1. Blockchain Technology as a Tool to Make Supply Chains More Resilient and Sustainable

Abstract: Supply Chain Management (SCM) is a critical part of all businesses that dictates their success and customer satisfaction. The COVID-19 pandemic and other disruptions exposed critical shortcomings in SCM, such as material and labor scarcity, high freight prices, and demand forecasting complexities. These developments have called for an urgent need to explore ways to make supply chains more resilient. Digital technologies like blockchain, QR codes, and RFID tags are recognized for enhancing transparency and traceability. The paper focuses on enhancing the resilience of supply chains, emphasizing transparency and reliability. It presents a case study of a regional Australian food processing company and evaluates a blockchain-based SCM model to address its upstream supply chain and logistics issues. A smart contract of the proposed model is validated via simulation on Remix IDE. The model promotes total quality by facilitating real-time tracking for rapid fault identification, enabling timely, cost-efficient procurement of raw materials and inventory, and reducing waste. 4. Sub-Transmission Ground Fault Overvoltage Management Under IBR Reverse Flow

Abstract: The rise of inverter-based distributed energy resources (IBRs) is reshaping global power system planning and operation. Unlike traditional rotating machines, IBRs lack physical characteristics and rely on control algorithms to support the grid during abnormal conditions. This is especially evident in mass-adopted distributed sources like rooftop residential-scale Distributed Energy Resources (DER), which are controlled to behave as constant current sources. Numerous jurisdictions already experience steady-state reverse flows at substations during periods of minimum load and maximum generation. However, the aggregation of IBRs exacerbates ground fault overvoltages (GFOV) at the transmission level, as they appear as open circuits in the zero and/or negative sequence networks. This paper analyzes the issue through electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, yielding chart-based screening guidelines. These guidelines can assist utilities in evaluating necessary retrofits for substations as more IBRs are adopted, particularly for small-scale IBRs that are interconnected with little to no rigorous analysis.

5. Using Implicit Behavior Cloning and Dynamic Movement Primitive to Facilitate Reinforcement Learning for Robot Motion Planning

Abstract: Reinforcement learning (RL) for motion planning of multi-degree-of-freedom robots still suffers from low efficiency in terms of slow training speed and poor generalizability. In this article, we propose a novel RL-based robot motion planning framework that uses implicit behavior cloning (IBC) and dynamic movement primitive (DMP) to improve the training speed and generalizability of an off-policy RL agent. IBC utilizes human demonstration data to leverage the training speed of RL, and DMP serves as a heuristic model that transfers motion planning into a simpler planning space. To support this, we also create a human demonstration dataset using a pick-and-place experiment that can be used for similar studies. Comparison studies reveal the advantage of the proposed method over the conventional RL agents with faster training speed and higher scores. A real-robot experiment indicates the applicability of the proposed method to a simple assembly task. Our work provides a novel perspective on using motion primitives and human demonstration to leverage the performance of RL for robot applications.

6. Corrosion resistance of amorphous AlPO4coating in salty atmospheres

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to introduce a cost‐effective and environmentally friendly coating to improve the corrosion resistance of the structures located in salt water. The coating solution, based on amorphous aluminum phosphate composition, was synthesized by sol–gel process and applied to AISI 304 stainless steel by dip coating technique. X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses were employed to investigate the phase composition and morphology of the coating. Corrosion behavior of the uncoated and coated samples was investigated using standard salt spray test, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Salt spray test results for the bare substrate revealed a corrosion rate of six‐time greater than that of the coated surface after 168 hr exposure time. Electrochemical test results declared that the amorphous AlPO4coating decreased the corrosion current density of the AISI 304 stainless steel by 10 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, according to the corresponding EIS measurements, the coated surface exhibited a superior anti‐corrosion performance than uncoated sample. Overall, the results declared that the amorphous AlPO4coating could be a good choice for surface protection of stainless steel against electrochemical corrosion in salty environments. This research introduced a cost‐effective and environmentally friendly coating based on aluminum phosphate composition with a pseudo‐amorphous structure to improve the corrosion resistance of offshore structures and make efficient use of marine resources. The results declared that the coating with no toxic chemicals or heavy metals was capable of surface protection of substrate against electrochemical corrosion in salty environments.

8. Color Doppler Ultrasound's Utility in Detecting Vesicoureteral Reflux Using the Ureteral Jet Angle

Abstract: This study hypothesizes using color Doppler ultrasound to measure ureteral jet angles (UJA) as a diagnostic screening tool for reflux. The present prospective cohort study included 122 patients and 238 renal unit pediatric patients suspected of VUR who presented to our hospital between 2019 and 2021. All patients underwent ultrasonography and VCUG, and the UJA was measured color Doppler evaluation of the ureteral jet. The UJA was compared with the VCUG findings in patients with and without reflux. SPSS 26 was used to analyze the data. A total of 96 patients and 139 renal units exhibited reflux. The mean ureteral jet angle in refluxing units was 60.47 + 16.66 degrees, whereas, it was 42.59 + 13.26 degrees in non‐refluxing units, a significant difference between the two groups (P< .001). The mean ureteral jet angle was 42.59, 45.89, 60.32, 68.23, and 56.16, for reflux grading from 0 to 5 (except grade 1), respectively. The angle value in each reflux grade increased significantly except for grade 5. For reflux detection (grade I–V), a cut‐off angle of 50 degrees was associated with sensitivity and specificity of 70 and 79, respectively. Grade IV/V reflux can be diagnosed with a sensitivity of 70% and specificity of 84% using a cut‐off angle of 68 degrees or greater. UJA detection via color Doppler ultrasound demonstrates high accuracy, is non‐invasive method can be utilized as an alternative primary diagnostic tool or in follow‐up cases of VUR in children.

10. Dynamic Harmonic Estimation Using a Novel Robust Filtering Strategy: Iterated Sliding Innovation Cubature Filter

Abstract: Active filters (AFs) are effective tools for mitigating the detrimental effects of harmonic components on the power systems. The performance of AFs is significantly dependent on designing an accurate and robust estimator which is responsible for providing reference harmonic values. In this article, a novel technique, called sliding innovation (SI) cubature filter, is proposed to estimate the harmonic parameters, i.e., magnitude and phase, in various operating conditions. The proposed method exploits the concept of sliding mode control in the formulation of the measurement update step in the Bayesian filtering framework to enhance the robustness of the estimator. Furthermore, the iterated version of the proposed algorithm, called iterative SI cubature filter, is presented to enhance the accuracy of the estimator. The proposed method keeps its robustness and accuracy in the noisy conditions under the fault occurrence as well as power system transients. The obtained results from both simulation and experimental setup confirm that the proposed estimator is more accurate and robust with a higher convergence speed compared to the well-known discrete Fourier transform (DFT), cubature Kalman filter (CKF), iterated extended Kalman filter (IEKF), and particle filter (PF).

11. Active learning of time-optimal motion for an industrial manipulator with variable payload

Abstract: Generating optimal motion for robotic systems remains an active field of research, despite its relatively long history. In addition to being optimal with respect to a defined cost, such a motion must respect the electro-mechanical limitations of the system to be of use in real-world applications. Furthermore, in an industrial application where offline planning is not possible due to a priori unknown targets and payloads, the available time budget for computations is often highly limited, making many optimal motion planning approaches unsuitable. This work introduces a supervised learning-based motion planner for industrial manipulators that closely retains the superior performance of an optimal motion planner while requiring a fraction of the computations at runtime. The proposed motion planner implicitly considers the dynamics of the robot and therefore satisfies not only kinematic limits but also those of the actuators. The proposed method is compared to state-of-the-art approaches and demonstrated on a real robot.

12. Evaluation of a nonlinear TMD seismic performance for multi-degree of freedom structures

Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of a recently proposed tuned mass damper (TMD) to control seismic demands of multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) structures. The TMD is composed of a mass, a viscous damper, a linear spring, and a shape memory alloy (SMA)-based nonlinear stiffness unit. The performance of the TMD is compared to that of a conventional linear TMD while both embedded on three different lumped mass shear models (6, 10, and 25 stories). The numerical analyses of the structural models are carried out subjected to broad-band excitations involving 50 far-field ground motions and a filtered Gaussian white noise. The results show that the nonlinear TMD, which benefits from gradually increasing hysteretic damping in addition to viscous damping, performs better than the linear TMD, especially for longer structural periods. However, the damper mass displacement in the nonlinear TMD is not significantly higher than that of the linear TMD. Furthermore, the height-wise distribution of structural responses obtained from various TMD tunings confirms that the different optimization objectives used for the nonlinear TMD tuning do not significantly affect its seismic performance.

Abstract: Driven by the goals of clean energy and zero carbon emissions, the power industry is undergoing significant transformations. The rapid growth of diverse distributed energy resources (DERs) at grid edge such as rooftop photovoltaics (PVs) and electric vehicles is transforming the traditional centralized power grid management to a decentralized, bottom-up, and localized control paradigm. Establishing local and distribution-level electricity markets provides an effective solution to managing large amounts of small-scale DERs. New regulations such as the recent FERC Order 2222 in the U.S. open the door to DERs in the wholesale markets. Through coordinating the local and distribution-level markets with the transmission-level wholesale market, the DERs and prosumers can trade energy and flexibility locally with each other and meanwhile provide energy, flexibility and ancillary services to the bulk power grid. During this transition, there are many new technical challenges to address, calling for innovative ideas and interdisciplinary research in this promising direction. Advanced information and communication technologies (ICT) are needed, as a key enabler, for the development and practical implementation of local and distribution electricity markets. Research into local and distribution markets is strongly interdisciplinary, involving the state of the art in power engineering, economics, and digital/information technology. A broad spectrum of contributors from universities, industry, research laboratories and policy makers is sought to develop and present solutions and technologies that will facilitate and advance practical applications and implementations of local and distribution-level electricity markets to uncover the values of DERs.

14. Resilient Multi-range Radar Detection System for Autonomous Vehicles: A New Statistical Method

Abstract: Critical issues with current detection systems are their susceptibility to adverse weather conditions and constraint on the vertical field view of the radars limiting the ability of such systems to accurately detect the height of the targets. In this paper, a novel multi-range radar (MRR) arrangement (i.e. triple: long-range, medium-range, and short-range radars) based on the sensor fusion technique is investigated that can detect objects of different sizes in a level 2 advanced driver-assistance system. To improve the accuracy of the detection system, the resilience of the MRR approach is investigated using the Monte Carlo (MC) method for the first time. By adopting MC framework, this study shows that only a handful of fine-scaled computations are required to accurately predict statistics of the radar detection failure, compared to many expensive trials. The results presented huge computational gains for such a complex problem. The MRR approach improved the detection reliability with an increased mean detection distance (4.9% over medium range and 13% over long range radar) and reduced standard deviation over existing methods (30% over medium range and 15% over long-range radar). This will help establishing a new path toward faster and cheaper development of modern vehicle detection systems.

15. Fabrication of a novel magnetic high entropy alloy with desirable mechanical properties by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering

Abstract: In this study, a novel magnetic CoCuFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) was synthesized using mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Thermodynamic analysis showed that the solid solution state of the CoCuFeMnNi alloy system has the highest negative Gibbs free energy (−59.34 kJ/mol), meaning that the solid solution state is very stable. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of an FCC solid solution after 50 h mechanical alloying. The vibrant sample magnetometer (VSM) test illustrated a soft magnetic behavior with 48 emu/g magnetic saturation (MS) and 15 Oe coercivity field (HC) in 1 T (T) applied magnetic field. The maximum of densification and microhardness were attained at 850 °C, and the ultimate values of shear strength and tensile strength were 320 MPa and 576 MPa, respectively. The CoCuFeMnNi HEA was subjected to a pin-on-disc dry sliding wear test at various temperatures from room temperature to 600 °C. A detailed microscopic characterization of the worn surfaces revealed a transition in the predominant wear mechanism from delamination wear at room temperature to oxidative and delamination wear at elevated temperatures. The formation of an oxidized tribo-layer at 600 °C on the worn surfaces led to a low wear rate and low coefficient of friction, enabling the CoCuFeMnNi HEA for high-temperature applications.

16. Evaluating machine learning models in predicting dam inflow and hydroelectric power production in multi-purpose dams (case study: Mahabad Dam, Iran)

Abstract: This study aimed to forecast dam inflows and subsequently predict its capability in producing HEPP using machine learning and evolutionary optimization techniques. Mahabad Dam, located in the northwest of Iran and recognized as one of the nation’s key dams, served as a case study. First, artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) were employed to predict dam inflows, with optimization of parameters achieved through Harris hawks optimization (HHO), a robust optimization technique. The data of temperature, precipitation, and dam inflow over a 24-year period on a monthly basis, incorporating various lag times, were used to train these machines. Then, HEPP from the dam was predicted using temperature, precipitation, dam inflow, and dam evaporation as input variables. The models were applied to data covering the years 2000 to 2020. The results of the first part indicated both hybrid models (HHO-ANFIS and HHO-SVR) improved the prediction performance compared to the single models. Based on the results of Taylor’s diagram and the error evaluation criteria, the HHO-ANFIS hybrid model (RMSE, MAE, and NSE of 3.90, 2.41, and 0.86, respectively) exerted better performance than HHO-SVR (RMSE, MAE, and NSE of 4.39, 2.70, and 0.86, respectively). The results of the second part showed that using the HHO algorithm to optimize single models (RMSE, MAE, and NSE of 0.2, 10, and 0.90, respectively) predicted HEPP better than single models (RMSE, MAE, and NSE of 0.2, 10, and 0.90, respectively). The results of Taylor’s diagram also showed that the HHO-ANFIS model exerted better performance. The findings of this study indicated the promising performance of machine learning models optimized by metaheuristic algorithms in the simultaneous prediction of dam inflows and HEPP in multi-purpose dams for better management and allocation of surface water resources.

19. Investigating the Effect of Heat Transfer Coefficient and the Heat Flux on the Thermal Performance of the PCM in the Heat Sink

Abstract: The development of small-sized electronic components requires the design of a small-sized heat sink, which limits the access to the high amount of heat transfer coefficient. In this paper, the use of phase change material is considered to overcome this issue. In this regard, a heat sink with and without the phase change material is numerically designed and the maximum temperature of the base plate is calculated and compared in two cases. The heat sink is assumed to be located on a base plate with different heat fluxes in the range of 2700–15,300 W/m2and vicinity of a wide range of convective heat transfer coefficients from 1 to 550 W/(m2·K). Comparing the results between heat sink with the phase change material and without it indicates a certain amount of heat transfer coefficient, which, for less than that, the use of the phase change material reduces the base plate temperature, and over it, the phase change material raises the base plate temperature. Also, results show that the design heat transfer coefficient has an inverse relationship with the operating time of the heat sink, so that for long operating times, the use of PCM will be justifiable in the low heat transfer coefficients.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to explore resistance markers and possible biochemical resistance mechanisms in the Phlebotomine sand fly Phlebotomus papatasiin Esfahan Province, central Iran. Homogenous resistant strains of sand flies were obtained by exposing P. papatasicollected from Esfahan to a single diagnostic dose of DDT. The adults from the colony were tested with papers impregnated with four pyrethroid insecticides: Permethrin 0.75%, Deltamethrin 0.05%, Cyfluthrin 0.15%, and Lambdacyhalothrin 0.05% to determine levels of cross-resistance. To discover the presence of mutations, a 440 base pair fragment of the voltage gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene was amplified and sequenced in both directions for the susceptible and resistant colonies. We also assayed the amount of four enzymes that play a key role in insecticide detoxification in the resistant colonies. A resistance ratio (RR) of 2.52 folds was achieved during the selection of resistant strains. Sequence analysis revealed no knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations in the VGSCgene. Enzyme activity ratio of the resistant candidate and susceptible colonies were calculated for α-esterases (3.78), β-esterases (3.72), mixed function oxidases (MFO) (3.21), and glutathione-S-transferases (GST) (1.59). No cross-resistance to the four pyrethroids insecticides was observed in the DDT resistant colony. The absence of kdrmutations in the VGSCgene suggests that alterations in esterase and MFO enzymes are responsible for the resistant of P. papatasito DDT in central Iran. This information could have significant predictive utility in managing insecticide resistant in this Leishmaniavector.

24. Stochastic Optimization Approach for Current Channel Arrangement of LED Lights Fed by AC Direct LED Drivers

Abstract: Background: Because of significant challenges in locating conventional drivers into luminaires, and also cost issues, a noticeable attitude toward AC direct LED drivers has been shaped. Nevertheless, the multiplicity of target parameters like output lumen, efficacy in lumen per watt, power consumption, PF, THD, and so on limits designers to select an optimal design of LED modules applying AC direct LED drivers. Methods: The most crucial issue in the design phase is selecting the Optimal Number of LEDs in Current Channels (ONLCC) fed by the AC direct driver. The main contribution of the paper is utilizing an optimization method based on a stochastic search to optimize the aforementioned parameters. Results: The parameters to be optimized are inserted into the predefined objective functions. Different case studies conducted in the presented work show that the proposed method finds the optimal parameters while the objective function is minimized. Such a paradigm can save time spent in the design phase. Furthermore, a stability study is conducted to explore the stochastic search capability in solving the ONLCC problem. Conclusion: The obtained results from the simulation are supported by practical tests. All the validation tests in practice are conducted in the electro-optics laboratory of the Mazinoor lighting industry.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Fine needle aspirations (FNAs) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)-guided brushings (BRUSH) are useful tools in the differentiation between malignant and benign disease of the pancreas. Once the decision to obtain a cytologic confirmation of one's clinical suspicion is made, the interpretation of the findings, especially an equivocal or negative cytology finding, can be unclear. This study seeks to evaluate the utility of cytologic studies in the evaluation of a patient with suspected pancreatic malignancy. METHODS: A retrospective review of 224 cytologic reports, including 174 FNAs and 50 BRUSHs, from all pancreatic FNAs and BRUSHs performed between January 1989 and June 1995, was performed. Subsequent confirmation of the cytologic diagnosis was made either by histologic or strict clinical criteria. RESULTS: Forty-three percent of the cytologic reports were read as malignant, all others reported as suspicious, atypical, or negative. All cytology studies read as malignant and all FNAs reported as suspicious were histologically or clinically confirmed to be malignant. Of those reported as atypical or negative, 55% and 49% were confirmed to be malignant. Both FNA and BRUSH were 100% specific, 75% sensitive, and 80% accurate. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that a cytological diagnosis of malignant or suspicious is reliable and useful for further therapy planning in the patient suspected to have a pancreatic malignancy. The reason for the cytologic tests was a strong clinical suspicion, therefore, a high incidence of cancer was found in the patients with atypical or negative readings. A diagnosis of atypical or negative is equivocal and requires further diagnostic maneuvers, frequently including surgery, to make the definitive diagnosis. Am J Surg. 1996;171 :525528.

28. Microstructural and mechanical properties assessment of transient liquid phase bonding of CoCuFeMnNi high entropy alloy

Abstract: The transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of CoCuFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) was studied. The TLP bonding was performed using AWS BNi-2 interlayer at 1050 °C with the TLP bonding time of 20, 60, 180 and 240 min. The effect of bonding time on the joint microstructure was characterized by SEM and EDS. Microstructural results confirmed that complete isothermal solidification occurred approximately at 240 min of bonding time. For samples bonded at 20, 60 and 180 min, athermal solidification zone was formed in the bonding area which included Cr-rich boride and Mn3Si intermetallic compound. For all samples, the γsolid solution was formed in the isothermal solidification zone of the bonding zone. To evaluate the effect of TLP bonding time on mechanical properties of joints, the shear strength and micro-hardness of joints were measured. The results indicated a decrement of micro-hardness in the bonding zone and an increment of micro-hardness in the adjacent zone of joints. The minimum and maximum values of shear strength were 100 and 180 MPa for joints with the bonding time of 20 and 240 min, respectively.

Abstract: Background: There has been a rapid increase in the prevalence of psychiatric and psychological disease, and this has attracted interest in identifying modifiable lifestyle factors that may affect an individual’s mood. Diet is one potential lifestyle factor that may affect psychological function.Aim: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between adherence to the health-promoting Nordic diet (ND) with neuropsychological function in young women.Methods: The study comprised 181 female students aged between 18 and 25 years. Psychological function was evaluated using a series of standardized questionnaires, including the Cognitive Ability Questionnaire, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Epworth Sleep Scale and Quality of Life Questionnaire. A validated food frequency questionnaire, which included 65 types of foods, was used to evaluate the amount of different foods consumed.Results: Evaluation of the dietary composition of the participants showed that the rate of adherence to the ND was positively associated with total energy, carbohydrates, protein, fibre, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, folate, phosphorus, vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamins B6 and B12, carotene, whole grain, legumes, cabbage/vegetables, vegetables and fruit (p<0.05). Linear regression showed cabbage/vegetable consumption was inversely related to scores of stress (β=–0.04; p=0.038) and anxiety (β=–0.02; p=0.049) and directly associated with the quality-of-life score (0.02; p=0.036).Conclusions: Adherence to a ND with a high intake of cabbage/vegetables was inversely associated with stress and anxiety scores and directly associated with health-related quality of life.

32. Gas Flow Models of Shale: A Review

Abstract: Conventional flow models based on Darcy’s flow physics fail to model shale gas production data accurately. The failure to match field data and laboratory-scale evidence of non-Darcy flow has led researchers to propose various gas-flow models for the shale reservoirs. There is extensive evidence that suggests the size of the pores in shale is microscopic in the range of a few to hundreds of nanometers (also known as nanopores). These small pores are mostly associated with the shale’s organic matter portion, resulting in a dual pore system that adds to the gas flow complexity. Unlike Darcy’s law, which assumes that a dominant viscous flux determines a rock’s permeability, shale’s permeability leads to other flow processes besides viscous flow such as gas slippage and Knudsen diffusion. This work reviews the dominant gas-flow processes in a single nanopore on the basis of theoretical models and molecular dynamics simulations, and lattice Boltzmann modeling. We extend the review to pore network models used to study the gas permeability of shale.

33. Anti-atherosclerotic Effects of Spice-Derived Phytochemicals

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. Atherosclerosis is characterized by oxidized lipid deposition and inflammation in the arterial wall and represents a significant problem in public health and medicine. Some dietary spices have been widely used in many countries; however, the mechanism of their action as it relates to the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis is still poorly understood. In this review, we focus on the properties of various spice-derived active ingredients used in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, as well as associated atherosclerotic risk factors. We provide a summary of the mechanisms of action, epidemiological analyses, and studies of various components of spice used in the clinic, animal models, and cell lines related to atherosclerosis. Most notably, we focused on mechanisms of action by which these spice-derived compounds elicit their lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, as well as their involvement in selected biochemical and signal transduction pathways. It is suggested that future research should aim to design well-controlled clinical trials and more thoroughly investigate the role of spices and their active components in the prevention/treatment of atherosclerosis. Based on this literature review, it appears that spices and their active components are well tolerated and have few adverse side effects and, therefore, provide a promising adjunctive treatment strategy for patients with atherosclerosis.

34. Digital Rock Techniques to Study Shale Permeability: A Mini-Review

Abstract: Because of recent advances in digital imaging techniques, the use of these techniques has become popular in unconventional reservoirs. Current images can disclose information at very high resolutions. This trait is especially applicable to shales, which contain multiscale pore space ranging from nano- to macroscale. Various computational methods have been developed to take advantage of these information-rich images and provide results equivalent to those observed in experimental tests. However, as in traditional rock physics and geomaterials problems in general, there is the issue of uncertainties in mineralogy and pore space. Various images must be produced to minimize these uncertainties, which is costly and time-consuming. The resolution of the available images has also posed issues of lost accuracy, and the limitations of two-dimensional space make the use of such images challenging for conducting realistic computational modeling. The issues and opportunities surrounding digital imaging techniques have resulted in the development of several computational methods for accurately characterizing shale samples, evaluating physical properties, and quantifying uncertainties. These reconstruction methods all aim at accurately predicting permeability. Once these realizations developed, the flow of single-phase gas, single-phase liquid, or two-phase fluid can be modeled to study gas permeability, liquid permeability, or relative permeability, respectively. In this paper, we review recent progress in these methods as well as guidelines for future research.

The current article presents a case study to describe how monitoring ballistocardiogram (BCG) waveforms captured non-invasively using sensors placed under a bed mattress can detect early heart failure changes. Heart and respiratory rates obtained from the bed sensor of a female older adult who was hospitalized with acute mixed congestive heart failure, clinic notes, and data from computer simulations reflecting increasing diastolic dysfunction were analyzed. Mean heart and respiratory rate trends obtained from her bed sensor in the prior 2 months did not indicate heart failure. BCG waveforms resulting from the simulations demonstrated changes associated with decreasing cardiac output as diastolic function worsened. Developing new methods for clinically interpreting BCG waveforms presents a significant opportunity for improving early heart failure detection. 36. Synthesis of Cross-Linked Spherical Polycationic Adsorbents for Enhanced Heparin Recovery

Abstract: Heparin, as an anticoagulant drug, is almost entirely produced via isolation from mucosal tissues of different animals; therefore, it is it is crucial to maximize its recovery. Adsorption of heparin from this complex biological mixture needs a specialized and highly effective adsorbent that almost separates only heparin from the mixture. In this work, a series of spherical cross-linked polymer bead adsorbents were synthesized via inverse suspension polymerization of water soluble monomers in corn oil, a benign solvent, and their performance for heparin adsorption from a biological sample of porcine mucosa was evaluated. To tune the performance and swelling of the resins, we varied the molar ratio of the monomer(s) to the cross-linker as well as the molar ratio of the monomers. The results of heparin recovery from biological porcine mucosa show that our optimized resin can outperform the commercially available resin in terms of adsorption efficiency of up to 18%. The adsorbed heparin was eluted, isolated, and its anticoagulant potency measured using the standard sheep plasma clotting assay. The isolated heparin samples were also analyzed by 1H NMR spectroscopy to check the possible impurities, and the results show the presence of chondroitin sulfate and dermatan sulfate, as is the case for the heparin eluted from the commercial resin. Furthermore, the effects of some experimental variables including the adsorbent dosage, pH, time, and recycling on heparin adsorption were studied, and the results show that these resins can be used for efficient recovery of heparin.

37. Variable-Impedance and Force Control for Robust Learning of Contact-rich Manipulation Tasks from User Demonstration

Abstract: This paper proposes a Cartesian variable-impedance and force controller that enables manipulators to track position and force references demonstrated by a user through kinesthetic teaching. The proposed approach deploys the variability of user demonstrations to adapt the compliance profile of the manipulator to uncertainties and utilizes interaction force measurements during task reproduction to enhance force tracking performance. A passivity analysis is provided to demonstrate the stability of the system and a simulation exemplifies how passivity is achieved in the presence of variable impedance and force feedback. Furthermore, using a 7-DOF manipulator equipped with a force sensor, two experiments were conducted to highlight the ability of the proposed approach in successfully reproducing tasks with disturbances, where the state-of-the-art methods fall short.

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) primarily includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is a cytokine produced by intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) with immunomodulatory properties that plays an important role in the development of regulatory T cell (Treg) responses and tolerance in the gut. On the other hand, IL-33 has been considered as a cytokine with two different properties, inflammatory and anti-inflammatory functions, the latter may play a protective role against chronic intestinal inflammation. In the present study, we investigated the relative gene expression levels of TSLP and IL-33 molecules in ulcerative colitis. Patients with clinical symptoms of colitis undergoing a routine diagnostic colonoscopy were included in this study. Biopsy specimens were collected and divided into two parts. One part was fixed and processed for routine histopathological examinations and the other part was stored for RNA extraction. TSLP and IL-33 gene expression were determined using the SYBR Green qRT-PCR. The expression level of TSLP and IL-33 were significantly lower in UC patients compared with the control group. Moreover, the expressions of these cytokines were more down-regulated in severe UC patients compared with mild and moderate ones and the control group. We also showed a positive correlation between low expression of TSLP and IL-33 and the severity of UC disease. In this study, we showed decreased mRNA expression levels of TSLP and IL-33 in UC patients and also a negative correlation between expression of TSLP and IL-33 and severity of UC disease.

Abstract: National levels of personal health-care access and quality can be approximated by measuring mortality rates from causes that should not be fatal in the presence of effective medical care (ie, amenable mortality). Previous analyses of mortality amenable to health care only focused on high-income countries and faced several methodological challenges. In the present analysis, we use the highly standardised cause of death and risk factor estimates generated through the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) to improve and expand the quantification of personal health-care access and quality for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2015.

40. Vitrimerization as a bridge of chemical and mechanical recycling

Abstract: Polymeric materials are the largest mass-produced synthetic consumer products in the world, which are the materials of choice for incredibly diverse applications including packaging, transportation, construction, biomedical devices, and energy storage. However, this came with the cost of environmental pollution by polymeric wastes due to their long decomposition lifetime. Different procedures have been proposed to combat this challenge. One of the most economical and efficient options is the recycling of polymer wastes for their reuse. In general, both mechanical and chemical methods have been used for recycling. Each method possesses its own advantages and disadvantages. In recent years, researchers have developed a more effective and practical solution to be utilized in a wide range of polymer materials following a “design to recycle” concept using dynamic chemical bonds. Vitrimerization is a promising concept which enables recyclability of thermosets and offers reprocessability yet properties stability of thermoplastics through scalable processes. By introducing dynamics bonds, vitrimerization allows for thermoset wastes processing with commercial thermoplastic processing machinery as well as improving the properties of thermoplastics. Vitrimerization is known as a bridge between mechanical and chemical recycling methods which creates better recycling, reuse, and (re)processability and possibly less need for sorting of post-consumer polymer products. In this review, recycling methods with focus on vitrimerization strategies to design sustainable polymeric materials toward a circular economy are discussed.

41. A Meta-Analysis of the Prevalence of Class 1 Integron and Correlation with Antibiotic Resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosaRecovered from Iranian Burn Patients

Abstract: The role of integrons has been highlighted in antibiotic resistance among Pseudomonas aeruginosaisolates. Therefore, we here reviewed the prevalence of class 1 integrons and their correlations with antibiotic resistance of P. aeruginosaisolated from Iranian burn patients. This review was conducted according to the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Cross-sectional and cohort studies published from January 1, 2000 until December 31, 2018 were enrolled. Meta-analysis was performed by Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software using the random effects model, Cochran’s Q, and I2tests. Publication bias was estimated by Funnel plot and Egger’s linear regression test. Nine out of 819 studies met the eligibility criteria. The overall combined prevalence of class 1 integrons in P. aeruginosaisolates was 69% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 50.5–83%). The highest combined resistance was reported against Cloxacillin (87.7%), followed by Carbenicillin (79.1%) and Ceftriaxone (77.3%).The combined prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates was 79.3% (95% CI: 31.1–97%). Also, a significant correlation was noted between the presence of class 1 integrons and antibiotic resistance in 55.5% of the included studies (P< .05). The results showed high prevalence of class 1 integrons, antibiotic resistance, and MDR strains in P. aeruginosaisolated from Iranian burn patients. Also, most of the included studies showed a significant correlation between the presence of class 1 integrons and antibiotic resistance.

42. On structure and oxidation behaviour of non-stoichiometric amorphous aluminium phosphate coating

Abstract: ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to investigate the structure and oxidation behaviour of non-stoichiometric aluminium phosphate coating. Phase composition analysis was performed by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used for molecular spectroscopy. The micro-structural studies were investigated by TEM. AISI 304 stainless steel substrates were dip coated in the aluminium phosphate solution to evaluate the cyclic oxidation behaviour. The oxidised samples were characterised by SEM/EDS and XRD techniques. The XRD patterns and TEM images confirmed the amorphous structure of as-synthesised aluminium phosphate. Based on the FTIR result, the non-stoichiometric amorphous aluminium phosphate owned Al−O−Al bonding besides Al−O−P. Weight change measurements after 100 h oxidation at 1100°C revealed that the range of the weight gain of the bare substrate was 30 times higher than that of the coated one.

43. Evaluating the benefits of a rapid access chest pain clinic in Australia

Abstract: To compare the outcomes and safety of a rapid access chest pain clinic (RACPC) in Australia with those of a general cardiology clinic. Prospective comparison of the outcomes for patients attending an RACPCand those of historical controls. Royal Hobart Hospital cardiology outpatient department. 1914 patients referred for outpatient evaluation of new onset chest pain (1479 patients seen in the RACPC, 435 patients previously seen in the general cardiology clinic). Service outcomes (review times, number of clinic reviews); adverse events (unplanned emergency department re‐attendances at 30 days and 12 months; major adverse cardiovascular events at 12 months, including unplanned revascularisation, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, cardiac death). Median time to review was shorter for RACPCthan for usual care patients (12 days [IQR, 8–15 days] v45 days [IQR, 27–89 days]). All patients seen in the RACPCreceived a diagnosis at the first clinic visit, but only 139 patients in the usual care group (32.0%). There were fewer unplanned emergency department re‐attendances for patients in the RACPCgroup at 30 days (1.6% v4.4%) and 12 months (5.7% v12.9%) than in the control group. Major adverse cardiovascular events were less frequent among patients evaluated in the RACPC(0.2% v1.4%). Patients were evaluated more efficiently in the RACPCthan in a traditional cardiology clinic, and their subsequent rates of emergency department re‐attendances and adverse cardiovascular events were lower.

44. Impact of Participation in School-to-Work Programs on Postsecondary Outcomes for Youth With Disabilities From Low-Income Families

Abstract: Individuals with disabilities who also live in poverty face a double jeopardy. Disability and poverty are each separately associated with poorer education and employment outcomes. One approach to ameliorate these poorer outcomes is to improve the transition from high school to adulthood. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, this article examines the role of school-to-work training programs on adult outcomes for individuals with disabilities who live in welfare receiving households. A linear probability model identifies the differences in outcomes for youth by disability and welfare status. Participation in school-to-work programs for youth with disabilities from welfare receiving homes was found to predict higher rates of employment, lower rates of conviction, and lower wages. Implications of these results and recommendations for future research design are included.

45. Non-isothermal nano-crystallization kinetics in amorphous Ni55Nb35Si10alloy

Abstract: The non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of Ni55Nb35Si10amorphous alloy, prepared by mechanical alloying, was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The amorphous alloy showed one-stage crystallization on heating, which led to the formation of nano-intermetallic crystals in amorphous matrix. The apparent activation energy for the crystallization of the alloy, determined by the Kissinger equation, was relatively high (468 kJ/mol), indicating that this amorphous alloy has high thermal stability. Changes in the activation energy during the crystallization process, were also evaluated by iso-conversional methods. The results showed that it decreases slowly from the beginning to crystallized fraction α=0.35 and it remains almost constant to the end of the process. The nano-crystallization mechanism for the non-isothermal crystallization of the amorphous alloy was explained by determining Avrami exponents. Transmission electron microscopy studies revealed the microstructural modification of amorphous alloy via nano-crystallization during annealing. The results suggest that the nucleation rate decreases with increasing time and the crystallization mechanism is governed dominantly by a three-dimensional diffusion-controlled growth. A predictive equation was obtained based on the Sestak−Berggren autocatalytic model to describe quantitatively the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics.

Abstract: How long one lives, how many years of life are spent in good and poor health, and how the population's state of health and leading causes of disability change over time all have implications for policy, planning, and provision of services. We comparatively assessed the patterns and trends of healthy life expectancy (HALE), which quantifies the number of years of life expected to be lived in good health, and the complementary measure of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), a composite measure of disease burden capturing both premature mortality and prevalence and severity of ill health, for 359 diseases and injuries for 195 countries and territories over the past 28 years.

Abstract: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of “leaving no one behind”, it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and estimated the health-related SDG index for 195 countries and territories for the period 1990–2017, projected indicators to 2030, and analysed global attainment.
