodular lung opacities and pleural effusion attributed directly to the monkeypox virus. Notwithstanding the initiation of early treatment with tecovirimat, a satisfactory response was not achieved until a reduction in immunosuppression to everolimus monotherapy, coupled with the transition to cidofovir for antiviral treatment. In conclusion, mpox has the potential to produce a severe form of systemic infection in individuals who have undergone solid organ transplantation, demanding a meticulous approach involving sequential antiviral treatment and modifications to immunosuppressive regimens in order to achieve complete healing.

- Abstract
Numerical simulations were performed in this work to assess the impact of the ratio of live-to-dead load (ρ) and the stiffness variability of the constitutive materials on the accidental torsional response of buildings. Three values of ρ(0.2, 0.5 and 0.8) and two materials (reinforced concrete and steel) were studied. Story drifts and ductility demands were the main structural response parameters analyzed to evaluate the significance of both variables. Six structural models, representative of frame buildings with different lateral vibration periods (0.25 to 1.5 s), were subjected to five earthquake ground motions recorded on firm soils. With the Monte Carlo method, the intensity and location of the live load, as well as the flexural stiffness of the structural members, were randomly varied to simulate building cases with accidental torsion. According to the results, the effect of the live-to-dead load ratio (ρ) on the torsional response is more significant than that of the material stiffness variation. For both materials, the maximum torsion response for ρ= 0.8 resulted 66% greater than that for ρ= 0.2. For both materials and considering all earthquakes and structural models, the increase in the average peak accidental torsional response for ρ= 0.8 was approximately 20% greater than that for ρ= 0.2. These results corroborate that the accidental torsional response of buildings increases in proportion to ρ. Discrimination between concrete and steel buildings was not significant.

- Abstract
Bidimensional spectroelectrochemistry (Bidim-SEC) is an instrumental technique that provides operandoUV/vis absorption information on electrochemical processes from two different points of view, using concomitantly a parallel and a normal optical configuration. The parallel configuration provides information about chemical species present in the diffusion layer, meanwhile the normal arrangement supplies information about changes occurring both in the diffusion layer and, mainly, on the electrode surface. The choice of a suitable cell to perform Bidim-SEC experiments is critical, especially while working under a thin-layer regime. So far, most of the proposed Bidim-SEC cells rely on the use of spacers to define the thin-layer thickness, which leads to working with constant thickness values. Herein, we propose a novel Bidim-SEC cell that enables easy-to-use micrometric control of the thin-layer thickness using a piezoelectric positioner. This device can be used for the study of complex interfacial systems and also to easily measure the key parameters of an electrochemical process. As a proof of concept, the study of the roughening of a gold electrode in KCl medium is performed, identifying key steps in the passivation and nanoparticle generation on the gold surface.

- Abstract

- Abstract
AbstractBee colonies determined as Apis mellifera scutellatahaplotype A1 were administered with a food supplement of sugar syrup mixed with p-coumaric acid (CUM), to test its supposed antioxidant effects; abscisic acid (ABA), to test whether it promotes innate immunity in bees, the combination of both (ABACUM), and syrup as a control. During three months, the number of cells with brood, honey and pollen reserves, as well as the concentration of hemocytes in worker bees were counted. Besides, Varroa destructorand Nosema ceranaewere monitored. At the concentrations used, ABA and CUM had no effect on oviposition; however, there was a significant increase in the number of cells with brood or with honey and pollen reserves between the beginning and the end of the study. Regarding the monitoring of V. destructor, there were no significant differences between treatments; this mite did not cause obvious damage, seemingly because the experimental (Africanized) bees are considered tolerant to its infestation. There were no significant differences between treatments in infection by N. ceranae; however, there was a significant decrease in intensity, prevalence, and abundance of spores between the beginning and the end of the study, which was associated with the fact that the bees collected nectar and this resulted in the development of colonies. The number of hemocytes did not show a significant difference between treatments, but there was a significant increase between the first and the last evaluation. Neither ABA, CUM or ABACUM produced the predicted effects on the experimental bees.

- Abstract
WASP-107b is a warm (approximately 740 K) transiting planet with a Neptune-like mass of roughly 30.5 M⊕and Jupiter-like radius of about 0.94 RJ(refs. 1,2), whose extended atmosphere is eroding3. Previous observations showed evidence for water vapour and a thick, high-altitude condensate layer in the atmosphere of WASP-107b (refs. 4,5). Recently, photochemically produced sulfur dioxide (SO2) was detected in the atmosphere of a hot (about 1,200 K) Saturn-mass planet from transmission spectroscopy near 4.05 μm (refs. 6,7), but for temperatures below about 1,000 K, sulfur is predicted to preferably form sulfur allotropes instead of SO2(refs. 8–10). Here we report the 9σdetection of two fundamental vibration bands of SO2, at 7.35 μm and 8.69 μm, in the transmission spectrum of WASP-107b using the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of JWST. This discovery establishes WASP-107b as the second irradiated exoplanet with confirmed photochemistry, extending the temperature range of exoplanets exhibiting detected photochemistry from about 1,200 K down to about 740 K. Furthermore, our spectral analysis reveals the presence of silicate clouds, which are strongly favoured (around 7σ) over simpler cloud set-ups. Furthermore, water is detected (around 12σ) but methane is not. These findings provide evidence of disequilibrium chemistry and indicate a dynamically active atmosphere with a super-solar metallicity.

- Abstract
Quinoa waste is often overlooked due to the limited scientific understanding of its potential applications. However, the carbohydrates it contains can be hydrolyzed and utilized in biotechnological processes to produce valuable products, such as pullulan, an exopolysaccharide used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. This approach can also help mitigate pollution from waste incineration. To effectively extract sugars from quinoa stalks, pretreatment is essential to modify their structural properties. In this context, citric acid–assisted hydrothermal pretreatment (CA-HTP) was evaluated to enhance the enzymatic digestibility of the carbohydrates, allowing for the subsequent production of pullulan from the extracted sugars. A central composite design (CCD) was employed to assess the impact of pretreatment time (20 to 60 min) and citric acid loading (3 to 12% w/w) at 180 °C. Under the optimized condition of CA-HTP (37.12 min, 9.43% w/w CA loading), 59 g of glucose per 100 g of pretreated biomass (94% hydrolysis yield) was achieved after 24 h of enzymatic process. Low CA loading during HTP produced 6.8 g of xylose per 100 g of biomass and 10 mg/g of XOS (xylobiose + xylotriose). Finally, using the enzymatic hydrolysate, 8.9 g/L of pullulan (yield 0.51 g/g) was achieved. CA-HTP enhances biomass susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis, releasing a high concentration of fermentable sugars and prebiotics. This process could be applied in the valorization of other organic residues, contributing to the development of a circular bioeconomy.

- Abstract
The integrated stress response (ISR) regulates cell fate during conditions of stress by leveraging the cell’s capacity to endure sustainable and efficient adaptive stress responses. Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) activity modulation has been shown to be successful in achieving both therapeutic efficacy and safety across various cancer models. However, the molecular mechanisms driving its selective antitumor effects remain unclear. Here, we show for the first time that ISR plasticity relies on PP2A activation to regulate drug response and dictate cellular survival under conditions of chronic stress. We demonstrate that genetic and chemical modulation of the PP2A leads to chronic proteolytic stress and triggers an ISR to dictate whether the cell lives or dies. More specifically, we uncovered that the PP2A-TFE3-ATF4 pathway governs ISR cell plasticity during endoplasmic reticular and cellular stress independent of the unfolded protein response. We further show that normal cells reprogram their genetic signatures to undergo ISR-mediated adaptation and homeostatic recovery thereby avoiding toxicity following PP2A-mediated stress. Conversely, oncogenic specific cytotoxicity induced by chemical modulation of PP2A is achieved by activating chronic and irreversible ISR in cancer cells. Our findings propose that a differential response to chemical modulation of PP2A is determined by intrinsic ISR plasticity, providing a novel biological vulnerability to selectively induce cancer cell death and improve targeted therapeutic efficacy.

- Abstract
Inorganic and methylated thioarsenates have recently been reported to form in paddy soil pore waters and accumulate in rice grains. Among them, dimethylmonothioarsenate (DMMTA) is particularly relevant because of its high cytotoxicity and potential misidentification as nonregulated dimethylarsenate (DMA). Studying DMMTA uptake and flag leaf, grain, and husk accumulation in rice plants during grain filling, substantial dethiolation to DMA was observed with only 8.0 ± 0.1, 9.1 ± 0.6, and 1.4 ± 0.2% DMMTA remaining, respectively. More surprisingly, similar shares of DMMTA were observed in control experiments with DMA, indicating in plantaDMA thiolation. Exposure of different rice seedling varieties to not only DMA but also to arsenite and monomethylarsenate (MMA) revealed in plantathiolation as a common process in rice. Up to 35 ± 7% DMA thiolation was further observed in the shoots and roots of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Parameters determining the ratio and kinetics of thiolation versus dethiolation are unknown, yet, but less DMA thiolation in glutathione-deficient mutants compared to wild-type plants suggested glutathione concentration as one potential parameter. Our results demonstrate that pore water is not the only source for thioarsenates in rice grains and that especially the currently nonregulated DMA needs to be monitored as a potential precursor of DMMTA formation inside rice plants.

- Abstract
Photophoretic Au@MoS2micromotors are used as smart mobile substrates for dynamic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing. The photophoretic capabilities and swarming-like propulsion of the micromotors allow for their schooling and accumulation in the measuring spot, increasing the density of SERS-active gold nanoparticles for Raman mapping and, simultaneously, the preconcentration of the target analyte. The generation of “hot-microflake spots” directly in the Raman irradiation point results in a 15–18-fold enhancement in the detection of crystal violet without the requirement for additional external sources for propulsion. Moreover, the reproducible collective micromotor motion does not depend on the exact position of the laser spot concerning individual micromotors, which greatly simplifies the experimental setup, avoiding the requirements of sophisticated equipment. The strategy was further applied for the detection of malachite green and paraquat with a good signal enhancement. The new on-the-move-based SERS strategy holds great promise for on-site detection with portable instrumentation in a myriad of environmental monitoring and clinical applications.

- Abstract
Raman signal enhancement is fundamental to develop different analytical tools for chemical analysis, interface reaction studies, or new materials characterization, among others. Thus, phenomena such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have been used for decades to increase the sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy, leading to a huge development of this field. Recently, an alternative method to SERS for the amplification of Raman signals has been reported. This method, known as electrochemical surface oxidation-enhanced Raman scattering (EC-SOERS), has been experimentally described. However, to date, it has not yet been fully understood. In this work, new experimental data that clarify the origin of the Raman enhancement in SOERS are provided. The use of a complete and unique set of combined spectroelectrochemistry techniques, including time-resolved operandoUV–vis absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectroelectrochemistry, reveals that such enhancement is related to the generation of dielectric or semiconductor nanocrystals on the surface of the electrode and that the interaction between the target molecule and the dielectric substrate is mediated by metal cations. According to these results, the interaction metal electrode–nanocrystal–metal cation–molecule is proposed as being responsible for the Raman enhancement in Ag and Cu substrates. Elucidation of the origin of the Raman enhancement will help to promote the rational design of SOERS substrates as an attractive alternative to the well-known SERS phenomenon.

- Abstract
The formation of stars and planets is accompanied not only by the build-up of matter, namely accretion, but also by its expulsion in the form of highly supersonic jets that can stretch for several parsecs1,2. As accretion and jet activity are correlated and because young stars acquire most of their mass rapidly early on, the most powerful jets are associated with the youngest protostars3. This period, however, coincides with the time when the protostar and its surroundings are hidden behind many magnitudes of visual extinction. Millimetre interferometers can probe this stage but only for the coolest components3. No information is provided on the hottest (greater than 1,000 K) constituents of the jet, that is, the atomic, ionized and high-temperature molecular gases that are thought to make up the jet’s backbone. Detecting such a spine relies on observing in the infrared that can penetrate through the shroud of dust. Here we report near-infrared observations of Herbig-Haro 211 from the James Webb Space Telescope, an outflow from an analogue of our Sun when it was, at most, a few times 104years old. These observations reveal copious emission from hot molecules, explaining the origin of the ‘green fuzzies’4–7discovered nearly two decades ago by the Spitzer Space Telescope8. This outflow is found to be propagating slowly in comparison to its more evolved counterparts and, surprisingly, almost no trace of atomic or ionized emission is seen, suggesting its spine is almost purely molecular.

In this study the influence of the utilization of ceramic recycled aggregates in the properties of masonry mortars is analyzed. The mortars were made with an initial relation cement-sand of 1: 6. The recycled aggregate used was added to the mixture in percentages of replacement of 20%, 35%, 50%, 70% and 100% of natural aggregate. The substitutions were made in volume. All manufactured specimens were cured for 28 days under standard conditions. Once the curing period was completed the physical and mechanical properties were analyzed. After analyzing the results obtained in the tests a reduction in the density is observed as the percentage of substitution increases. Also, its behavior to flexion improves, the compressive strength is increased and the coefficient of water absorption is reduced. The shrinkage can be considered acceptable up to percentages of replacement of 50%. Keywords: Ceramic recycled agreggates Masonry mortars Flexural strength Compressive strength Shrinkage, 1. - Abstract
A major obstacle for machine learning (ML) in chemical science is the lack of physically informed feature representations that provide both accurate prediction and easy interpretability of the ML model. In this work, we describe adsorption systems using novel two-dimensional energy histogram (2D-EH) features, which are obtained from the probe-adsorbent energies and energy gradients at grid points located throughout the adsorbent. The 2D-EH features encode both energetic and structural information of the material and lead to highly accurate ML models (coefficient of determination R2∼ 0.94–0.99) for predicting single-component adsorption capacity in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). We consider the adsorption of spherical molecules (Kr and Xe), linear alkanes with a wide range of aspect ratios (ethane, propane, n-butane, and n-hexane), and a branched alkane (2,2-dimethylbutane) over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. The interpretable 2D-EH features enable the ML model to learn the basic physics of adsorption in pores from the training data. We show that these MOF-data-trained ML models are transferrable to different families of amorphous nanoporous materials. We also identify several adsorption systems where capillary condensation occurs, and ML predictions are more challenging. Nevertheless, our 2D-EH features still outperform structural features including those derived from persistent homology. The novel 2D-EH features may help accelerate the discovery and design of advanced nanoporous materials using ML for gas storage and separation in the future.

- Abstract
The combination of instrumental techniques allows obtaining precise and reliable information about the reactions taking place at the electrode/solution interface. Although UV–Vis absorption spectroelectrochemistry (UV–Vis SEC) provides a molecular insight about the species involved in the electrode process, obtaining information about the redox state of the products generated in this process is not always accessible by this technique. In this sense, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has a clear advantage, since it provides additional information on the oxidation state of the intermediates/products. Therefore, the combination of these two techniques facilitates obtaining a more complete picture of the electrochemical reaction studied from two different points of view, but under exactly the same experimental conditions. In this work, the combination of UV–Vis SEC in parallel configuration and SECM is carried out for the first time. This new technique allows distinguishing between those species that are electrochemically active and, at the same time, exhibit changes in the UV–Vis absorption spectra during the electrochemical reaction. The new experimental setup is first validated using ferrocenemethanol as a standard probe, concomitantly obtaining spectroscopic and electrochemical information that accurately describes the oxidation process. Finally, the strength of this combined technique is demonstrated by studying the antioxidant activity of o-vanillin (o-HVa) in the presence of electrogenerated superoxide. The information extracted from the new UV–Vis SEC/SECM technique makes it possible to identify, beyond any doubt, not only the origin of the electrochemical signals recorded in the SECM tip but also to evaluate the antioxidant effect of o-HVa at different concentrations.

- Abstract
Amorphous porous organic polymers show promise for energy-efficient adsorptive separations, but it is difficult to understand or improve their performance through intentional structural modification. Herein, we report the synthesis of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with pore structures tailored by the incorporation of a monofunctionalized end-capping monomer that disrupts framework topology. Combining experimental characterization with molecular simulations, we show that this defect engineering strategy yields less densely crosslinked networks, which leads to pore collapse and the presence of unique adsorption sites. These defect-engineered PAFs exhibit enhanced removal of 1,4-dioxane, an important environmental pollutant, from water. Increasing the concentration of end-capping monomers produces PAFs with narrower pore size distributions and improved 1,4-dioxane uptake. These results illustrate that defect engineering can effectively modulate polymer connectivity and porosity for applications in selective adsorptive separations. This technique avoids post-synthetic treatments and presents another approach to tailor amorphous polymeric adsorbents.

However, the Economic and Social Council (CES) has expressed disagreement with the procedure followed in the consultation and has pointed out that the Draft Law does not pay sufficient attention to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, the CES considers that the text is not clear enough regarding the rights of information and participation of workers. [Extracted from the article]

- Abstract
Brown dwarfs serve as ideal laboratories for studying the atmospheres of giant exoplanets on wide orbits, as the governing physical and chemical processes within them are nearly identical1,2. Understanding the formation of gas-giant planets is challenging, often involving the endeavour to link atmospheric abundance ratios, such as the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio, to formation scenarios3. However, the complexity of planet formation requires further tracers, as the unambiguous interpretation of the measured C/O ratio is fraught with complexity4. Isotope ratios, such as deuterium to hydrogen and 14N/15N, offer a promising avenue to gain further insight into this formation process, mirroring their use within the Solar System5–7. For exoplanets, only a handful of constraints on 12C/13C exist, pointing to the accretion of 13C-rich ice from beyond the CO iceline of the disks8,9. Here we report on the mid-infrared detection of the 14NH3and 15NH3isotopologues in the atmosphere of a cool brown dwarf with an effective temperature of 380 K in a spectrum taken with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of JWST. As expected, our results reveal a 14N/15N value consistent with star-like formation by gravitational collapse, demonstrating that this ratio can be accurately constrained. Because young stars and their planets should be more strongly enriched in the 15N isotope10, we expect that 15NH3will be detectable in several cold, wide-separation exoplanets.

- Abstract
Terrestrial and sub-Neptune planets are expected to form in the inner (less than 10 au) regions of protoplanetary disks1. Water plays a key role in their formation2–4, although it is yet unclear whether water molecules are formed in situ or transported from the outer disk5,6. So far Spitzer Space Telescope observations have only provided water luminosity upper limits for dust-depleted inner disks7, similar to PDS 70, the first system with direct confirmation of protoplanet presence8,9. Here we report JWST observations of PDS 70, a benchmark target to search for water in a disk hosting a large (approximately 54 au) planet-carved gap separating an inner and outer disk10,11. Our findings show water in the inner disk of PDS 70. This implies that potential terrestrial planets forming therein have access to a water reservoir. The column densities of water vapour suggest in-situ formation via a reaction sequence involving O, H2and/or OH, and survival through water self-shielding5. This is also supported by the presence of CO2emission, another molecule sensitive to ultraviolet photodissociation. Dust shielding, and replenishment of both gas and small dust from the outer disk, may also play a role in sustaining the water reservoir12. Our observations also reveal a strong variability of the mid-infrared spectral energy distribution, pointing to a change of inner disk geometry.

- Abstract
HyperCKemia is a rare condition characterized by a persistent increase in serum creatine kinase (CK) levels or some isoenzymes. Usually, there are no clinical, electromyography or histological manifestations, which involves a challenge at the time of diagnosis. The patient in question showed no characteristic signs or symptoms, apart from fatigue and post-exercise myalgia. Assessment was performed by rheumatology and endocrinology, determination of total CK and MB fraction in blood, and electromyography and protein electrophoresis were requested as part of the approach. This case report is considered as novel, interesting, and useful for clinical practice as few similar ones were found in the scientific literature. The difficult etiological diagnosis of this entity, and the algorithm used to arrive at it, are all presented. It is concluded that in those patients with hyperCKemia of unknown etiology, this diagnosis should be kept in mind, and be confirmed by performing a CK electrophoresis.

50. Dimethylated Thioarsenates: A Potentially Dangerous Blind Spot in Current Worldwide Regulatory Limits for Arsenic in Rice
- Author
-
Planer-Friedrich, Britta, Kerl, Carolin F., Colina Blanco, Andrea E., and Clemens, Stephan
- Abstract
Arsenic (As) occurrence in rice is a serious human health threat. Worldwide, regulations typically limit only carcinogenic inorganic As, but not possibly carcinogenic dimethylated oxyarsenate (DMA). However, there is emerging evidence that “DMA”, determined by routine acid-based extraction and analysis, hides a substantial share of dimethylated thioarsenates that have similar or higher cytotoxicities than arsenite. Risk assessments characterizing the in vivo toxicity of rice-derived dimethylated thioarsenates are urgently needed. In the meantime, either more sophisticated methods based on enzymatic extraction and separation of dimethylated oxy- and thioarsenates have to become mandatory or total As should be regulated.
