Online laboratories can be an effective way to introduce students to lab concepts while providing flexibility, increased access, and reduced costs. However, online labs might lack the authentic research experience that can be gained by doing hands-on lab work. This study explores student perceptions of an online, inquiry-based introductory biology lab. Students participated in a semester-long curriculum during summer 2020. Upon completion of the course, students responded to a survey about their thoughts and attitudes toward the material and mode of delivery. Overall, students perceived the course favorably, with more than 90% of students indicating that they were satisfied with the course. Students had strong positive impressions of the writing-intensive sections of the course, which included a research proposal and a lab report. They also recognized that these components helped contribute to their own learning. This positive influence on student perceptions indicates that an online inquiry-based lab can be an effective means for student participation in biology labs when in-person lab options are not available.

Noting the continuing concern about reading standards, reading processes, and methods of teaching reading, this booklet reviews current research in reading. Sections of the booklet discuss: (1) research on reading processes; (2) how fluent readers recognize words; (3) what beginning readers need to know about language; (4) what beginning readers need to know about print; (5) how children learn to read; (6) the reading-writing-spelling connection; (7) the content and organization of reading instruction; (8) reading schemes (basal reading series); (9) the role of parents and other care-givers; and (10) children with reading difficulties. If boys are spending nine hours a day media multitasking and prefer computers to books, shouldn't they be successful at online learning? Yet, it is not so simple. Online learning requires online reading, which means that boys, who are significantly poorer readers than girls in every nation in the world, may well be struggling to keep up. Text‐to‐speech software and many other online tools would seem to offer personalized support for weaker readers, but there is growing evidence that even with multimedia texts, the sheer volume of curricular material can be too great. Add to this the fact that an online student may not have access to the learning that can come from group interaction, nor to the social and emotional support that can come from peers or a teacher, and the online reader could be heading for a learning apocalypse.

Sustainable manufacturing systems require accounting for both product and process level environmental impacts. Established methods and databases are available for product level environmental impact assessment. However, there is a lack of data for process level or use phase assessments despite these being responsible for a significant share of the total environmental impact. This lack of data is even further exacerbated for unconventional machining (UCM) - unit process Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data for UCM processes has particularly limited records in LCI databases. Electrical discharge machining (EDM), which is the most widely used UCM process, is reported as much less energy efficient compared to conventional machining processes. In addition to that, EDM produces wastes in solid, liquid, gas and aerosol form increasing its environmental footprint. The purpose of this study is to ascertain LCI data for EDM processes and thus to facilitate improved life cycle assessment during the use phase. The study takes insights of CO2PE!-methodology, a systematic inventory analysis of the use phase of manufacturing unit processes. Case studies are carried out with an industrial die and mould manufacturer. The resultant data for die sinking and wire EDM is then compared with publicly available data. Challenges of generalising LCI data are discussed with future improvement potentials.
