The effectiveness of catch and release as a conservation practice assumes minimal impacts to released fish. In most cases, angling‐related stressors can be mitigated via changes to angler behavior that reduce fight duration, handling, and air exposure. In some cases, stressors may significantly impact the ability of fish to engage in normal swimming behavior upon release. In these scenarios, it may be beneficial for anglers to assist recovery or retain fish until they are adequately recovered. We investigated the effectiveness of two assisted‐recovery devices at facilitating behavioral recovery in angled Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss: (1) retention in a flow box, or (2) retention in a water‐filled cooler. Additionally, we compared the effects of assisted recovery in surface water (24–27°C) or cool water pumped from the hypolimnion (17–19°C). From July to mid‐September 2020, 169 fish were angled from five stocked lakes at Kenauk Nature (Montebello, Quebec). Fish were air exposed for 30 s, for 15 s, or not at all (0 s) and were held in a flow box or a water‐filled cooler for 3 min, while fish in a control group were immediately released. Triaxial acceleration and temperature biologgers were temporarily fixed around the trunk of the fish with Velcro to observe postrelease swimming behavior for 10 min. Rainbow Trout that were held in assisted‐recovery devices regained equilibrium significantly more quickly than those that were immediately released, and fish that were held in 17–19°C water regained equilibrium the most rapidly. In fish that were air exposed for 30 s, individuals that were held in recovery devices exhibited greater swimming activity compared to those that were immediately released. Our study demonstrates that for Rainbow Trout, assisted‐recovery devices can reduce equilibrium impairment, especially when water in the recovery devices is significantly cooler than the relatively warm surface water temperature. Global water temperatures are expected to rise as a result of anthropogenic climate change, and best practices for angling should be adapted to reflect increased thermal stressors for many game fish species. Ensuring that fish are vigorous upon release is imperative for reducing postrelease mortality caused by predation or thermal stress.

Black bass fishing tournaments with conventional weigh‐ins tend to displace fish from their capture site and often release fish within close proximity to the weigh‐in site. Tournaments often include Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoidesand Smallmouth Bass M. dolomieuand occur throughout fishing seasons; however, there have yet to be any systematic congeneric comparisons across different seasons. Objectives of our study were to (1) assess post‐tournament dispersal of Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth Bass (i.e., short‐term stockpiling—accumulation of fish around weigh‐in site <1 month after tournament) across seasons, and (2) determine the success of return to the main basin. Research took place on Big Rideau Lake in eastern Ontario and included a preseason control (N= 30) where fish were captured, acoustically tagged, and released at the site of tournament weigh‐in (Rideau Ferry). Tournament‐caught bass (N= 88 total) were tagged at three tournaments that spanned June (early season), August (midseason), and October (late season). Our results indicated a brief short‐term stockpiling (within 300 m) in all seasons, and all detected fish eventually returned to the main basin. Tournament‐caught Largemouth Bass tended to take longer to disperse from the release site following the midseason tournament (4.6 d); Smallmouth Bass tended to disperse from release site <1 d following all treatments. Similarly, tournament‐caught Largemouth Bass exposed to the midseason tournament tended to take the longest to redistribute to the main basin (238 d) in comparison to other treatments. Although Smallmouth Bass tended to redistribute to the main basin faster than Largemouth Bass, late‐season Smallmouth Bass tended to redistribute the slowest (101 d) following tournament release. Although fish do survive and eventually return to the main basin, displacement may have broader ecological consequences (i.e., large‐scale displacement of top predators, adverse effects on recruitment) such that there would be merit in more catch–weigh–release formatted events.

In recreational fisheries it is understood that individual fish that exhibit bolder personality traits have a tendency to be removed from the population (i.e., fishing mortality via harvest or catch‐and‐release mortality), while more timid individuals remain. The use of aquatic protected areas (APAs) has been promoted as a means of offsetting the negative consequences that are associated with fishing mortality by protecting the full suite of phenotypes. However, little work has investigated whether APAs are able to maintain heterogeneity in behavioral traits in wild fish. We attempted to address this question by using wild Bluegill Lepomis macrochirusfrom Lake Opinicon, a freshwater system consisting of both an APAand heavily fished areas. The Bluegill were obtained via angling from three zones in the lake: the main lake area (i.e., fished), the APA(which has been in place since the 1940s), and a transitional zone between these two areas. In the laboratory, the Bluegill were subjected to two behavioral assessments, a Z‐maze and a flight‐initiation‐distance (FID) test, to address differences in boldness and risk‐taking between these populations. No significant effects of capture zone were detected for any of the behavioral metrics that were assessed in the maze trial. However, individuals that originated from the main lake population had significantly higher FIDscores than the fish from the transitional zone and the APAdid, indicating that they were more timid. Our results suggest that fisheries activities may only be acting only on specific traits, which may explain some of the null results that are presented here. Nevertheless, our study provides evidence that APAs are providing a reservoir of less timid individuals, which is consistent with an evolutionarily enlightened management strategy.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios are of use to determine the origin of matter. Thermolysis is used to convert matter to H2and CO gases, which are the respective substrates for measurement of these two isotope ratios, using isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). This work was done in response to the need for analysis of small invasive insects, requiring a decrease in the limit of measurement for isotope ratiometry of hydrogen and oxygen, while determining both isotope ratios on the same sample. Miniaturization of a thermolysis reactor using commercially available components is presented that results in improvement in the limit of measurement for both hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios. δ2H was determined on 0.4 μg of H and δ18O determined on 5 μg of O with precisions of 3 mUr and 0.7 mUr, respectively. To extend the usable sample size range or increase the resolution of sampling gives obvious advantages in forensic and environmental sciences. The technique has been applied to determining the natural origin of Tephritidae fruit flies for which only the wing is suitable for analysis and provides just 60 μg of material for analysis.

An automated method is described for the determination of chloride in biological fluids using a mercuric 2,4,6-tri-(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine reagent. Results obtained by this method compared favourably with those obtained by coulometric titration. The same reagent was used manually to measure the small amounts of chloride in sweat. The results obtained agreed well with the direct measurement of chloride using an ion-specific electrode.
