In an era of digital transformation, where data is often referred to as the ‘new oil’ of business, with data privacy and cybersecurity incidents recurrently making the headlines, international business (IB) scholars are increasingly grappling with the challenges posed by disparate data governance regulations. Recognizing the growing importance of this topic for IB research and policymaking, our paper seeks to offer a comprehensive examination of cross-country regulatory intricacies of data governance, frequently described by IB scholars as ‘complex’ and ‘pluralistic’ institutional contexts. This allows us to explore the various implications of diverse data governance regulations on international business, thus laying the groundwork for rigorous IB policy studies in this area. As a preliminary finding, we highlight a greater need for international cooperation, where both policymakers and multinational enterprises play a pivotal role. Using the EU data governance framework as an illustrative example, we structure our discussion around four policy areas of data governance: data use; data transfers; data storage; and data flows. We aim for this categorization to serve as a foundational basis for future IB research, aiding in tackling one of the most pressing digital challenges of this day and age: reconciling data privacy and security with data-driven innovation.

After analyzing if 50 leading multinationals follow the universal ethical norms (related to exportive HRM) or relativist ethical norms (related to adaptive HRM and multidomestic strategies). Though some multinationals follow the universal ethical norms, managing the ethical dilemmas shown in case material and strategic trade-offs are outlined.

The growth of peer‐to‐peer sharing is crucially dependent on continued participation of current platform members and on them behaving prosocially towards other participants who are usually strangers. We propose a relational‐models view that revolves around the idea that how members perceive the relationships among participants on a sharing platform significantly affects these behavioural outcomes. We test this idea with a survey where we capture participants’ perceptions of sharing relationships using Fiske’s (1991) relational models ‒ communal sharing, market pricing, and equality matching. We show that communal sharing and equality matching foster prosocial behaviour (which we label sharing citizenship behaviour) and the willingness to continue participating, whereas market pricing does not have the negative effects we expected. Our work advances relational models theory in addition to contributing to the literature on the sharing economy.

Multinational firms included in the Financial Times Global 500 list were surveyed about the types of political activities they undertake regarding the issue of climate change. Types of political action, strategy, and targets of such activities by the firms are reported.

Recent years have seen growing interest in a leading role for cities in addressing major environmental sustainability challenges including cleaner air and water. While geographers have long studied urban governance responses, international business (IB) scholars have embraced city-level analyses only in the past decade, primarily to examine multinationals’ location strategies. Thus far, IB has not studied cities’ environmental sustainability in relation to foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows. Our paper does so by analyzing whether it ‘pays’ to be green for cities in attracting FDI inflows, using a comprehensive sample of Chinese cities of different sizes over a 7-year period comprising 918 city-year observations. A fixed-effects panel data estimation shows that it indeed pays for cities to be green, specifically considering air quality and waste water treatment, two key locational factors exposing different mechanisms. Implications for green urban and business policies and for IB research are discussed.

This article examines the role of multinationals and international business in poverty alleviation, based on an analysis of articles in the top journals in business, economics, and policy. We develop a conceptual cross-disciplinary framework that maps and disentangles the impact of different types of international business activities on five dimensions of poverty, moderated by country and industry effects. While our study suggests that the impact of all the types of business activities on poverty is still unclear overall, we contribute to research and policy debates by identifying key insights from and main gaps in this cross-disciplinary stream of literature. A distinction is made between firm effects as part of both ‘mainstream’ and ‘responsible’ globalization, and firm-specific activities with and without the explicit goal of poverty alleviation, considering investment and trade. We propose areas for further research based on the framework, including the importance of interaction effects and contextual factors.

Confronted with public concerns about health and obesity, food companies are taking several initiatives. However, it is unclear to what extent they should communicate these policies. This article explores reactions in the blogosphere to health-related announcements by large food companies. Results show that taste-related announcements generate not only more reactions, but also more positive buzz than knowledge-related announcements. Valence is influenced by issue association per company type: those with highest obesity associations generate more negative blog posts. In case of low issue association, there are only limited blogosphere reactions. This analysis has important implications for managing interaction with social media.

Regulatory uncertainty has been inherent in climate change policy due to the absence of a successor to the Kyoto Protocol. Many companies have called for more certainty and a stable policy framework. However, besides having clear disadvantages, regulatory uncertainty may also benefit some companies if they recognize the opportunities of flux and move early. This article explores business opportunities that have emerged for different types of companies, including utilities, banks, project development & carbon offset companies, brokers, exchanges, consultants, auditors and legal services providers with respect to clean development projects and the related carbon market.
