Ground simulation of space quasi-zero gravity environment is essential in modal testing of space structures. The air flotation method is widely used, in which the air cushion unit is attached to the measured structure. This inevitably increases the total mass of the structure to be tested and leads to the incorrect prediction of modal parameters. And irregular airflow disturbances of the air cushion unit also have negative effects on the test. The fast elimination method is presented to remove the adverse impact in the test data based on measured frequency response functions. Numerical simulations are performed employing the magnetometer structure. Results show that this method effectively removes the adverse mass and the airflow effect.

To consider fiber random distribution at the microscale for the multiscale model based on the micro-mechanics failure (MMF) theory, clustering method is used for the extraction of amplification factors. As the clustering method is a kind of unsupervised machine learning method, the elements with similar mechanical behavior under external loading can be included in a cluster automatically at the microscale. With this modification, the fiber random distribution model can be used for multiscale damage analysis in the framework of MMF theory. To validate the modified multiscale analysis method, progressive damage analysis of a kind of 2D twill woven composites is conducted based on different microscale models. The stress values for microscale models with fiber hexagonal and random distribution patterns are compared first. Much higher stress concentration is generated in the fiber random distribution model due to the smaller inter-fiber distance especially under longitudinal shear loading. The obtained cluster distribution results exhibit the characters of the stress distribution in the two microscale models. Thereafter, tensile and compressive responses of the 2D twill woven composite are predicted with the modified multiscale analysis method and accuracy of the method is verified through comparison with published experimental results. From the simulation results, it can be found that the matrix damage initiation from the model based on the fiber random distribution model is premature compared with that from the model based on the fiber hexagonal distribution model. Besides, under tensile loading, the damage all initiates from the fill tows and propagates to the wrap tows. However, under compressive loading, the matrix damage initiates from the wrap tows in the model based on the fiber random distribution model.

Modal parameter identification is adversely affected by the mass loading of the transducer in experiments, especially when multi-transducers are arranged on the lightweight structure. In order to remove the coupling effects of transducers on each measurement point, a hierarchical multi-transducers eliminations method based on Sherman–Morrison theory is investigated. The method consists of two steps: (1) Decomposition: multiple elimination is decomposed into multi-levels, the relationship of the frequency response functions between each level is illustrated in the tree diagram; (2) Elimination: according to the relationship between each level, the measured frequency response functions are modified level by level. Numerical simulation is conducted by employing a three-degrees-of-freedom spring-mass system and the robustness is verified in the noise case. Experimental investigations are undertaken by employing a lightweight cantilever beam: Laser Doppler vibrometer is adopted to obtain measured frequency response functions without transducer mass loading effect, which are regarded as the target data. The initial frequency response functions are obtained in the case, in which multi-accelerometers are arranged and the effects should be removed. The result shows that the method can effectively decouple the frequency response functions due to transducers. In the elimination process, it is necessary to delete duplicate information (frequency response functions), which can greatly reduce the amount of calculation. And the effects of multi-transducers mass can be removed and the corrected frequency response functions are in quite good agreement with the target values.

To obtain accurate finite-element (FE) models for structural health monitoring (SHM), effective modeling techniques are essential. This paper presents the process for establishing a 131-m large transmission tower’s SHM-oriented FE model. Incorporated procedures are appropriate modeling, manual tuning, model updating, and model validation. Through these works, a detailed realistic model that can reproduce all the experimental dynamic characteristics is obtained, and important conclusions about establishing SHM-oriented FE models for large steel pylon structures can be drawn accordingly: (1) it is necessary to model all the bar members using beam or truss elements of equivalent cross sections for local structural behavior exploration; (2) some components (e.g., ladders, steel plates, and rivets) are no influence on the structural overall stiffness, but their contributions to mass cannot be ignored in modeling; (3) the response surface (RS)-based FE model updating method is effective for complicated pylon models; (4) manual tunings are needed to ensure the quality of model updating.

Random-vibration fatigue evaluation can be of considerable importance in the design phase of aerospace structures due to the severe dynamic loads in service. This paper presents the utilization of modal stress approach to the issue of structural random-vibration fatigue evaluation. Prognosis of random fatigue hotspots by using stress mode shapes is theoretically demonstrated. A two-step procedure is proposed for computational efficiency. Firstly, modal stress analysis is conducted to locate the fatigue hotspots in a dynamic structure. Secondly, the frequency domain-based approach for random fatigue evaluation is performed at these hotspots, as opposed to the computation of the entire structure as before. The capability of stress mode shapes to locate fatigue hotspots is verified by numerical investigations. The finite element model of a single-lap plate structure containing various opening holes was constructed for case study. Six elements were identified as hotspots by using modal stress distributions. Then, random responses and fatigue evaluation of the entire structure were carried out for verification. Good agreement was observed between the fatigue damage contour and the modal stress distributions, which can indicate that the critical positions predicted by stress mode shapes have good accuracy. The calculation time and storage space can be significantly reduced by means of the proposed evaluation procedure. Therefore, the accuracy and efficiency of utilization of modal stress approach in random fatigue evaluation can be ensured.

The rivet joint is an important mechanical connection for hot structures made of ceramic matrix composites. The development of chemical vapor infiltration technology provides a possible application of novel rivets for these structural components. However, connectors can still be the weakest link for structural integrity due to the severe stress concentration around the rivet joint holes. The geometry parameters of the rivet hole can be key influencing factors to the structural strength. A comparative evaluation is presented to analyze the influence of opening-hole shapes on the structural stress concentration of a composite plate. The opening-hole shapes considered include circle, ellipse, and racetrack. The finite element (FE) models of specimens with the three shapes of rivet holes were constructed. The stress distributions of the specimens under tensile loading were analyzed to compare the stress concentration factor (SCF) of different opening-hole shapes. An optimal shape, i.e. racetrack-shaped, was determined based on the SCF reduction of specimen-level comparison. Then, FE models of a composite plate containing rivet holes were built to verify the outperformance of the racetrack-shaped hole. A stress concentration reduction of the plate with racetrack-shaped holes was observed compared to the one with circular holes.

Out-of-plane compression experiments with the strain rate from 0.0001/s to 1000/s are performed on a three-dimensional (3D) fine weave-pierced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) composite using a universal testing machine, a high-speed testing machine, and a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The compressive failure mechanism of the composite is analyzed by a multi-scale analysis method, which ranges from micro-scale defect propagation, through meso-scale microstructure failure, to macro-scale material failure. In order to predict the out-of-plane compressive properties of 3D fine weave-pierced C/C composite at different strain rates, a strain-rate-dependent compressive constitutive model is proposed. The results show that the out-of-plane compressive behavior of the 3D fine weave-pierced C/C composite is sensitive to strain rate. With increasing the strain rate, the initial compressive modulus, the maximum stress, and the strain at the maximum stress increase. The difference in mechanical behavior between quasi-static and high strain rate compression is owing to the strain rate effect on the defect propagation of the 3D fine weave-pierced C/C composite. The proposed constitutive model matches well with the experimental data.

The steady-state vibro-acoustic behavior of a plate–cavity system under harmonic excitations and static temperature loads is investigated using a Wave Based Method (WBM). The solutions of the governing equations of the vibro-acoustic problem considering thermal effects are derived. The coupled wave based model is constructed based on wave functions and particular solution functions for the acoustic and structural system. The accuracy and efficiency of the WBM are verified by the Finite Element Method (FEM) on a plate–cavity system subjected to harmonic excitations and static temperature loads. Then, numerical simulations are performed to investigate the influence of thermal effects on the vibro-acoustic responses of the system. Further, the design sensitivity is implemented using the WBM. Results show that the developed WBM has a better convergence rate than FEM for the investigated plate–cavity system. Although the temperature-dependent material properties of the cavity have little effect on the plate–cavity resonant peaks of the vibro-acoustic responses, they make the other resonant peaks of sound pressure level responses shift towards higher frequency when the temperature increases. When only the thermal stresses of the structural system are considered, the plate–cavity resonant peaks of the vibro-acoustic responses shift towards lower frequency with increasing temperature. When both kinds of thermal effects are considered, the influence of structural thermal stresses plays a leading role in the plate–cavity resonant peaks of vibro-acoustic responses. Sensitivity analysis of transient response plays a crucial role in structural dynamics optimization. In this paper, the sensitivity analysis method for calculating the first-order derivatives of the nonlinear transient response using the real-imaginary perturbations (RIP) in the complex domain is proposed. Independent design parameters are synchronously perturbed using real and imaginary perturbations, respectively. The complex variable finite element method is employed to compute the complex transient response of the perturbed model. The nonlinear transient response sensitivities with respect to each parameter are obtained by separately extracting the real and imaginary responses. The computational accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated by employing a nonlinear multidegree-of-freedom system and a cantilever beam with nonlinear elastic supports. Results show that the response sensitivity with respect to multiple design parameters is obtained accurately by using the proposed method, the computational efficiency of which is increased compared with the complex variable method (CVM). The stability of the transient response sensitivity is significantly affected by the parameter perturbations in the real and imaginary parts. The RIP-imaginary-based response sensitivity is feasible even for an extremely small perturbation in the imaginary part; the RIP-real-based response sensitivity is stable only within a limited real perturbation range.

An innovative yield criterion based on von Mises stress is proposed to represent the strain rate-dependent behavior under dynamic load. Considering the strain rate in the constitutive model, the distortional strain energy density is derived and the yield criterion is established. A plot of yield strength for a range of strain rate reveals that despite the differences in material properties and test methods, the yield strength rise can be represented by a unified criterion. The overall yield behavior of the material under dynamic load can be explained by introducing the strain rate into the constitutive model and threshold distortional strain energy density. This criterion is in a simple form that may be widely applied.

A stochastic dynamic load identification algorithm is proposed for an uncertain dynamic system with correlated random system parameters. The stochastic Green's function is adopted to establish the relationship between the Gaussian excitation and the response. The Green's function is approximated by the second-order perturbation method, and orthogonal polynomial chaos bases are adopted to replace the corresponding bases in the Tayler series. The stochastic system responses and the stochastic forces are then represented by the polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) and the Karhunen–Loève expansion (KLE), respectively. A unified probabilistic framework for the stochastic dynamic problem is formulated based on the PCE. The stochastic load identification problem of an uncertain dynamic system is then transformed into a stochastic load identification problem of an equivalent deterministic system with the orthogonality of the PCE. Numerical simulations and experimental studies with a cantilever beam under a concentrate stochastic force are conducted to estimate the statistical characteristics of the stochastic load from the stochastic structural response samples. Results show that the proposed method has good accuracy in the identification of force's statistics when the level of uncertainty in the system parameters is not small. Large errors in the identified statistics may occur when the correlation in the random system parameters is neglected. Different correlation lengths for the random system parameters are investigated to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

The transient response analysis is important for the design and evaluation of uncertain engineering systems under impact excitations. In this paper, statistical energy analysis (SEA) is developed to evaluate the high-frequency transient energy response of two-subsystem models considering interval uncertainties. Affine arithmetic (AA) and a subinterval technique are introduced into SEA to improve the computational accuracy. Numerical simulations on a coupled-plate and a plate-cavity system considering interval uncertainties are performed. The analysis precision of the proposed approach is validated by Monte Carlo (MC) method. The results show that the analysis precision of the proposed method decreases with the increasing uncertainty level of parameters. The computational accuracy of the proposed method can be significantly improved by employing AA and subinterval technique.

Acoustic fatigue life evaluation is essential for thermal protection structures due to the severe thermo-acoustic load in service. A study on temperaturedependence of acoustic fatigue life for a C/SiC panel is presented in this paper. Effects of temperature on both the structural responses and the S-Ncurves are investigated. The Dirlik method is adopted to predict the fatigue life of a C/SiC panel at three different temperatures respectively. Significant differences are observed from the results of numerical simulations between the fatigue lives of the panel in the three cases. The temperature-dependence of acoustic fatigue life of a C/SiC panel is verified, and fatigue test of the material needs to be more attentively performed.

A hybrid numerical-experimental approach to identify elastic modulus of a textile composite panel using vibration test data is proposed and investigated. Homogenization method is adopted to predict the initial values of elastic parameters of the composite, and parameter identification is transformed to an optimization problem in which the objective function is the minimization of the discrepancies between the experimental and numerical modal data. Case study is conducted employing a woven fabric reinforced composite panel. Three parameters (E11, E22, G12) with higher sensitivities are selected to be identified. It is shown that the elastic parameters can be accurately identified from experimental modal data.
