This article introduces the concepts of open access (OA) publishing and provides an overview of the main OA options available including the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. The current OA landscape is described focusing on to the role of funding agencies in driving the adoption of OA. We look at OA publishing within the chemical science community and introduce how the Royal Society of Chemistry is supporting the community as the publishing industry evolves and adapts to offering a greater number of publication options, both OA and non OA to authors.
