The relative merits of accuracy engraving technique and rapid prototyping technique during processing are discussed. Because the product dimensions are small and the strength of the rapid prototyping sample workpiece in vertical direction is too small to meet the engineering design requirements, the method using accuracy engraving machine to replace rapid prototyping machine to design product with large size and need to assemble like motorcycle cover is proposed. If the product size is too large, it can be split and every part is carved with the accuracy engraving machine, and then they are sticked together to finish the whole part. So the speed of new product development is accelerated, the cost of new product development is decreased, the rapid manufacturing is realized and the traditional design method using only RP machine is improved. This method has been applied to the development for a new motorcycle cover and the application method is expounded.

Improved Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) is an internationally accepted standards system. It is the foundation of the technology standards and metrology specifications. Uncertainty is one of the most important concepts in improved GPS. In the improved GPS standards system, uncertainty is used as an economic tool to enable optimum allocation of resources amongst specification, manufacturing and verification. Estimation of uncertainty in measurement according to improved GPS can improve the reliability of the measurement. A method to estimate the uncertainty in straightness measurement is proposed according to the requirements of improved GPS standard system. Based on the mini-zone method and the transparent box model, the calculation equation of uncertainty in straightness measurement is deduced. The experiment indicates that this method may assure the integrity of the verification result and improve the reliability of measurement.

The efficiency of CNC machining is greatly influenced by the tool path. A new hybrid algorithm for tool path optimization in CNC varied-shape grinding is presented in this paper. The algorithm was constructed by adding hill-climbing algorithm to nature genetic algorithm. In the new algorithm, the crossover operator and mutation operator were redesigned to enhance the local search capability and to accelerate convergence. Verification experiment demonstrated that the algorithm can reduce non-cutting movement of tool paths and improve machining efficiency significantly.

Functionally graded mold (FGM) is the trend in the development of modern mold. Based on the optimization of electroforming and arc spray forming, a functionally graded mold with the structure of Ni-NiAl-ZnAl-Zn was manufactured, and the microstructure of the mold shell was analyzed. The experiments show that the manufacturing of functionally graded mold by electroforming and arc spray forming is feasible in engineering. The research is of significant value in exploring new manufacturing technology of functionally graded mold.

Aiming at the problem of effectively recycling waste beverage containers, an automatic green recycling technique based on the optical image inspection is proposed. The basic principle and realization steps of the automatic green recycling technique are expounded. By using the optical image inspection technique and object contour recognition technique, the waste beverage containers are classified from different manufactures. The problem of waste beverage containers automatic recycling is solved, the cost of retailers is reduced and the waste beverage containers are recycled effectively. This automatic green recycling technique is significant for the recycling economy and sustainable development.
