Abstract: A radiochemical method for producing 82Se sources with an ultra-low level of contamination of natural radionuclides (40K, decay products of 232Th and 238U) has been developed based on cation-exchange chromatographic purification with reverse removal of impurities. It includes chromatographic separation (purification), reduction, conditioning (which includes decantation, centrifugation, washing, grinding, and drying), and 82Se foil production. The conditioning stage, during which highly dispersed elemental selenium is obtained by the reduction of purified selenious acid (H2SeO3) with sulfur dioxide (SO2) represents the crucial step in the preparation of radiopure 82Se samples. The natural selenium (600 g) was first produced in this procedure in order to refine the method. The technique developed was then used to produce 2.5 kg of radiopure enriched selenium (82Se). The produced 82Se samples were wrapped in polyethylene (12 μm thick) and radionuclides present in the sample were analyzed with the BiPo-3 detector. The radiopurity of the plastic materials (chromatographic column material and polypropylene chemical vessels), which were used at all stages, was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The radiopurity of the 82Se foils was checked by measurements with the BiPo-3 spectrometer, which confirmed the high purity of the final product. The measured contamination level for 208Tl was 8–54 μBq/kg, and for 214Bi the detection limit of 600 μBq/kg has been reached.

Abstract: Employing the Ginzburg–Landau phase-field theory, a new coupled dynamic thermo-mechanical 3D model has been proposed for modeling the cubic-to-tetragonal martensitic transformations in shape memory alloy (SMA) nanostructures. The stress-induced phase transformations and thermo-mechanical behavior of nanostructured SMAs have been investigated. The mechanical and thermal hysteresis phenomena, local non-uniform phase transformations and corresponding non-uniform temperatures and deformations’ distributions are captured successfully using the developed model. The predicted microstructure evolution qualitatively matches with the experimental observations. The developed coupled dynamic model has provided a better understanding of underlying martensitic transformation mechanisms in SMAs, as well as their effect on the thermo-mechanical behavior of nanostructures. 4. The impact of a Cadaver-Based Airway Lab on Critical Care Fellows’ Direct Laryngoscopy Skills

Abstract: This study sought to determine the impact of a cadaver-based airway lab on critical care medicine fellows’ direct laryngoscopy skills and hypothesised that fellows can improve their self-reported percentage of glottic opening (POGO) scores in cadaver models to achieve POGO scores similar to that of expert faculty. Nineteen fellows attended an airway management skills laboratory utilising five modified cadavers. Initial fellow POGO (POGOi) visualised was recorded at the onset with direct laryngoscopy. Maximum fellow POGO score with optimised direct laryngoscopy was recorded after two additional hours of teaching and also during a testing phase several days later. Data was assessed for significant differences between trainee POGO scores at each time interval and between trainee POGO scores and expert scores. A departmental procedural database was utilised to examine success rates of intubation as a clinical correlation. Fellows’ mean POGOi scores, averaged across all five specimens, were significantly lower than both their maximum POGO scores and their testing phase POGO scores. Mean POGOi scores for fellows, averaged over all five cadavers, were lower than the instructors’ POGOi scores. There was no difference between fellows’ and instructors’ mean maximum POGO or mean testing phase POGO scores. Clinical success rates of intubation were over 98%. A short training session using modified cadavers can be utilised to teach new critical care medicine fellows additional techniques for airway management and assist them in obtaining higher POGO scores, similar to those of expert instructors. Success rates of clinical intubations were favourable in the wake of this training.

Abstract: Bemisia tabaciGenn. biotype B is a widely distributed plant pest that represents one of the major constraints for horticultural crop production. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the oviposition preference, survivorship, and development of B. tabacibiotype B on semi-cultivated genotypes of Capsicum annuumfrom southeast Mexico. In free-choice experiments to evaluate the oviposition preference, lower number of eggs laid by B. tabacibiotype B was observed in the genotypes Maax and Xcat´ik relative to that in the commercial genotype Parado. Egg hatchability was significantly lower in Pico Paloma, Bolita, Blanco, Chawa, Payaso, and Xcat´ik than in the rest of the genotypes, including the commercial genotype Jalapeño. Likewise, survivorship of nymphs was significantly lower in Pico Paloma, Bolita, and Blanco than in the remaining genotypes. Nymph developmental time and the period of development from egg to adult were the shortest in Amaxito. Therefore, sources of resistance to B. tabacibiotype B by antibiosis (accumulation of plant defense compounds) might be found in the semi-cultivated genotypes Pico Paloma, Bolita, and Blanco.

Abstract: Cassava (Manihot esculentaCrantz), a highly heterozygous crop, is devastated by cassava mosaic disease (CMD). The discovery of the CMD2dominant gene is helpful in the genetic analysis of CMD resistance. Molecular markers for CMD2gene were used to introgress CMD resistance into Latin American cassava genotypes and validated in the field for 4 yr for stability of resistance conferred by CMD2. Field screening identified 64 Latin American genotypes with stable resistance to CMD. Resistance to CMD of two Nigerian cassava cultivars (TMS 97/2205 and TMS 98/0505) was analyzed with markers and in the field. Molecular data indicated that CMD resistance in the two Nigerian cultivars was mediated by the CMD2gene. Results showed TMS 97/2205 to be highly resistant to CMD in three ecological zones in Nigeria. Further genetic analysis of this genotype as a source of high level of resistance to CMD using a segregating F1population derived from a TMS 97/2205 × NR 8083 cross was initiated using 530 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for CMD resistance. A marker (NS198) associated with a QTL for CMD resistance, explaining 11% of the phenotypic variance observed, was identified. The combined effect of this QTL and CMD2may account for the high level of resistance of TMS 97/2205. The resistance profile of the evaluated CMD2genotypes in growth cycle was not uniform and was affected by genetic background. The discovery of a new QTL (CMD3) for CMD resistance in TMS 97/2205 offers new opportunities for pyramiding CMD genes for enhanced durability of CMD resistance in cassava.

8. Genetic Yield Gains of the CIMMYT International Semi‐Arid Wheat Yield Trials from 1994 to 2010

Abstract: Genetic progress for yield has been assessed globally in the semi‐arid wheat yield trials (SAWYTs) of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) over a 17‐yr period. Grain yield expressed as a percentage of the long‐term check cultivar Dharwar Dry has increased at approximately 1% yr−1between 1994 and 2010. In real terms, yield has been increased at a rate of 31 kg ha−1yr−1. The rate of yield increase in high‐yielding environments was twice that of low‐yielding environments. The average yield of low‐yielding sites are significantly correlated with the average yield of high‐yielding sites (p< 0.001), and many of the highest‐yielding lines of the various SAWYT performed well at both low‐ and high‐yielding sites. The key parents Attila and Pastor were consistently high yielding in several of the early SAWYT. In later trials their derivatives were also high yielding. The line Vorobey, developed by crossing Pastor with a synthetic derivative, showed outstanding yield in SAWYT 11 and 12. The performance of CIMMYT lines compared to local check cultivars was relatively stable over time. A success rate was calculated as the ratio of the number of sites where a given line is superior to the local check divided by the total number of sites. On average, the success rate of the 10% best lines was 61% in low‐yielding sites and 62% in high‐yielding sites.

Abstract: The Herschel ATLAS is the largest open-time key project that will be carried out on the Herschel Space Observatory. It will survey 570 deg2of the extragalactic sky, 4 times larger than all the other Herschel extragalactic surveys combined, in five far-infrared and submillimeter bands. We describe the survey, the complementary multiwavelength data sets that will be combined with the Herschel data, and the six major science programs we are undertaking. Using new models based on a previous submillimeter survey of galaxies, we present predictions of the properties of the ATLAS sources in other wave bands.

Abstract: The Herschel Reference Survey is a Herschel guaranteed time key project and will be a benchmark study of dust in the nearby universe. The survey will complement a number of other Herschel key projects including large cosmological surveys that trace dust in the distant universe. We will use Herschel to produce images of a statistically-complete sample of 323 galaxies at 250, 350, and 500 ?m. The sample is volume-limited, containing sources with distances between 15 and 25 Mpc and flux limits in the Kband to minimize the selection effects associated with dust and with young high-mass stars and to introduce a selection in stellar mass. The sample spans the whole range of morphological types (ellipticals to late-type spirals) and environments (from the field to the center of the Virgo Cluster) and as such will be useful for other purposes than our own. We plan to use the survey to investigate (i) the dust content of galaxies as a function of Hubble type, stellar mass, and environment; (ii) the connection between the dust content and composition and the other phases of the interstellar medium; and (iii) the origin and evolution of dust in galaxies. In this article, we describe the goals of the survey, the details of the sample and some of the auxiliary observing programs that we have started to collect complementary data. We also use the available multifrequency data to carry out an analysis of the statistical properties of the sample.

11. Variation in Agronomic, Rust Reaction and Grain Quality Characteristics in a Collection of Winter and Facultative Wheat Varieties

Abstract: A collection of 110 wheat varieties from different agroecological zones in Central Asia and the Caucasus (CAC), Russia, and Ukraine were evaluated for growth habit (winter, facultative, spring), growth type (prostrate versus erect), days to heading, resistance to yellow rust and leaf rust, and quality traits. The study was conducted at the experimental farms of International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) at Terbol in Lebanon and Tel Hadya in Syria to identify promising rust resistant wheat cultivars and lines that can be used in crossing program by cooperative Turkey-CIMMYT-ICARDA winter wheat breeding program. The study also aimed to assess the distribution of winter versus facultative versus spring types in the regional gene pool. Higher frequencies of winter types occurred in germplasm from Ukraine, Russia, southern Kazakhstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan and Georgia, whereas the frequencies of spring wheat in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan were 33% and 20%, respectively. There were significant correlations between growth type, and both growth habit and cold tolerance (r= 0.600*** and 0.57**). This indicates that winter wheat varieties tend to be prostrate and cold tolerant, whereas facultative and spring wheats have are more erect and cold sensitive. Among the tested material 60% of varieties were resistant to yellow rust and 44%—to leaf rust. More than 20 genotypes demonstrated resistance to both rusts and useful variation for other traits proving good parents for crosses.

13. Anodic Electrosynthesis of a Thin Film of Cu<INF>2</INF>S on a Gold Electrode. A Voltammetric, Nanoelectrogravimetric, and I/t Transient Study

Abstract: The electroformation of a Cu2S phase, obtained by sulfidization of a thin film of copper placed by the spin-coating technique onto the gold surface of a gold/quartz crystal that is part of an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical quartz crystal microgravimetry. The electrolytic medium employed was a bisulfide-containing aqueous buffered solution (pH 9.2). CV parameters showed that the formation of the Cu2S phase occurred by means of an irreversible diffusion-controlled mechanism, where a first uncomplicated electron transfer was the rate-determining step. The EQCM data showed that the initially formed phase was Cu2S, which was later oxidized to nonstoichiometric compounds (Cu(2-x)S) and CuS. Furthermore ΔQ/Δm data analysis established that the electron reaction valence (n) was close to 2 for all electrochemical processes where Cu/S compounds were involved. The nucleation and growth mechanism (NGM) of the Cu2S phase corresponded to a bidimensional instantaneous mechanism containing two contributions, one controlled by diffusion and the other controlled by charge transfer. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that the Cu2S phase electroformed on the gold/crystal quartz electrode was deposited as hemispherical particles (sized between 40 and 130 nm) on the terraces and in the cavities present in the gold film.

Abstract: CuxS (x → 2) thin films were obtained by sulfidization of copper thin films previously obtained by spin-coating from a dichloromethane solution of [Cu(II)(2-ethyl hexanoate)2(H2O)2] deposited on ITO substrate, irradiated with UV light and electrochemically reduced. Through cyclic voltammetry experiences performed in a 0.05 M Na2B4O7 buffer solution containing 5 mM Na2S, the electroformation mechanism of CuxS phase is controlled by a first electron transfer, obtaining an initial formation of Cu(HS)ads that evolves to a CuxS phase. Potentiostatic current transient recorded in the potential range of −0.8 V ≤ E ≤ −0.7 V showed that the nucleation and growth mechanism of the CuxS phase obeys a two-dimensional instantaneous process with diffusional and charge-transfer contributions. AFM analysis of the deposits shows that CuxS phase is preferentially deposited in the valleys left by ITO particles. The average size of CuxS particles is close to 20 nm. Cyclic voltammetry results, electromotive force determination in the Cu/%@mt;sys@%Cu%@sx@%aq%@be@%2+%@sxx@%%@mx@% /CuxS galvanic cell, EDAX, and UV analysis demonstrate that the stoichiometric factor x in CuxS is close to 2. The electro-obtained CuxS phase was unstable and evolved to other nonstoichiometric compounds at open circuit. The processes responsible for the instability were the own oxidation of CuxS phase and the water reduction that takes place over CuxS and bare ITO particles. The last process was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Photoelectrochemical measurements in the stability potential range of the CuxS phase shows that the electro-obtained phase presents a p-type conductivity.

Abstract: Anion photoelectron spectra of size selected AlxPy^- (x, y ≤ 4) clusters have been taken at photodetachment wavelengths of 266 nm (4.661 eV), 355 nm (3.493), and 416 nm (2.980 eV). The spectra show transitions to multiple neutral electronic states, and several of these bands are vibrationally resolved. We report electron affinities, term values, and vibrational frequencies of the corresponding neutral and anion states, where possible. Detailed assignments are proposed for the AlP2^-, Al2P^-, and Al2P2^- spectra with the aid of electronic structure calculations. Results are compared with comparably sized GaxPy^- and InxPy^- clusters.

25. Mediators of Microvascular Injury in Dermal Burn Wounds

Abstract: In previous studies we have demonstrated that second-degree thermal injury of skin in rats leads to secondary effects, such as systemic complement activation, C5a-mediated activation of blood neutrophils, their adhesion-molecule-guided accumulation in lung capillaries and the development of acute pulmonary injury, largely caused by neutrophil-derived toxic oxygen metabolites. In the dermal burn wound, however, pathophysiologic events are less well understood. The injury is fully developed at four hours post-burn. To further elucidate the pathogenesis of the “late phase” dermal vascular damage, rats were depleted of neutrophils or complement by pretreatment with rabbit antibody against rat neutrophils or with cobra venom factor, respectively. In other experiments, rats were treated with blocking antibodies to IL-6, IL-1, and TNFα immediately following thermal burning or were pretreated with hydroxyl radical scavengers (dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethyl thiourea). Extravasation of 125I-labeled bovine serum albumin into the burned skin was studied, as well as, skin myeloperoxidase levels. The studies revealed that, like in secondary lung injury, neutrophils and toxic oxygen metabolites, are required for full development of microvascular injury. In contrast, however, development of dermal vascular damage in thermally injured rats was not affected by complement depletion. Our data suggest that the development of microvascular injury in the dermal burn wound is complement-independent, involves the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1, TNFα and IL-6, and may result from reactive oxygen metabolites generated by neutrophils accumulating in the burn wound.

Abstract: Enteroadherent Escherichia coli (EAEC) strains identified by adherence to HEp-2 tissue culture cells have been incriminated epidemiologically as important etiologic agents of diarrheal disease in both adult travelers and children in developing countries. One strain, JM 221, with no recognized E. coli virulence characteristics other than adherence to HEp-2 cells, caused diarrhea in 5 of 16 volunteers ingesting it. We studied the secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) responses to EAEC JM 221 of five volunteers with diarrhea and five volunteers who remained healthy after challenge. sIgA was extracted from stools obtained prechallenge and 7 days postchallenge. Total sIgA was standardized for all specimens. Specific sIgA titers were determined by dot blotting with the following JM 221 antigens: water-extractable surface antigens, whole cells, lipopolysaccharides, and outer membrane proteins. All five subjects who became ill had fourfold or greater rises in titers against each of the four antigens. The five subjects who remained healthy following challenge did not exhibit significant rises in titers to any JM 221 antigens, but their mean titers were significantly higher than the mean prechallenge titers of the volunteers with diarrhea, suggesting that high intestinal sIgA titers may be protective. The significant increases in intestinal antibody against JM 221 in the subjects who became ill is further evidence of the enteropathogenicity of EAEC strains.

Abstract: To assess the variability of the response to exogenous atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), it was infused at the rate of 1 µg/min for 2 h in 6 salt-loaded normal volunteers under controlled conditions on 2 occasions at an interval of 1 week. The effect on solute excretion and the haemodynamic and endocrine actions were highly reproducible. The constant ANP infusion caused a delayed and prolonged excretion of sodium, chloride and calcium, no change in potassium or phosphate excretion or in glomerular filtration rate but a marked decrease in renal plasma flow. Blood pressure, heart rate and the plasma levels of angiotensin II, aldosterone, arginine vasopressin and plasma renin activity were unaltered. The effect of a 2-h infusion of ANP 0.5 µg/min or its vehicle on apparent hepatic blood flow (HBF) was also studied in 14 normal volunteers by measuring the indocyanine green clearance. A 21% decrease in HBF was observed in subjects who received the ANP infusion (p<0.01 vs vehicle). Thus, ANP infused at a dose that did not lower blood pressure decreased both renal and liver blood flow in normotensive volunteers. The renal and endocrine responses to ANP were reproducible over a 1-week interval.

Abstract: Synthetic atrial natriuretic peptide, containing 26 amino acids in the rat sequence, L-364,343 (Ileu-ANP), was infused intravenously at increasing rates (1–40 μg/min) into four normal volunteers. Mean intraarterial blood pressure decreased and heart rate increased in cumulative-dose–dependent fashion. Skin blood flow as measured with a laser Doppler device rose already with a cumulative dose of 55 μg Ileu-ANP and further rises were directly related to dose. The only side effects observed were those accompanying symptomatic hypotension at higher doses. These findings provide strong evidence that Ileu-ANP acts as a vasodilator in normal volunteers.

Abstract: Three new angiotensin converting-enzyme inhibitors were given orally to 20 men in single doses ranging from 1.25 to 40 mg. Two of them induced comparable marked inhibition of both the blood pressure response to exogenous angiotensin I and plasma converting-enzyme activity. Onset of action was relatively slow, but 21 to 24 hr after drug plasma converting-enzyme activity was still clearly reduced. The third was less active. There was a close correlation between blood pressure response on administration of angiotensin I and plasma converting-enzyme activity. There were no adverse effects. These new drugs are interesting because of their long duration of action. 33. Acute Toxicological Effects in Rats Treated with a Mixture of Commercially Formulated Products Containing Methyl Parathion and Permethrin

Abstract: The study examined the interactions between a commercial formulation of methyl parathion (CF-MP) and a commercially formulated product of permethrin (CF-PMT) in male rats. The acute toxicity (LD50values) and brain cholinesterase activity were investigated as toxicological endpoints. Results indicated that CF-MP modified the acute toxicity of CF-PMT. When animals were treated with a mixture, the addition of 380 mg/kg of CF-MP reduced the LD50of CF-PMT by only 9.0%; however, when rats received CF-MP at 464 mg/kg, the LD50of CF-PMT was reduced by 37% (P< 0.001). Also, CF-PMT decreased the CF-MP-induced inhibition of cholinesterase activity by 50% (P< 0.05). It was interesting to observe that xylene, which is the most abundant component in the vehicle of both formulations, had no effect on the CF-MP-induced inhibition of the cholinesterase activity. There was no relation between lethality and the inhibition of the brain cholinesterase activity in rats treated with mixtures containing CF-MP + CF-PMT or with either commercially formulated product alone. Considering the increased toxicity observed in rats treated with CF-PMT + CF-MP, it would be advisable to investigate further the interactions between both pesticides.

36. Evidence for long-term memory of the mucosal immune system: milk secretory immunoglobulin A against Shigella lipopolysaccharides

Abstract: Although the common mucosal immune system has generally been considered to have only short-term memory, recent data suggest that long-term memory exists for Shigella virulence plasmid antigens. Because such antigens might cross-react with environmental antigens, we investigated milk for the persistence of antibodies to the specific Shigella lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to detect secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) against Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei LPS in milk samples were developed; 15 random milk samples tested on different days correlated from one day to the next (P = 0.0001). Of 18 Mexican mothers, 18 (100%) had one or more milk samples positive for anti-S. flexneri LPS, 14 (78%) had one or more milk samples positive for anti-S. sonnei LPS, and 14 (78%) had one or more milk samples positive for both. Of 27 Houston mothers, 16 (59%) had one or more milk samples positive for anti-S. flexneri LPS, 7 (26%) had one or more milk samples positive for anti-S. sonnei LPS, and 5 (19%) had one or more milk samples positive for both. Mexican mothers were significantly more likely than Houston mothers to have at least one sample with a positive titer for anti-S. flexneri LPS (P less than 0.02) and at least one sample with a positive titer for anti-S. sonnei LPS (P less than 0.002). Although the Houston women had a lower rate of titer positivity for both Shigella species, the rate was too high to be consistent with short-lived mucosal immunity. It is unlikely that 18 of the 27 Houston women had shigellosis during or just prior to lactation. The data suggest that there exists a long-term hormonally driven memory in the secretory immune system for Shigella spp.

37. Pharmacokinetics of synthetic atrial natriuretic peptides in normal men

Abstract: The kinetics of atrial natriuretic peptides (ANP) and the kinetic profile of their effect on blood pressure and renal hemodynamic and electrolyte excretion were investigated in 20 salt-loaded healthy volunteers during and after constant rate infusion. At steady state, mean plasma concentrations of ANP were measured at 210, 430, and 2990 pg/ml and mean systemic clearance was 2.6, 2.5, and 1.7 L/min for ANP infusion rates of 0.5, 1, and 5 μg/min, respectively, which corresponds to the clearance rate of other vasoactive peptide hormones. The apparent volume of distribution averaged 17 L and the mean half-life was 4.5 minutes. ANP induced dose-related effects on systemic and renal hemodynamic, as well as urinary electrolyte excretion, albeit with a time lag between onset and full effect.

38. Polymerase chain reaction for diagnosis of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection and hemolytic-uremic syndrome

Abstract: Two pairs of oligonucleotide primers were designed to amplify fragments of the genes for Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) and SLT-II in a single reaction. A 370-bp segment and a 283-bp segment were amplified for SLT-I and SLT-II, respectively. The specificities of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification products were confirmed by using radioactively labeled oligonucleotide probes. SLT sequences were amplified from DNA isolated from 13 previously characterized enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains. No amplification product was produced by using DNA from 20 non-EHEC strains. As little as one bacterial genome was detectable. PCR was then applied to DNA isolated directly from stool samples. We had to remove inhibitors of PCR that were present in lysates prepared from stool samples before amplification was achieved. First, we evaluated the sensitivity of PCR for the detection of known numbers of EHEC added to normal stools. Second, three children with SLT in their stools were shown to have SLT sequences in their stools by PCR. Two of these children had hemolytic-uremic syndrome, and a third child was asymptomatic. Stool specimens collected from another 26 asymptomatic children were negative by PCR for SLT sequences. PCR can be used to diagnose EHEC infections without prior culture of stool specimens.

Abstract: A prodrug of methyldopa, the pivaloyloxyethyl (POE) ester, was administered orally to healthy human volunteers at doses equivalent to 500 and 1000 mg of methyldopa and was compared to oral and intravenous doses of methyldopa. The time courses of availability of methyldopa to the general circulation were compared and contrasted with the model-independent estimates of total systemic availability. The POE ester of methyldopa is completely hydrolyzed on the first pass; delivery of methyldopa to the general circulation was faster, more uniform, and more extensive compared to orally administered methyldopa. The systemic availability of methyldopa averaged 64% of the dose with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 15% for the prodrug treatments compared to 27% of the dose with a CV of 63% for methyldopa. First-pass metabolism of drug to the mono-O-sulfate conjugate of methyldopa was lower for the POE ester than for methyldopa.

Abstract: Four cases of Pentazocine dependence are presented with reference to previous clinical and experimental data as to its addiction or dependence liability. AMA Council on drugs has concluded that stricter control of the drug is not warranted because the case reports of its dependency show that it occurs only in dependence-prone individuals. Three of our cases did not have any history of previous drug use. It is suggested that a warning that the drug may be habit forming should be issued with each prescription.

Abstract: We have determined the luminosity function of 250 μm-selected galaxies detected in the ~14 deg2science demonstration region of the Herschel-ATLAS project out to a redshift of z= 0.5. Our findings very clearly show that the luminosity function evolves steadily out to this redshift. By selecting a sub-group of sources within a fixed luminosity interval where incompleteness effects are minimal, we have measured a smooth increase in the comoving 250 μm luminosity density out to z= 0.2 where it is 3.6-0.9+1.4times higher than the local value.

Abstract: The Herschel survey, H-ATLAS, with its large areal coverage, has recently discovered a number of bright, strongly lensed high-zsubmillimeter galaxies. The strong magnification makes it possible to study molecular species other than CO, which are otherwise difficult to observe in high-zgalaxies. Among the lensed galaxies already identified by H-ATLAS, the source J090302.9-014127B (SDP.17b) at z= 2.305 is remarkable because of its excitation conditions and a tentative detection of the H2O 202-111emission line (Lupu et al. 2010, ApJ, submitted). We report observations of this line in SDP.17b using the IRAM interferometer equipped with its new 277–371 GHz receivers. The H2O line is detected at a redshift of z= 2.3049 ± 0.0006, with a flux of 7.8 ± 0.5 Jy km s-1and a FWHM of 250 ± 60 km s-1. The new flux is 2.4 times weaker than the previous tentative detection, although both remain marginally consistent within 1.6σ. The intrinsic line luminosity and ratio of H2O(202− 111)/CO(8 − 7) are comparable with those of the nearby starburst/enshrouded-AGN Mrk 231, and the ratio I(H2O)/LFIRis even higher, suggesting that SDP.17b could also host a luminous AGN. The detection of a strong H2O 202− 111line in SDP.17b implies an efficient excitation mechanism of the water levels that must occur in very dense and warm interstellar gas probably similar to Mrk 231.

Abstract: MESS (Mass-loss of Evolved StarS) is a guaranteed time key program that uses the PACS and SPIRE instruments on board the Herschel space observatory to observe a representative sample of evolved stars, that include asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and post-AGB stars, planetary nebulae and red supergiants, as well as luminous blue variables, Wolf-Rayet stars and supernova remnants. In total, of order 150 objects are observed in imaging and about 50 objects inspectroscopy.

Abstract: HerschelPACS and SPIRE images have been obtained over a 30' × 30' area around the well-known carbon star CW Leo (IRC +10 216). An extended structure is found in an incomplete arc of ~22' diameter, which is cospatial with the termination shock due to interaction with the interstellar medium (ISM) as defined by Sahai & Chronopoulos from ultraviolet GALEX images. Fluxes are derived in the 70, 160, 250, 350, and 550 μm bands in the region where the interaction with the ISM takes place, and this can be fitted with a modified black body with a temperature of 25 ±3 K. Using the published proper motion and radial velocity for the star, we derive a heliocentric space motion of 25.1 km s-1. Using the PACS and SPIRE data and the analytical formula of the bow shock structure, we infer a de-projected standoff distance of the bow shock of R0= (8.0 ±0.3) × 1017cm. We also derive a relative velocity of the star with respect to the ISM of (106.6 ±8.7)/$\sqrt{n_{\rm ISM}}$km s-1, where nISMis the number density of the local ISM.

Abstract: With a luminosity >105$L_{\odot}$and a mass-loss rate of ~2 × 10-4$M_{\odot}$yr-1, the red supergiant VY CMa truly is a spectacular object. Because of its extreme evolutionary state, it could explode as supernova any time. Studying its circumstellar material, into which the supernova blast will run, provides interesting constraints on supernova explosions and on the rich chemistry taking place in such complex circumstellar envelopes. We have obtained spectroscopy of VY CMa over the full wavelength range offered by the PACS and SPIRE instruments of Herschel, i.e. 55–672 micron. The observations show the spectral fingerprints of more than 900 spectral lines, of which more than half belong to water. In total, we have identified 13 different molecules and some of their isotopologues. A first analysis shows that water is abundantly present, with an ortho-to-para ratio as low as ~1.3:1, and that chemical non-equilibrium processes determine the abundance fractions in the inner envelope.
