Debido a la gran problemática mundial de la resistencia bacteriana a los antibióticos, es necesaria la búsqueda continua de nuevas moléculas con características antimicrobianas. Este estudio evaluó el efecto antibacteriano y antifúngico de un extracto hexánico proveniente de la raíz de Salvia apiana.Los extractos de salvia a las concentraciones de 27; 13,5; 6,8 y 3,4mg/ml causaron inhibición del crecimiento de Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecalisy Candida albicans.Sin embargo, no presentaron efecto significativo sobre Escherichia coliy Candida tropicalisal compararse con los valores del vehículo en las valoraciones de difusión en pozo. Se demostró que S. apianatiene un efecto antimicrobiano significativo sobre patógenos de gran importancia clínica, lo que abre el campo para continuar evaluando a esta lamiácea en vistas a su posible empleo en el futuro como un agente terapéutico.

This study aimed to identify the molecular mechanism of curcumin on periodontitis based on a pharmacological network strategy. Methods: The potential therapeutic targets of curcumin and differentially expressed genes in periodontitis were identified. Subsequently, we extracted the molecules in common and analyzed them. A metabolic pathway enrichment and gene ontology analysis were performed and the protein-protein interaction network was inferred. These analyses allowed the identification of key proteins. Finally, a molecular docking of the main key proteins was performed with curcumin. Results:Our results showed that 55 genes are differentially expressed in periodontitis and are potential targets of curcumin. In addition, we observed that these genes participate in cell motility and immune response and are related to chemokine receptors (CXCRs) and enzymatic activity, such as arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX5). We identified six key proteins, IL1B, CXCL8, CD44, MMP2, EGFR, and ITGAM; molecular docking revealed that these six proteins spontaneously bind to curcumin. Conclusion:The results of this study helps us understand the molecular mechanism of curcumin in periodontitis. We propose that curcumin affects proinflammatory cytokines, ALOX5, and cell migration through chemokine receptors and acts on the cell membrane. Additionally, we identified six key proteins that are essential in this mechanism, all of which spontaneously bind to curcumin.

This study was designed to evaluate the antinociceptive interaction of the tramadol–meloxicam combination in different proportions (tramadol + meloxicam in 1:1, 1:3, and 3:1 ratios), as well as the role of nitric oxide, opioidergic, and serotonergic pathways in the antinociceptive effect of the combination. The effects of individual drugs and fixed‐ratio combinations were assayed using the 3% formalin test in mice. Isobolographic analysis was employed to characterize the synergism produced by the combinations. Tramadol (3.16–10 mg/kg, i.m.), meloxicam (3.16–17.8 mg/kg, i.m.), and tramadol–meloxicam combinations produced a dose‐dependent antinociceptive effect. ED30values were estimated for the individual drugs, and isobolograms were constructed. The tramadol + meloxicam 1:1 and 1:3 ratio combinations showed synergistic interactions while the 3:1 ratio produced additive effects. Naloxone (1 mg/kg, i.m.) or methiothepin (0.1 mg/kg, i.m.), but not L‐NAME (3 mg/kg, i.m.), prevented the antinociceptive effects of the combination. These data suggest that (1) the tramadol–meloxicam combination produces a functional synergistic interaction that involves both opioid and serotonin receptors, and (2) this combination may be a promising tool in pain management. Background: Chemotherapeutic study of cervical squamous cell carcinoma has shown some positive results. Com–plete plus partial (overall) response rates of 15% -35% (complete response rate, < 5% ) were achieved with the use of a small number of cytotoxic single agents in patients with advanced disease. In addition, overall response rates of 60% -70% (complete response rates, 10% -20% ) were achieved with cisplatin-based, multiagent regimens in patients with primary, locally ad–vanced disease. However, the lack of clear evidence that existing chemo–therapy can achieve a survival benefit, coupled with the worldwide annual deaths of hundreds of thousands of women from cervical cancer, indicates the urgent need for effective systemic therapy for this disease. Purpose: In view of the preclinical and clinical evidence that supports testing of the novel combination of 13-cis-retinoic acid (13-cRA) plus interferon-α (IFN-α) in cervical squamous cell carcinoma, we conducted a phase II study of this regimen in locally advanced disease. Methods: Twenty-six patients with un–treated, locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix were treated daily for at least 2 months with oral 13-cRA (1 mg/ kg) and subcutaneous recombinant human IFN α -2a (6 mil–lion units). In 21 patients (81% ), the disease was stage II or higher. Results: Thirteen patients (50% ) experienced major responses (tumor regression ≥ 50% ) in association with resolution of symptoms; one achieved complete response, and 12 experienced partial response. Seven with partial response are improving further, four are being maintained in partial response, and one responder has relapsed during therapy. The response rate is 58% (11 of 19) in patients with stage IIB or higher disease and 66% (10 of 15) in patients with bulky disease (at least one dimension ≥ 10 cm). Of the 13 non-responders, nine have stable disease and four have had disease progression during therapy. Toxicity was minimal. Conclusion: These preliminary results indicate that systemic 13-cRA plus IFN α -2a is a highly active, well-tolerated therapy for locally advanced cervical cancer. The primary objective of this report is to provide medical oncologists and infectious disease specialists with pertinent information on the diagnosis and management of various infectious and especially tropical diseases as they affect cancer and other immunocompromised patients in the largest general hospital in Mexico. Limited, but hopefully stimulating, data are presented here that should permit better understanding of the magnitude and geographic peculiarities that these illnesses have in a segment of the population that includes primarily the poorest and the sickest.
