Abstract

Mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) constitutes a major fraction of global soil carbon and is assumed less sensitive to climate than particulate organic carbon (POC) due to protection by minerals. Despite its importance for long-term carbon storage, the response of MAOC to changing climates in drylands, which cover more than 40% of the global land area, remains unexplored. Here we assess topsoil organic carbon fractions across global drylands using a standardized field survey in 326 plots from 25 countries and 6 continents. We find that soil biogeochemistry explained the majority of variation in both MAOC and POC. Both carbon fractions decreased with increases in mean annual temperature and reductions in precipitation, with MAOC responding similarly to POC. Therefore, our results suggest that ongoing climate warming and aridification may result in unforeseen carbon losses across global drylands, and that the protective role of minerals may not dampen these effects.

Abstract

Earth harbours an extraordinary plant phenotypic diversity1that is at risk from ongoing global changes2,3. However, it remains unknown how increasing aridity and livestock grazing pressure—two major drivers of global change4–6—shape the trait covariation that underlies plant phenotypic diversity1,7. Here we assessed how covariation among 20 chemical and morphological traits responds to aridity and grazing pressure within global drylands. Our analysis involved 133,769 trait measurements spanning 1,347 observations of 301 perennial plant species surveyed across 326 plots from 6 continents. Crossing an aridity threshold of approximately 0.7 (close to the transition between semi-arid and arid zones) led to an unexpected 88% increase in trait diversity. This threshold appeared in the presence of grazers, and moved toward lower aridity levels with increasing grazing pressure. Moreover, 57% of observed trait diversity occurred only in the most arid and grazed drylands, highlighting the phenotypic uniqueness of these extreme environments. Our work indicates that drylands act as a global reservoir of plant phenotypic diversity and challenge the pervasive view that harsh environmental conditions reduce plant trait diversity8–10. They also highlight that many alternative strategies may enable plants to cope with increases in environmental stress induced by climate change and land-use intensification.

Abstract

Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

11. Hydrogenated Turpentine: A Biobased Component for Jet Fuel

Abstract

The need to find sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels in aviation without requiring drastic structural changes in turbines and tanks has prompted a search for new components to blend with the standard Jet A1. Turpentine obtained by vacuum distillation of resin extracted from the common pine Pinus pinasteror as a byproduct of the paper industry is compared with hydrogenated turpentine at different levels of conversion as a component of jet blends. Properties such as density, kinematic viscosity, heating values, lubricity, flash point, pour point, crystallization onset temperature, and smoke point are reported. Turpentine shows high soot formation tendency. Hydrogenation was carried out as a method to saturate the double bonds of pinenes and to overcome this problem. The performance of four hydrogenated turpentines at different levels of turpentine–hydroturpentine conversion proves improvements in some key properties and especially reductions in the sooting tendency, concluding that partially hydrogenated turpentine can be blended up to 50% v/v with Jet A1, fulfilling the limit required by the standard specification for aviation turbine fuels containing synthesized hydrocarbons.

13. Striations and preferred eddy tracks triggered by topographic steering of the background flow in the eastern South Pacific

Abstract

In recent years, persistent quasi‐zonal jets or striations have been ubiquitously detected in the world ocean using satellite and in situ data as well as numerical models. This study aims at determining the role of mesoscale eddies in the generation and persistence of striations off Chile in the eastern South Pacific. A 50 year climatological integration of an eddy‐resolving numerical ocean model is used to assess the long‐term persistence of striations. Automated eddy tracking algorithms are applied to the model outputs and altimetry data. Results reveal that striations coincide with both polarized eddy tracks and the offshore formation of new eddies in the subtropical front and coastal transition zone, without any significant decay over time that discards random eddies as a primary driver of the striations. Localized patches of vortex stretching and relative vorticity advection, alternating meridionally near the eastern edge of the subtropical front, are associated with topographic steering of the background flow in the presence of steep topography, and with baroclinically and barotropically unstable meridional flow. These sinks and sources of vorticity are suggested to generate the banded structure further west, consistently with a β‐plume mechanism. On the other hand, zonal/meridional eddy advection of relative vorticity and the associated Reynolds stress covariance are consistent with eddy deformation over rough topography and participate to sustain the striations in the far field. Shear instability of mean striations is proposed to feedback onto the eddy field, acting to maintain the subtropical front eddy streets and thus the striations. 14. Desulfurized and Hydrogenated Crude Sulfate Turpentine (HCST): A Biofuel Derived from a Waste of the Pulp and Paper Industries

Abstract

This study investigates the potential of crude sulfate turpentine (CST), a waste product from the pulp and paper industries, as a source for the production of sustainable biofuels. Direct use of CST as a drop-in biofuel is hindered by its high sulfur content and the presence of double bonds, leading to an increased level of soot formation during combustion. To address these challenges, CST, with a sulfur content of 10563 mg/kg, was desulfurized using peroxiformic acid oxidation, followed by liquid–liquid extraction, resulting in a sulfur content reduction to approximately 2000 mg/kg with a 70% yield. Subsequently, the desulfurized CST underwent repeated passes through an active carbon column, achieving a sulfur content of close to 10 mg/kg. The desulfurized CST was then hydrogenated using a 5% Pd/C catalyst in batch mode, attaining a 92% conversion rate after 4.5 h, with a sulfur content below 10 mg/kg. The hydrogenated CST samples were analyzed for various properties and compared to those of hydrogenated pine turpentine. The hydrogenated CST with 92% conversion exhibits good characteristics to work as a sustainable fuel but falls short in terms of derived cetane number and flash point. However, it could still be blended with JetA1 and diesel up to a maximum volume fraction of 65%. These findings suggest that CST has potential as a sustainable biofuel with further improvements needed to meet specific property requirements.

15. Tritrophic web structure in montane Andean forests undergoing ecological restoration

Abstract

Parasitism represents an important ecosystem service, reducing pest abundance. Since most hosts of parasitoids are herbivores, plant diversity likely shapes both herbivore and parasitoid assemblages. While restoration efforts are being adopted worldwide, mitigating habitat degradation, little is known about how tritrophic webs are organized among plant species in recovering ecosystems. Here we collected exposed herbivores (Coleoptera and Lepidoptera larvae) during four sampling months from five plant species in two restoration areas in Andean forests in southern Ecuador. Larvae were kept in the laboratory until the emergence of the adults or parasitoids. Herbivore and parasitoid diversity and parasitism rates were compared among plants. A total of 82 immature individuals (56 Lepidoptera and 26 Coleoptera—23 predatory and 3 herbivorous) were collected and 102 parasitoids emerged (all Hymenoptera except one tachinid fly). Herbivore and parasitoid assemblages showed a high species turnover between plant species. The mean parasitism rate was 35.14% and 46.67% in the two restoration sites, respectively, with no significant differences found within forests or plants. Long-term food web monitoring should be carried out to improve our understanding of how ecosystems under ecological restoration programs functionally recover.
