We previously demonstrated that the translocation of phospholipids between the mitochondrion and the endoplasmic reticulum occurs via highly specialized membrane microdomains of both organelles that are in situclosely associated. As understanding of the interactions between both organelles requires characterization of the translocation sites organization, we first analysed the amino acid compositions of these sites. Using principal component analysis, we have shown that the translocation sites exhibit characteristic patterns when compared with the membranes from which they are derived. The results are discussed in terms of both functional and structural microcompartmentation within the membranes of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum.

Flow radioactivity counters coupled to liquid chromatography devices cause a systematic bias to the separation by broadening peaks within the radiochromatogram. Such signal smearing may be evaluated on standardization runs with a single peak, using the ratio between Fourier transforms of whole chromatographic data for the measured radioactivity time series (radioactivity channel) and for the concentration time series (optical density channel). This ratio constitutes a kernel suitable to perform the deconvolution of any radiochromatogram performed under similar conditions. Through deconvolution, the signal smearing is removed, reverting to peaks with the same geometry as in the concentration chromatogram: same retention time, peak width, and shape. The deconvolution method in processing radiochromatograms allows an easier interpretation and gives more reliable radioactivity quantification (improved linearity of the measured response). Fourier transformation of the radiochromatogram also allows the removal of transitory events (noise) through the correlation procedure. A peculiar fatty acid previously detected in the phospholipids of the pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum, is identified as (Z,Z)-9,12,17-octadecatrienoic acid. It is the first report of this compound in the literature. Comparison of fatty acid profiles of phospholipids between normal and aposymbiotic pea aphids shows that aphid symbionts are not responsible for the biosynthesis of this unusual fatty acid.

Four natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster, three from Guadeloupe and one from Martinique (French West Indies), were studied with respect to four types of genetically determined traits, namely allozyme frequencies, morphology, ethanol tolerance, and oviposition rhythm. These populations were compared to European (France) and tropical African populations, and, with respect to allozymes alone, to an American population. The four populations from the West Indies were found to be genetically similar; this may reflect a common historical origin, or an adaptive response to similar environmental pressures or possibly some gene flow between the two islands. The comparisons with distant populations led to different conclusions depending upon the trait considered. In the case of allozymes, flies from the West Indies were more similar to tropical African populations than to an American population from Texas, but the main difference observed was in comparison with European populations. The morphology of the West Indies flies resembled a smaller, tropical type, but the size was even smaller than observed in Africa. Both ethanol tolerance and oviposition rhythm were intermediate between flies from tropical Africa and Europe. All these results can be explained in terms of interactions between selection imposed by a tropical environment and the genetic properties of the founder population which first colonized the islands.

A simple, small-sized penetrometer was made to investigate the tissue hardness of plant samples in relation to oviposition by the bug Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner. Depth and speed of probe penetration into the tissues were controlled and the reliability of the device was evaluated. The penetrometer was connected to a microcomputer, and force-time curves with characteristic parameters were thus immediately available. This technique allowed us to estimate the hardness of Pelargonium peltatum (L.) tissues. We showed a correlation between M. caliginosus oviposition sites and the hardness of the P. peltatum tissues (between 0.1 and 0.2 Newton), indicating that hardness should be a choice criterion in this range of values. Below 0.1 Newton, no correlation appeared: the tissues were tender enough to allow oviposition. Above 0.2 Newton, few eggs were laid.
