The doping of CeO2with trivalent cations is a common technique for enhancing ionic conductivity in electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cell applications. However, the local defect structure in these materials is yet to be fully explored. Furthermore, many studies have overlooked the effect of the dopants on the reducibility of CeO2, which is important as electronic conductivity can short-circuit the fuel cell. Density functional theory (DFT)+Ucalculations have been performed on a series of CeO2systems doped with trivalent cations. The most stable configuration and the relative attraction between dopant cations and oxygen vacancies were determined, and it was found that the defect structure is principally dependent on the ionic radius of the dopant cations. The reduction energy was found to be dependent on the structure around the dopants but did not vary significantly between dopants of similar ionic radii. From these results, it is possible to suggest which trivalent cations would be most suitable to enhance ionic conductivity without increasing electronic conductivity in solid oxide fuel cell electrolytes.

Lassa virus (LASV) is the most prevalent arenavirus afflicting humans and has high potential to become a threat to global public health. The transmembrane domain (TM) of the LASV glycoprotein complex forms critical interactions with the LASV stable signal peptide that are important for the maturation and fusion activity of the virus. A further study of the structure-based molecular mechanisms is required to understand the role of the TM in the lifecycle of LASV in greater detail. However, it is challenging to obtain the TM in high quantity and purity due to its hydrophobic nature which results in solubility issues that makes it prone to aggregation in typical buffer systems. Here, we designed a purification and detergent screen protocol for the highly insoluble TM to enhance the yield and purity for structural studies. Based on the detergents tested, the TM had the highest incorporation in LMPG. Circular dichroism (CD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were utilized to confirm the best detergent system for structural studies. Through CD spectroscopy, we were able to characterize the secondary structure of the TM as largely alpha-helical, while NMR spectroscopy showed a well-structured and stable TM in LMPG. From these results, LMPG was determined to be the optimal detergent for further structural studies.

Background:Concussions represent 8.9% to 13.2% of all high school athletic injuries. How these injuries are managed is currently unknown.Hypothesis:There are differences in concussion management and awareness among boys football, boys ice hockey, and boys and girls soccer.Study Design:Descriptive epidemiologic study.Methods:High school athletic directors were contacted via e-mail and asked to complete, and request that their staff complete, an online survey with 4 sections aimed at athletic directors, head coaches, team physicians, and certified athletic trainers.Results:According to coaches, concussion awareness education was provided for football (97%), hockey (65%), and boys and girls soccer (57% and 47%, respectively) (P < 0.01). Use of sideline screening tools was significantly greater for football (P = 0.03). All participants agreed that a player who has suffered a concussion cannot return to play the same day.Conclusion:There is a difference in concussion management and awareness among the 4 sports. Concussion education is well promoted in football but should be expanded in soccer and hockey. Players are not allowed to return to play the same day, and the majority are referred to a physician.Clinical Relevance:Study results highlight the differences in concussion education among sports. Health care providers should address these gaps.

We have investigated the formation of intrinsic defects in CeO2using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) corrected for on-site Coulombic interactions (GGA+U). We employed an ab initio fitting procedure to determine a U{O2p} value that satisfies a Koopmans-like condition and obtained a value of U{O2p} = 5.5 eV. We subsequently demonstrated that by applying GGA+Uto the O2pstates, in addition to the Ce4fstates, we were able to model localized holes in addition to localized electrons, thus improving the description of p-type defects in CeO2. Our results show that under oxygen-poor conditions the defects with the lowest formation energy are oxygen vacancies, while oxygen interstitials, which form peroxide ions, will be more favorable under oxygen-rich conditions. We carried out temperature and pressure dependence analyses to determine the relative abundance of intrinsic defects under real-world conditions and determined that oxygen vacancies will always be the dominant defect. Furthermore, we determined that at the dilute limit none of the defects studied can account for the intrinsic ferromagnetism that has been observed in nanosized CeO2.

This study investigated the relationship between human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV‐16) antibodies detected in oral fluid from women with cervical neoplasia, their HPV‐16 antibody seroprevalence, and their cervical HPV‐16 DNA presence. Cervical HPV‐16 DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction in 43.2% (35/81) of these women. The prevalence of IgG and IgA antibodies to HPV‐16 virus‐like particles (VLP‐16) in oral fluid and was investigated by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Anti‐VLP‐16 IgA antibodies were detected in oral fluid from 54.3% (44/81) of women with cervical neoplasia, compared with 8% (3/36) in controls (P= 0.000002). Anti‐VLP‐16 IgG was detected in oral fluid from 43.2.9% (25/72) and 13.3% (4/30; P= 0.029), respectively. Women who were HPV‐16 DNA positive at their cervical lesion, displayed an oral fluid anti‐VLP‐16 IgA prevalence of 60.7% (17/28) and HPV‐16 DNA negative women an oral fluid anti‐VLP‐16 IgA prevalence of 50% (20/40; P= 0.38). Oral fluid anti‐VLP‐16 IgG prevalence in HPV‐16 DNA positive women was 28.6% (8/28) compared with 40% (16/40) in oral fluid from HPV‐16 DNA negative women (P= 0.3). Amongst HPV‐16 DNA positive women, the anti‐VLP‐16 IgG seroprevalence was 75% (21/28) and IgA seroprevalence 35.7% (10/28) and for the HPV‐16 DNA negative women these values were 60% (24/40) and 32.5% (13/40), respectively. Oral IgA antibody testing proved no more sensitive than serum antibody detection for the determination of HPV infection but could be useful as a non‐invasive screening method for women with cervical neoplasia and for estimating the mucosal antibody response to HPV vaccines.
