•A novel VPP 3D printing method with microencapsulated PCM for thermal storage.•MEPCM addresses leakage risks, improving VPP 3D printing of functional composites.•Thermal and rheological properties analyzed for varying MEPCM-resin compositions.•Viscosity influences printability: ABS-like resin holds up to 40 wt% MEPCM.•40 wt% MEPCM composite showed 54.12 kJ/kg fusion heat and 12.4 % lower conductivity.
