A monolithically integrated and fully packaged Mach–Zehnder interferometer with semiconductor optical amplifiers (MZI-SOA) is demonstrated as polarisation-independent high-speed demultiplexer for up to 160 Gbit/s optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) data streams.

The all-optical signal processing performance of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is investigated. Calculated switching windows are used to investigate and understand the physical mechanisms limiting the high speed performance. Especially, the co- and counter-propagating operation of the MZI is discussed and important differences in the performance for the two schemes are addressed. The non-regenerative all-optical clear and drop functionality is investigated for a 2, 4 and 8 × 40 Gbit/s signal, showing good performance in the co-propagating case. Regenerative simultaneous clear and drop functionality in a single MZI is demonstrated experimentally and compared to the large signal model predictions.

Abstract: The sorption behavior of microamounts of Hf and Ta on DOWEX 50×8 and DOWEX 1×8 from aqueous HCl/HF solutions has been investigated. Suitable separation conditions for these two elements on cation exchange resins were found in solutions containing 1.5M HCl/10–4M HF and 0.05M HCl/10–3M HF. Kinetic experiments showed that the system can be applied in high speed on-line separations.

A demonstration is presented of 10 Gbit/s 2R regenerative wavelength up- and down-conversion within the C-band as well as up-conversion to the L-band using a monolithically integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer module with semiconductor optical amplifiers (MZI-SOAs). The converted output signals exhibit very low noise and chirp which is accompanied by a negative power penalty.

Monolithically integrated all-optical space switches with modes of different symmetry for the data- and control-signals are realised and tested at 10 GHz. The different symmetries of the modes allow the data- and control-signals to be introduced and extracted through different ports without additional losses of the data-signal. The control-signal passes the switch undisturbed and can be reused in a cascade of switches.

We show both theoretically and experimentally by degenerate four-wave mixing that the combined processes of optical rectification and the linear electro-optic effect contribute to the large effective third-order susceptibilities 14?^3CS_2 of the organic salt 4?N,N^?dimethylamino?4^??N^?-methylstilbazolium toluene?p?sulfonate (DAST).?Furthermore, the knowledge of the cascaded contributions was used to determine absolute values of the third-order susceptibilities as well as their sign.

Background Animal attacks pose a significant public health problem in the United States. Non-venomous animals are the leading cause of mortality in these attacks, and extremity injuries leading to hemorrhage are a common pattern. The Stop the Bleed campaign advocates for public training in bleeding control tactics and public access to bleeding control kits. Controlling life-threatening bleeding, as promoted by the Stop the Bleed campaign, may be a method to reduce preventable death in these attacks. Methodology We searched the Nexus Uni database, which compiles international news media articles, to collect newspaper articles in the United States between 2010 and 2019 that referenced animal attacks on humans in which a tourniquet was applied. We screened articles to assess for inclusion criteria and isolated a single report for each attack. Results A total of 50 individual attacks met the inclusion criteria and were included for data collection. Overall, 92% (n = 46) of the victims survived the attacks, and the average victim age was 33. California was the most common location of the attacks (n = 12, 24%), sharks caused the most attacks (n = 26, 52%), and victims most often sustained isolated extremity injuries (n = 24, 48% for arm and n = 24, 48% for leg). Laypeople applied the most tourniquets (n = 29, 58%), and appliers most frequently used improvised tourniquets (n = 30, 60%). Conclusions While mortality in this series was low, there are hundreds of fatalities from non-venomous animal attacks each year. Equipping and training the at-risk public to stop bleeding may save additional lives.
