Background: The social and human sciences have enormously contributed to the study of health and well being of populations as well as to the risk factors and individual resilience that are associated to them. Thus, it is a general thought that one of the main functions of health professionals is to promote healthy behaviours in people. Aim: To verify if some psychological characteristics (Self-Esteem, Locus of Control, Internal Sense of Coherence) are associated to health(lifestyle, health state, general health perception) in higher education students. Method: The sample was made up by 548 students, men and women, who were attending Nursing School (n= 322) and other graduations without any health studies- Management, Languages, Secretarial and Administration (n=226). The protocol included: Inventory “My Lifestyle” Scale “State of Health”; To measure psychological variables: Sense of Coerence Questionnaire; Self-Esteem Clinical Inventory; Self-Esteem Physical Inventory; and Locus of Control Questionnaire. Results: There is an association, statistically significant between health variables and psychological variables, in the expected sense. Also, the results suggest that the Internal Sense of Coherence factors - understanding(ß= .336) and generalised significance(ß= .294)- are, in interaction with General Health Perception, predictors in a positive and highly significant way, for Health State, specifically in Nursing School Students. Conclusion: We believe this study points to a growing need of a bigger participation of psychologists (along with other health professionals) in the development of programs related to public health. Apart from an involvement in primary health care it will also be important for these professionals to participate in differentiated care.

Introduction: The practice of active citizenship, ethical-moral courses of action and civic, moral and ethics education are essentials for ethical decision making in health. Objetive: To determine if gender influences students’ ethical- moral course of action. Methods: Descriptive study with a non-probabilistic sample of 85 students enrolled in the 1st cycle of the health degree. Results: Of the participants surveyed 61.2% were found to say that action should take into account their moral principles, with ethical/ moral subjectivism prevailing; 44.7% consider that one should “Do what will have the best consequences for the greatest number of people”, with the principle of utilitarianism being significant; 55.3% think that “An action is ethically good” if “It is in accordance with morality”, thereby highlighting subjectivism/relativism; 45.9% believe that “ethical-moral values” “are relative and vary from society to society” agreeing with relativism as an explanatory principle for action. Males showed a greater tendency to support their decision-making with the principle of objectivism, (Fischer=.010). Conclusion: The results suggest that students’ ethical-moral education is required to promote an ethical-moral course of action in their professional practice. Thus, universities with their health courses should be at the forefront of this education, making their graduates ambassadors/interveners of a way of knowing and of being as well as promoters of the dignity of the citizen of the modern world.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, inflammatory, chronic, potentially disabling, neurological disease which is very common in young adults. It is of unknown origin there is no available curative treatment as of yet. Consequently, studying the quality of life (QOL) of people with MS people is an important aspect in assessing the impact of the disease on their daily lives. Through a cross-sectional, quantitative study, we enquired a random sample of 54 Portuguese MS patients, mostly female (61.1%), married (72.2%), aged between 20 and 67 years (M=42.11; SD=11.728), employed (37.0%), in which the mean age at onset was 33 years. The following are the measurement instruments used: the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life scale (MSQoL-54) (Vickrey, Hays, Harooni, Myers & Ellison, 1995), Portuguese version by Pedro and Pais-Ribeiro (2008); the Barthel Index (Mayoney FI & Barthel DW, 1965), Portuguese version by Araujo, Pais-Ribeiro, Oliveira and Pinto (2007); the Stress Vulnerability Scale (23QVS) (Vaz Serra, 2000) and the Social Support Scale (SSS) (Ferreira & Matos, 2000). The variables that showed a statistically significant effect on QOL were: age group, employment status, job satisfaction, age at onset of disease, associated diseases, sequelae of the disease, rehabilitation programme, degree of dependency/functional capacity, vulnerability to stress and social support. We believe that all who deal daily with people with this condition need to enter this subjective world where it becomes imperative to identify issues and needs not flagged by health professionals, but perceived by sufferers.

There are very few studies of mentally disabled adolescents and their parents in the field of quality of life which reinforces the need for further investigations. The aim of this study is to identify the determinant variables of quality of life perception evidenced not only by adolescents with mental disability, but also their parents/guardians.

The impact of the diagnosis in parents causes the cycle of family life will change profoundly, with serious disturbances in the reorganization and adjustments to this new reality. The objectives of the study aim to evaluate the quality of life of children/adolescent siblings of people with autism; to know the perception/opinion of the brothers on the impact that autism has had on family and check what kind of association between sociodemographic variables and of opinion on the impact of autism on the family and the QOL of participants. This is a study of the quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive correlational where 96 parents with autistic children participated kind. Data were collected through a questionnaire and a scale to assess the impact of the diagnosis of autism. The data show that on average the impact of the diagnosis of autism in parents showed moderate. Parents, mostly not yet managed to overcome the initial shock and showa great concern for the future of their children. The adjustments and changes made to the social level are dimensions where parents have lower difficulties. The data show that the impact of the diagnosis of autism in parents participating in the study was quite variable, depending on different variables, reinforcing the importance of continuity of studies on this topic in order to mitigate this impact.

An Henbest reduction, followed by the preparation of a silyl enol ether and oxidation in situwith m-CPBA has led to the neurosteroids 3α-hydroxy- and 3α,21-dihydroxy-5α-pregnanolones. Using testosterone as starting material, a new short synthesis of an aromatase inhibitor, 4-OHA, has been achieved through hydroboration/oxidation followed by a Swern type oxidation and epimerization. Another aromatase inhibitor, androst-4-ene-3,6-17-trione, has been efficiently prepared using PCC on montmorillonite K10, under ultrasonic irradiation.

21-Hydroxylation and acetoxylation of 20-oxosteroids, either α,β-unsaturated or β-substituted, were successfully achieved through oxidation of the corresponding silyl enol ethers withm-CPBA followed by smooth hydrolytic cleavage of the 21-alkylsilyloxy derivatives. These conditions, which have not been previously used to synthesize such compounds, allow a high degree of regio and chemoselectivity and are specially useful for the chemical synthesis of 16α,21-dihydroxy-20-oxosteroids.

We show that the s-spaces of Carlson and Sa´, with a few natural axioms added, are rich enough to develop unified abstract versions of theorems leading to very general families of inequalities involving eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices, singular values of products of complex matrices, and invariant factors of products of matrices over principal-ideal domains.
