Infertility following a previous pregnancy may sometimes be caused by residual fetal bony tissue from a previous midtrimester abortion. Researchers used ultrasound examinations to detect bony fragments inside the uterus of 11 women with secondary infertility. All of the women had undergone an uneventful midtrimester abortion before they experienced infertility. Dilation and curettage (D&C) to remove the bony fragments revealed that they were from the aborted fetus. Three women required more than one D&C to remove all the bone fragments. Ten of the 11 women became pregnant and delivered infants after treatment.

The article focuses on the use of a near-real-time, field-deployable biosensor device in monitoring the spread of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), a disease affecting productivity in the swine industry. The biosensor consists of a miniaturized lab-on-a-chip (LOC), which combined with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to perform the detection of PRRS, as well as influenza A virus. The use of a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in swine disease detection is also considered.
