1. Man as a Species.

Abstract

Written in 1964, the document represents experimental material of the Anthropology Curriculum Study Project. The objectives of the project were to discuss the evolution of man as distinguished from the evolution of other species and as related to culture, and to emphasize human diversity. Three brief essays are presented. The first, "The Species Concept," explains factors used to determine the classification of animals into species. The second essay, "Man As A Species," defines species as sexually producing organisms that actually or potentially interbreed and produce fertile offspring. The geographical factors of human variation are discussed. The third essay, "The Species, Man," summarizes the characteristics of man by describing anatomical function and comparing man's body with other living creatures. (KC)

2. A Curriculum Proposal for the Development of Maturity in Students.

Abstract

Development of the mature person is a necessary theme for educational design in contemporary society. A structured definition of the term "maturity" is needed which can be applied to the design of educational experience. The author suggests that there are six criteria of maturity: intelligence, responsiblity, articulation, empathy, sexuality, and philosophy. Students (and adults) must continually grow in these areas in order to properly develop their maturity. At the same time, the educational system must have goals to help students acquire and refine skills of fluency or literacy, analysis and evaluation, and persistence in solving problems of all kinds. In designing curriculum to effectively promote the development of maturity, educators must consider how any given subject area relates to the six criteria of maturity and the major educational goals. For example, how would the ability to analyze historical data contribute to the student's development of articulation? How would the disposition to use mathematics contribute to the student's development of intelligence? Curriculum development which thoroughly considers all aspects of the human condition will succeed in promoting maturity. (Author/AV)

3. Basic Issues in the Education of Prisoners.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify primarily educational issues which are basic to the practitioner or researcher in the area of correctional education. Three categories of issues are examined. Management issues are one category and includes those which involve administrative and supervisory duties. Building a platform (rationale, philosophy, or policy) is essential to developing a correctional education curriculum. Creating more difficulty in management than any other aspect are faulty communications. There are three basic types of communications: formal, functional, and non-formal. The complexity of the network and difference in language are the focus of this issue. The final management issue is goal-setting and evaluating the desirability of a goal as it relates to individual perceptions and roles. A second category is that of contextual issues, which includes perception of the educational program and the nature of learners and instructors. The final category of issues encompasses the basics in prison education, including fostering human development, establishing opportunities and necessities for responsibility, the self-concept, meaning and purpose to correctional education, and establishing a cultural alternative. 4. Making the Teacher/Advisor System Work. (Functions, Comparisons, Concepts).

Abstract

Responding to today's high school students' human needs as well as educational needs necessitates that the teacher return to serving as an adult friend during their school life. Administrators are helping to set the stage for facilitating learning how to learn, and teacher/advisors are drawing upon many aspects of their personality and human dynamics abilities to be more helpful to the student. Some specific functions of these new roles are: (1) the human development function; (2) the crisis assistance function; (3) the student-parent-teacher conference function; and (4) the program planning function. The role of the teacher/advisor is different from the role in traditional teaching, the focus being on experiential learning, personal expression, and critical thinking, rather than on traditional content learning. The teacher/advisory system relies heavily on the concept of student responsibility for their own learning and is a response to societal pressures on teachers and the roles they play in education. 5. Study Findings from Assam Update Knowledge in Human Development (Role of Public Health Expenditure on Health Infrastructure and Manpower in India: A State-Level Analysis of the Nexus Between Indicators).

A study conducted in Assam, India, analyzed the role of public health expenditure on health infrastructure and manpower in different Indian states from 2006 to 2020. The research found that economically advanced states like Haryana and Maharashtra had lower health indicators, while disadvantaged states like Odisha and Rajasthan performed better. Accurate clinical assessment is necessary for meaningful and ethical case conceptualization, treatment planning, intervention, and outcome assessment in mental health counseling. Without the tools to accurately screen for common, yet [...], This psychometric synthesis reviewed all 29 articles meeting criteria and possessing psychometric results from the 20-year history (1997 to 2017) of the Highly Sensitive Person Scale (HSPS). Aggregated internal consistency (coefficient alpha) was .874. Convergent comparisons were provided between the HSPS total score and 12 measures of constructs similar to the sensory processing sensitivity construct. Structural validity primarily supported both the original one- and three-factor models, as did the pattern of high intra-subscale and total scale correlations, hut a unidimensional interpretation is suggested given the low reliabilities for subscale scores. The HSPS performed adequately for a screening-level instrument. Mental health counselors are well suited to use the HSPS within their regular practice of assessing and valuing normal human development in addition to diagnosing and treating mental health disorders.

Abstract

Purpose This paper aims to understand and explore the causal relationship of elements responsible for the macro vicious cycle of poverty in Guinea-Bissau, and discuss policies to break it.Design/methodology/approach The methodology used in this study is based on the system dynamics simulation paradigm.Findings Breaking the Guinean poverty cycle requires a multifaceted approach involving more resources and the building of several national capabilities. Traditional approaches tend to fail.Research limitations/implications Limitations come from the level of abstraction used in the model, which does not detail the processes for building specific capabilities and their interrelationships, and the necessary exclusion of variables that may have an impact in the process. Considering implications, the study models the evolution of human development index (HDI) in Guinea-Bissau, linking it to the economy and political sectors and allowing the simulation of different scenarios.Practical implications The study presents a critical stance towards common recommendations from international agencies, and it provides a blueprint for development of more effective public policies.Social implications Overcoming the poverty trap in sub-Saharan countries remains a challenge for the international community. The study aims at helping in the process of integrating different frameworks into a compact and manageable model.Originality/value The study contributes to the system dynamics and economic development literatures by presenting an integrative model of human development in Guinea-Bissau. There is no study in the system dynamics literature modelling the relationship of HDI to economy and political sectors while different and contradictory points of view characterize the economics literature, leaving well-meaning public officials in Guinea-Bissau at a loss of mental models to tackle the poverty trap in the country.
