In individuals with borderline von Willebrand factor (VWF) plasma levels, second‐level tests are required to confirm or exclude von Willebrand disease (VWD). These tests are time‐consuming and expensive.

We have recently implemented radial phase-contrast techniques that allow high resolution angiograms with velocity information to be acquired within clinically-useful imaging times. 10 healthy volunteers were scanned using PC-VIPR and PC-SOS, two high resolution phase-contrast techniques at spatial resolutions of 0.67×0.67×0.67 mm3and 0.4×0.4×1 mm3respectively. The velocity measurements from the two acquisitions were imported into a custom Matlab runtime environment that automatically calculated WSS values using Green's Theorem and B-spline interpolation. Time average axial WSS was 1.069 N/m2(95% confidence interval: 0.8628< × < 1.276) in the left and right middle cerebral arteries of the 10 healthy volunteers (n=20) when scanned by PC-VIPR, and 1.670 N/m2when scanned by PC-SOS (95% confidence interval: 1.395 < × < 1.946). This difference in means was statistically significant (p < 0.002). Previous investigators have found that higher spatial resolution results in higher WSS measurements because smaller voxel size results in fewer partial volume effects. This was true in our study as well. In this study, we found that PC-SOS has significantly higher spatial resolution than PC-VIPR and this followed in the WSS measurements. Higher in-plane spatial resolution allows WSS calculations to be performed more accurately because of increased precision near the vessel boundary.

Capillary optic arrays are bundles of hollow glass capillaries which guide x rays in a manner similar to the way fiber optics guide light. Focused postpatient capillary optic arrays have the potential to significantly improve both contrast and resolution of mammographic images compared to conventional antiscatter grids. Contrast can be improved by the nearly total scatter rejection of the optic. Effective resolution can be improved by geometric magnification without increased focal spot blurring. The best results were found for borosilicate glasses, with transmissions in excess of 60% for 22‐cm‐long fibers. To evaluate the scatter rejection properties, the transmission of off‐axis radiation was measured. Transmission drops to <1% at an angular displacement of 2.7 mrad. Transmission of a bulk capillary array dropped to near zero if the source was at an angle of 2.5 mrad. This implies excellent scatter rejection capabilities. To evaluate whether unchanneled photons might still reach the detector, absorption measurements were also performed on fibers and arrays. Absorption was found to be adequate for scatter rejection. All of the data agreed well with numerical simulations. Performance calculations for two potential optics geometries gave promising results.

Extracellular responses from neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) were studied in rats aged 5 days to adulthood during chemical stimulation of the tongue with monochloride salts, citric and hydrochloric acids, sucrose, sodium saccharin, and quinine hydrochloride. Multiunit taste responses were recorded in rats at 5-7 days of age and single-unit responses were recorded from 111 neurons in four other age groups of 14-20 days, 25-35 days, 50-60 days, and adult. NST neurons in rats aged 5-7 days consistently responded to relatively high concentrations (0.5 M) of NH4Cl and KCl and to citric and hydrochloric acid. However, they often did not respond to 0.5 M NaCl or to 0.1 M NH4Cl. Single NST neurons in rats aged 14 days and older characteristically responded to all 0.1 and 0.5 M salts and to both acids. At least 75% of neurons also responded to sucrose and sodium saccharin, and 46% responded to all of these stimuli and quinine hydrochloride. After 14 days, no developmental changes occurred in the number of stimuli to which neurons responded. There were substantial developmental alterations in the response magnitudes to some chemical stimuli. Average response frequencies increased after 35 days of age for 0.1 and 0.5 M NaCl, LiCl, KCl, and for sucrose and sodium saccharin. Response frequencies for NH4Cl, citric and hydrochloric acid, and quinine hydrochloride, however, did not change throughout development. The proportion of single NST neurons that responded maximally to specific monochloride salts did not change during development. Most single neurons in all age groups responded equally well to NH4Cl, NaCl, and LiCl. No NST neuron responded maximally to KCl. There were also no developmental differences in response latencies in rats aged 14 days and older. Response frequencies of second-order NST neurons generally reflect changes in responses from the primary afferent, chorda tympani fibers, throughout development; however, the increases in salt response frequencies from NST neurons occur comparatively later in development. Furthermore, at all ages, the taste responses to monochloride salts include higher response frequencies and a general loss in response specificity in NST compared to chorda tympani neurons.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

A new technique has been developed for imaging small concentrations of elements having K absorption edges in the diagnostic x-ray energy range. Highly sensitive video image subtraction apparatus is used to take the difference between images formed by x-ray spectra peaked above and below the absorption edge. All portions of the image field are detected simultaneously using a conventional image intensifier, eliminating the need for scanning the x-ray defector. Quasi-monoenergetic x-rays are obtained by filtering conventional fluoroscopic x-ray beams. Compared with other methods the technique could lead to a low cost system offering a large reduction in imaging time, with resolution comparable to conventional image intensified fluoroscopy. The results of tests involving periodic images generated electrically or by periodic insertion of x-ray absorbers are presented to illustrate the properties of the imaging electronics. The feasibility of the technique is demonstrated by images of phantoms containing small concentrations of iodine and xenon.
