Revisions to the TNM stage classifications for lung cancer, informed by the international database (N = 94,708) of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee, need external validation. The objective was to externally validate the revisions by using the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) of the American College of Surgeons.

Abstract

Stage classification provides a consistent language to describe the anatomic extent of disease and is therefore a critical tool in caring for patients. The Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer developed proposals for revision of the classification of lung cancer for the eighth edition of the tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) classification, which takes effect in 2017.

Abstract

In this paper we have analyzed different factors that affect the subject “Prevention and Safety I” evaluation, within the Building Degree from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and its influence in its students’ learning, in order to establish guidelines for improvement in the evaluation. This paper reflects the influence in the evaluation of the base the students already have, the student's perception of the evaluation and the kind of evaluation made. With the results obtained, we have reviewed the teaching planning for the next year, in order to improve the learning objectives fulfilment.

The article discusses a study on the proposed organization diagnosis metaphor by an allopathic physician, which could contribute to the qualification of healthy organization. The study shows the methodology on homo- and isomorphism behavior of a person observed by a physician. Result shows that the value and power of metaphors have been recognized and understands the organizational phenomenon including the definition of the World Health Organization.

Abstract

The security of two public key encryption schemes relying on the hardness of different computational problems in non-abelian groups is investigated. First, an attack on a conceptual public key scheme based on Grigorchuk groups is presented. We show that from the public data one can easily derive an “equivalent” secret key that allows the decryption of arbitrary messages encrypted under the public key. Hereafter, a security problem in another conceptual public key scheme based on non-abelian groups is pointed out. We show that in the present form the BMW scheme is vulnerable to an attack, which can recover large parts of the private subgroup chain from the public key.

25. Kinetic of epoxy resin formation by high-performance liquid chromatography

Abstract

This article is focused on the following of the cure of an epoxy resin by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the comparison of the data obtained with those obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) techniques usually employed for characterize curing processes. A reversed-phase HPLC method with UV detection is developed to study the kinetic of the curing reaction of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with 1,3-cyclohexanebismethylamine (1,3-BAC) at 60, 70, and 80°C, before and after gelation. The limits of quantification obtained permit the application of the proposed method until the last steps of the formation kinetic. HPLC and DSC analysis show a good correlation. 27. Polarographic Determination of Aztreonam

Abstract

The polarographic behaviour of Aztreonam is studied. In acid media, at pH values lower than 6, in differential pulse polarography a peak is observed at a potential close to - 0.6 volts. The optimum conditions for the polarographic signal are established and the different parameters affecting the electrochemical process are studied. The relationship between peak intensity and the concentration of Aztreonam is linear for concentrations lower than 1.0 - 10-5 M, the detection limit being 1.4 × 10-8 M It was observed that the presence of 1-arginine does not affect the polarographic signal of Aztreonam to any significant extent.

Abstract

Introduction. In a degenerative disorder such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), it is important to establish clinical stages that allow to know the course of the disease. Our aim was to analyze whether a scale combining Hoehn and Yahr’s motor stage (H&Y) and the nonmotor symptoms burden (NMSB) (assessed by the nonmotor symptoms scale (NMSS)) provides information about the disability and the patient’s quality of life (QoL) with regard to a defined clinical stage. Materials and Methods. Cross-sectional study in which 603 PD patients from the COPPADIS cohort were classified according to H&Y (1, stage I; 2, stage II; 3, stage III; 4, stage IV/V) and NMSB (A: NMSS = 0–20; B: NMSS = 21–40; C: NMSS = 41–70; D: NMSS ≥ 71) in 16 stages (HY.NMSB, from 1A to 4D). QoL was assessed with the PDQ-39SI, PQ-10, and EUROHIS-QOL8 and disability with the Schwab&England ADL (Activities of Daily Living) scale. Results. A worse QoL and greater disability were observed at a higher stage of H&Y and NMSB (p<0.0001). Combining both (HY.NMSB), patients in stages 1C and 1D and 2C and 2D had significantly worse QoL and/or less autonomy for ADL than those in stages 2A and 2B and 3A and 3B, respectively (p<0.005; e.g., PDQ-39SI in 1D [n = 15] vs 2A [n = 101]: 28.6 ± 17.1 vs 7.9 ± 5.8; p<0.0001). Conclusion. The HY.NMSB scale is simple and reflects the degree of patient involvement more accurately than the H&Y. Patients with a lower H&Y stage may be more affected if they have a greater NMS burden.

Se estudia el caso de oftalmoplejía externa bilateral en un paciente epiléptico de 50 años después de la administración del fármaco antiepiléptico fenitoína. Se explica que la adducción del ojo izquierdo con parálisis para la adducción de manera bilateral que apareció con la administración del fármaco desapareció después de la terminación del tratamiento.

Abstract

IN REPLY.— In any study about xanthelasmas, patient selection is of utmost importance. Pintó and coworkers do not explain the origin of their patients, and some of the differences encountered in their study could be due to a different selected population.Further data not included in our article revealed that, among first-degree relatives of our 50 patients with xanthelasma, only two had cardiovascular disease.We did compare our patients with xanthelasmas with a normal control population chosen so that the controls contained approximately equal numbers of subjects of the same age, sex, and weight. The group of patients with xanthelasmas (40% of them hyperlipemic) showed higher levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, very-low-density cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol than the control group. However, the levels of apoprotein B were equal, and the levels of phospholipids were higher when we compared the group of xanthelasmas with a nonselected population (Table).1 The hyperlipemic phenotypes among the two groups were almost similar, and the hyperlipemia
