Background:Many educational disciplines, especially in health professions, are required by accrediting bodies to introduce or include health informatics (HI); however, faculty (academics) teaching this content may not be well prepared. Objective:The aim of this project was to explore how a doctoral physical therapy (DPT) program could more accurately represent compliance with HI accreditation requirements by identifying hidden instances of relevant content within the curriculum. Method:This exploratory, mixed methods, action research study utilised document review, questionnaires and interviews in the collection of quantitative and qualitative data to enable assessment of knowledge about HI, to determine if HI content was already incorporated in current courses, and, whether the content was accurately reflected in course student learning objectives (SLOs). Change in faculty understanding of HI as a result of this study was also assessed. Results:Of 16 DPT faculty, 13 participated in the pre-interview questionnaire; 8 (50%) representing 22/39 courses participated in the full study. Most were unfamiliar with HI and had unrecognised HI already incorporated in their courses leading to several SLO revisions and additions. Interview and post-interview questionnaire results documented significant increases in HI understanding among faculty. Conclusion:Physical therapy and HIM collaboration was successful in identifying HI content hiding in plain sight. Results revealed multiple instances of unrecognised HI content across the DPT curriculum. Revised and newly added SLOs, with others likely to follow due to this study, will assist faculty with future reaccreditation and in preparing graduates to more fully utilise HI in today’s digital healthcare environments.

Electric bicycles (e-bikes) achieve higher speeds than pedal bicycles, but few studies have investigated the impact on injury rates specific to the pediatric population. Utilizing the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), we compared rates of pediatric injury for e-bikes, bicycles, and gas-engine bicycles (mopeds) from 2011 to 2020.

IMPORTANCE: Variants in the vitamin D–binding protein (DBP) gene (GC) encode DBP isoforms that may affect vitamin D metabolism. However, whether these isoforms modify the effects of vitamin D3 and/or calcium supplementation on colorectal adenoma recurrence is unclear. We hypothesized that supplementation effects may be stronger among those with the DBP2 isoform (encoded by the rs4588*A allele), which is associated with vitamin D deficiency and modified the associations of circulating vitamin D with risk for colorectal neoplasms in observational studies. OBJECTIVE: To estimate supplemental vitamin D3 and/or calcium effects on colorectal adenoma recurrence according to 3 common DBP isoforms (DBP1s, DBP1f, DBP2) encoded by 2 missense variants: rs7041 (NG_012837.3:g.57904T>G NP_001191235.1:p.Asp432Glu) and rs4588 (NG_012837.3:g.57915C>A NP_001191235.1:p.Thr436Lys). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Secondary analysis of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 2259 participants with a recently diagnosed adenoma and no remaining polyps after complete colonoscopy in the US from July 1, 2004, to August 31, 2013. The current analyses were performed from August 12, 2019, to July 16, 2022. INTERVENTIONS: Daily vitamin D3 (1000 IU), calcium (1200 mg), both, or placebo. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: One or more adenomas diagnosed during 3 to 5 years of follow-up. Treatment effects were estimated according to DBP isoform as risk ratios (RRs) and 95% CIs using Poisson regression analysis. RESULTS: Of the 2259 participants randomized (mean [SD] age, 58 [6.8] years; 1033 [64%] men), 1604 non-Hispanic White participants (chosen to avoid population stratification bias) were included in the analysis. Among those with the DBP2 isoform (rs4588*AC or AA), the RRs (95% CI) for adenoma recurrence were 0.84 (0.72-1.00) with vitamin D3 relative to no vitamin D3, 0.83 (95% CI, 0.70-0.99) with calcium relative to no calcium, and 0.76 (95% CI, 0.59-0.98) with both agents relative to neither agent. Conversely, among those without DBP2 (rs4588*CC), the corresponding values were 1.08 (95% CI, 0.93-1.26; P = .03 for interaction) with vitamin D3 relative to no vitamin D3, 0.98 (95% CI, 0.84-1.14; P = .37 for interaction) with calcium relative to no calcium, and 1.09 (0.88-1.36; P = .03 for interaction) with both agents relative to neither agent. Among DBP2 homozygotes (rs4588*AA), the RR for adenoma recurrence was 0.57 (95% CI, 0.31-1.08) with both agents relative to neither agent. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The findings of this secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial suggest that individuals with the DBP2 isoform–encoding rs4588*A allele may particularly benefit from vitamin D3 and/or calcium supplementation for colorectal adenoma prevention. The effects of court dispositions on rearrest for domestic violence was examined for a sample of adults arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence in Hamilton County (Cincinnati), Ohio. Arrestees were tracked for one year after their sentences, if any, had been served. Qualitatively, more severe sentences (e.g., jail combined with probation versus either probation or jail) corresponded with lower recidivism likelihoods. Humid tropical forests play a dominant role in the functioning of Earth but are under increasing threat from changes in land use and climate. How forest vulnerability varies across space and time and what level of stress forests can tolerate before facing a tipping point are poorly understood. Here, we develop a tropical forest vulnerability index (TFVI) to detect and evaluate the vulnerability of global tropical forests to threats across space and time. We show that climate change together with land-use change have slowed the recovery rate of forest carbon cycling. Temporal autocorrelation, as an indicator of this slow recovery, increases substantially for above-ground biomass, gross primary production, and evapotranspiration when climate stress reaches a critical level. Forests in the Americas exhibit extensive vulnerability to these stressors, while in Africa, forests show relative resilience to climate, and in Asia reveal more vulnerability to land use and fragmentation. TFVI can systematically track the response of tropical forests to multiple stressors and provide early-warning signals for regions undergoing critical transitions.

BRAFand NRASmutations arise early in melanoma development, but their associations with low-penetrance melanoma susceptibility loci remain unknown. In the Genes, Environment and Melanoma Study, 1,223 European-origin participants had their incident invasive primary melanomas screened for BRAF/NRASmutations and germline DNA genotyped for 47 single-nucleotide polymorphisms identified as low-penetrant melanoma-risk variants. We used multinomial logistic regression to simultaneously examine each single-nucleotide polymorphism’s relationship to BRAFV600E, BRAFV600K, BRAFother, and NRAS+ relative to BRAF–/NRAS–melanoma adjusted for study features. IRF4rs12203592*T was associated with BRAFV600E (odds ratio [OR] = 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.43–0.79) and V600K (OR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.41–1.03), but not BRAFother or NRAS+melanoma. A global test of etiologic heterogeneity (Pglobal = 0.001) passed false discovery (Pglobal = 0.0026). PLA2G6rs132985*T was associated with BRAFV600E (OR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.05–1.67) and BRAFother (OR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.11–2.98), but not BRAFV600K or NRAS+melanoma. The test for etiologic heterogeneity (Pglobal) was 0.005. The IRF4rs12203592 associations were slightly attenuated after adjustment for melanoma-risk phenotypes. The PLA2G6rs132985 associations were independent of phenotypes. IRF4and PLA2G6inherited genotypes may influence melanoma BRAF/NRASsubtype development.

Managing forests for climate change mitigation requires action by diverse stakeholders undertaking different activities with overlapping objectives and spatial impacts. To date, several forest carbon monitoring systems have been developed for different regions using various data, methods and assumptions, making it difficult to evaluate mitigation performance consistently across scales. Here, we integrate ground and Earth observation data to map annual forest-related greenhouse gas emissions and removals globally at a spatial resolution of 30 m over the years 2001–2019. We estimate that global forests were a net carbon sink of −7.6 ± 49 GtCO2e yr−1, reflecting a balance between gross carbon removals (−15.6 ± 49 GtCO2e yr−1) and gross emissions from deforestation and other disturbances (8.1 ± 2.5 GtCO2e yr−1). The geospatial monitoring framework introduced here supports climate policy development by promoting alignment and transparency in setting priorities and tracking collective progress towards forest-specific climate mitigation goals with both local detail and global consistency.

To constrain global warming, we must strongly curtail greenhouse gas emissions and capture excess atmospheric carbon dioxide1,2. Regrowing natural forests is a prominent strategy for capturing additional carbon3, but accurate assessments of its potential are limited by uncertainty and variability in carbon accumulation rates2,3. To assess why and where rates differ, here we compile 13,112 georeferenced measurements of carbon accumulation. Climatic factors explain variation in rates better than land-use history, so we combine the field measurements with 66 environmental covariate layers to create a global, one-kilometre-resolution map of potential aboveground carbon accumulation rates for the first 30 years of natural forest regrowth. This map shows over 100-fold variation in rates across the globe, and indicates that default rates from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)4,5may underestimate aboveground carbon accumulation rates by 32 per cent on average and do not capture eight-fold variation within ecozones. Conversely, we conclude that maximum climate mitigation potential from natural forest regrowth is 11 per cent lower than previously reported3owing to the use of overly high rates for the location of potential new forest. Although our data compilation includes more studies and sites than previous efforts, our results depend on data availability, which is concentrated in ten countries, and data quality, which varies across studies. However, the plots cover most of the environmental conditions across the areas for which we predicted carbon accumulation rates (except for northern Africa and northeast Asia). We therefore provide a robust and globally consistent tool for assessing natural forest regrowth as a climate mitigation strategy.

Associations of MC1Rwith BRAFmutations in melanoma have been inconsistent between studies. We sought to determine for 1,227 participants in the international population-based Genes, Environment, and Melanoma (GEM) study whether MC1Rand phenotypes were associated with melanoma BRAF/NRASsubtypes. We used logistic regression adjusted by age, sex, and study design features and examined effect modifications. BRAF+were associated with younger age, blond/light brown hair, increased nevi, and less freckling, and NRAS+with older age relative to the wild type (BRAF–/NRAS–) melanomas (all P< 0.05). Comparing specific BRAFsubtypes to the wild type, BRAFV600E was associated with younger age, blond/light brown hair, and increased nevi and V600K with increased nevi and less freckling (all P< 0.05). MC1Rwas positively associated with BRAFV600E cases but only among individuals with darker phototypes or darker hair (Pinteraction< 0.05) but inversely associated with BRAFV600K (Ptrend = 0.006) with no significant effect modification by phenotypes. These results support distinct etiologies for BRAFV600E, BRAFV600K, NRAS+, and wild-type melanomas. MC1R’s associations with BRAFV600E cases limited to individuals with darker phenotypes indicate that MC1Rgenotypes specifically provide information about BRAFV600E melanoma risk in those not considered high risk based on phenotype. Our results also suggest that melanin pathways deserve further study in BRAFV600E melanomagenesis.

This paper aims to explore the potential of latecomer cities in sustainability transitions from the demand side. The case study investigates the role of users and their social ties in influencing the popularisation of solar water heaters in a latecomer city Dezhou, in contrast to a more developed counterpart, Beijing. The two cities show vast differences in user preferences towards the low-tech environmental innovation, and the stronger social ties in Dezhou facilitate the diffusion through not only frequent social learning and peer pressure, but also enhancing user-producer trust and relation. These findings suggest that latecomer cities could provide less harsh selection environments for disruptive environmental innovations and their comparatively homogenous social ties could be harnessed to empower niche development.

The article discusses how interprofessional education (IE) can help health information management (HIM) professionals to maintain their profession as a vital part of healthcare delivery teams. Topics covered include the areas of application for IE including the sharing of HI, the tips for HIM practitioners on how to ensure interprofessional outcomes including the creation of awareness of IE opportunities, and the benefits of IE including improved patient outcomes.

This paper is premised on the notion that actors play a central role in shaping their institutional contexts. The paper adds to scholarship in this area by bringing together three disparate cases with a common analytical entry point: the city region. Despite their multiple scales and different sites of governance, these cases are united by a common theme, exemplified in each city region: addressing the contradictions of rapid development, in particular rapid growth and competitiveness. Using the conceptual framework of interpretive institutionalism, we examine how dilemmas, in this case the pressure of rapid growth in regions, are informed by the different traditions for understanding the role of the market in delivering project outcomes. Our findings show this difference in institutional norms and the variance among the different paradigms.
