2. Winding Factor of Vernier Permanent Magnet Motor

Abstract

Several studies have been reported on vernier permanent magnet synchronous motors (VPMSMs) using spatial harmonics in air-gap flux density owing to their low-speed high-torque characteristics. However, coefficients that can predict the performance of VPMSMs in motor design processes have not been extensively researched. The gear ratio indicates the degree of amplification of the spatial harmonics, but there is a big difference between the performances predicted using the gear ratio and the actual performance of VPMSMs. The winding factor can estimate the magnitude of the electromotive force (EMF) of the motor. Although the winding factor is suitable for conventional motors, it cannot be applied to VPMSM, which amplifies EMF through spatial harmonics. In this study, we investigated the winding factor of VPMSMs and proposed a winding factor calculation method suitable for VPMSMs. Based on the analytical method, the proposed calculation method could instantly and accurately estimate the winding factor of VPMSMs. With this method, the EMF performance of VPMSMs can be predicted according to the pole–slot combination. To verify the validity of the proposed method, we compared the gear ratio, the proposed winding factor, and the magnitude of the EMF obtained by the finite element method.

5. Actuarial Applications of a Statistical Model for Long-Term Care Insurance Operated with a Score-based Grading System: A Case Study of Korean Long-Term Care Insurance (K-LTCI)

Abstract

Long-term care insurance plays a very important role as providing a protection against financial risk of an individual when he/she becomes in a health condition incurring significant costs for long-term care. Construction of an appropriate actuarial model for long-term care is an integral part of maintaining and improving a long-term care insurance system. A model is suggested for analyzing the impact of change in score-based long-term care grading system and for estimating future cost of long-term care insurance. A spliced distribution was used to model assigned scores for long-term care insurance in Korea based on experience data. The suggested approach is quite flexible, as it allows us to adapt to possible changes in the grading system.

6. Consideration of Marital Status in a Mortality Model and its Application for Mortality Risk Management

Abstract

As a variety of mortality risk factors have been identified by previous studies, it is desirable that these factors are reflected in mortality (longevity) risk assessments for life insurance, individual annuities, and pension plans. In this study, an extended traditional mortality table that accommodates marital status, which is one of the important risk factors in terms of mortality, is considered. A logistic regression method is used to model the mortality of groups of people with four different marital statuses–never married, married, widowed, and divorced. The analyses are based on data regarding mortality and changes of marital status in Korea. The results of the analyses that are based on the developed mortality model suggest that the information on risk factors must be reflected in an actuarial model to improve the evaluations and monitoring of risk for the portfolios of relevant insurance products.

7. On the Bayesian Risk Evaluation of Minimum Guarantees in Variable Annuities

Abstract

Long-term equity return models have a substantial impact on calculating reserves and capital requirements for minimum guarantees in variable annuities (VAs). Under a Bayesian statistical framework, we reinvestigate the standard long-term equity return models (independent lognormal, regime-switching lognormal and stochastic log volatility models) with the Korean equity market data. Our empirical analysis shows that the long-term behaviors of the Korean market are best described by the regime-switching lognormal models, and there can be significant difference in the amount of the reserves and the capital requirements depending on the model selection. The long-term nature of the VA contracts requires that more caution be paid for modeling the mean part of the stochastic log volatility model.

9. Optimized production of lignolytic manganese peroxidase in immobilized cultures of Phanerochaete chrysosporium

Abstract

Abstract: Manganese peroxidase (MnP) is a key enzyme involved in the lignolysis of white-rot fungi. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of immobilization and culture conditions on MnP production in cultures of Phanerochaete chrysosporium grown on polyurethane foam. Higher concentrations of foam and lower levels of spore inoculums resulted in the formation of scattered mycelial pellets, increased autolysis of chlamydospore-like cells (a reservoir of MnP), and a higher activity of MnP. Even though MnP was a secondary metabolite, the addition of 5 times more glucose and diammonium tartrate, as carbon and nitrogen sources, resulted in a 4 fold increase in the dry cell mass. However, MnP activity decreased under these conditions to less than half, due to the formation of increasingly dense pellets and the inhibited lysis of chlamydospore-like cells.

Abstract

AbstractThese days aging population is a common phenomenon in most countries in the world. As a result, many countries are making great effort to improve the quality of life of elderly people after retirement. A long-term care insurance system is one of the products of those efforts. In the middle of year 2008, long term care insurance as a form of social insurance was introduced in Korea and has been providing various services for people who need assistance with daily living activities. A myriad of opinions from various perspectives such as finance and quality have been suggested for improvement of the system. In order to resolve problems and to reflect suggestions for the purpose of developing the system, the future demand and cost needs to be carefully estimated. Also, various important decisions associated with the insurance policy should be based on the results of the projection. This paper provides a case study of public long-term care insurance in Korea and discusses methods to make projections on the future costs of long-term care insurance.
