A recent report from the University of Perugia in Italy discusses the potential use of Cupriavidus necator, a type of Gram-Negative Bacteria, for the production of biodegradable polymers for food packaging. The researchers found that Cupriavidus necator DSM 545 is capable of intracellularly accumulating Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), a bio-polyester, under stress conditions. They identified optimal conditions for maximizing PHB production using natural media derived from lignocellulosic residues of cardoon.
