The Stroke Treatment Academic Industry Roundtable XII included a workshop to discuss the most promising approaches to improve outcome from acute stroke. The workshop brought together representatives from academia, industry, and government representatives. The discussion examined approaches in 4 epochs: pre-reperfusion, reperfusion, post-reperfusion, and access to acute stroke interventions. The participants identified areas of priority for developing new and existing treatments and approaches to improve stroke outcomes. Although many advances in acute stroke therapy have been achieved, more work is necessary for reperfusion therapies to benefit the most possible patients. Prioritization of promising approaches should help guide the use of resources and investigator efforts.

The disposal of tons of organic chemicals annually in water resources is an alarming threat to the environment. Among the various remediation techniques, the combination of adsorption and degradation is a highly effective and economical strategy for eliminating these contaminants. In this study, a novel LaxNiyMn2-(x+y)O3/g-C3N4composite [x,y = (0.00,0.00), (0.03,0.06), (0.06,0.03), (0.045,0.045)] is synthesized by a low-temperature and cost-efficient sol-gel auto-combustion method to address this issue. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the morphology and crystal structure of the composite, respectively. The optical properties of the composite were investigated by a UV–visible spectrophotometer. The photocatalytic performance of the prepared samples was evaluated against crystal violet and 4-nitrophenol under solar irradiation. The doped composite La0.06Ni0.03Mn1.91O3/g-C3N4exhibited superior degradation efficiency of 87.54 % for crystal violet in 60 min, compared to 56.2 % for the undoped composite. The same composite also achieved 78 % reduction of 4-nitrophenol without any external reducing agent. Furthermore, adsorption isotherms models and statistical analysis were applied to the composite to elucidate the adsorption mechanism and the optimal conditions. The results demonstrated that the composite is an excellent candidate for environmental remediation due to its remarkable degradation and adsorption capabilities against organic pollutants.

The rising energy density and widespread use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) pose a growing safety challenge, marked by the potential for fires and explosions. Given the unique combustion characteristics of LIBs, the need for efficient and prompt fire suppression is paramount. Here we explore the mechanisms and characteristics of LIBs fires, emphasizing the critical design principles for effective fire-extinguishing agents and evaluating various agents, including gaseous, dry powders, water-based, aerosol-based, and composite-based fire-extinguishing agents, elucidating their mechanisms and effectiveness in suppressing LIBs fires. Noteworthy agents such as C6F12O and water-based solutions are highlighted for their superior extinguishing and cooling capabilities. Water-based fire-extinguishing agents show promise, exhibiting superior cooling capacity and anti-flash properties. Despite certain limitations, the review underscores the necessity of identifying an ideal fire-extinguishing agent that is thermally conductive, electrically insulating, cost-effective, non-toxic, residue-free, and capable of absorbing toxic gases. We conclude by discussing perspectives and outlooks, emphasizing the synergy between the ideal agent and innovative extinguishing strategies to ensure the high safety standards of current and future LIB-based technologies.

This study centered on exploring the adsorptive potential of the raw cotton for methylene blue dye adsorption. Several laboratory experiments conducted to optimize operational factors like pH, concentration of dye, adsorbent dose, contact time, and temperature. Optimized conditions of the study include an adsorbent dose of 0.35 g, pH of 7, an initial dye concentration of 20 ppm with contact time of 30 min at 20 ºC wherein 83% of adsorption take place. The mean values ± standard deviation from triplicate experiments were used to express the results with P < 0.05. The investigational data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm model having R2of 0.9477 and pseudo second order kinetic model having R2= 1. The values obtained for adsorption capacities through non-linear models exhibit a significant degree of similarity with those derived from linear models. Thermodynamic study showed a negative ∆G, positive ∆H and increased ∆S values revealing that the reaction was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The developed method was also tested with tap water which showed 72% of dye removal and subsequent regeneration of the system led to nearly 79% desorption of the dye. Results of the study revealed that additive salts had a minimum effect on the adsorption process. The originality of this study is that no research has been reported till yet, for adsorption of methylene blue by using low-cost raw cotton specifically in its non-modified form.

The expanding population and extensive usage of energy-consuming sources are the main factors driving the interest of current researchers toward the development of extremely effective and useful electrode materials for high-power energy storage devices. A novel class of 2D transition metal carbides such as MXene has captured significant attention and has distinguished itself from other electrode materials because of its remarkable electrochemical characteristics. In this work, we have fabricated MoO3and MnFe2O4via a simple co-precipitation method. Further, we design multifunctional MoO3/MnFe2O4/MXene composite by the combination of MoO3/MnFe2O4and MXene through the sonication route. SEM results confirmed the fabrication of nanorods of MoO3and nanoparticles of MnFe2O4, sandwiched within the MXene sheets. As evident from CV profiles, at 10 mVs−1MoO3/MnFe2O4@MXene showed a higher specific capacitance of 817 Fg−1than other electrode materials mainly because the combined effect of MoO3/MnFe2O4and the conductive nature of MXene sheets. Furthermore, even after 10,000 cycles, MoO3/MnFe2O4/MXene demonstrated outstanding cyclic stability, maintaining 90.2 % retention of its initial specific capacitance. Furthermore, MoO3/MnFe2O4/MXene showed less solution resistance and charge transfer resistance than all other prepared materials. The findings suggest that the MoO3/MnFe2O4/MXene composite is a competent capacitive material in the supercapacitor research area.

BackgroundDespite significant advancements in the procedural efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy in patients with ischemic stroke in recent years, there still remains a portion of the population that does not achieve good recanalization. The reasons for this may be varied. We hypothesized that static friction between the clot and the vessel, or catheter wall might contribute to the difficulty in removing the clot.ObjectiveTo determine if there is a relationship between clot composition and the resistance to sliding (friction) which might contribute to resistance to clot removal.MethodsAs clot composition can vary significantly, we investigated five different types of clot in order to measure their respective frictional properties. To do this, a custom-made testing apparatus was created, consisting of various replaceable low-friction surfaces on which the clots could be placed. The surface was then gradually tilted until the clots began to slide; the angle at which this occurred is related to the coefficient of friction of the clots. The experiment was repeated on a bovine aortic surface in order to confirm the results.ResultsWe found that fibrin-rich clots (<20% red blood cell content) have a significantly higher coefficient of friction than clots with a red blood cell content >20%. This result was confirmed by repeating the experiment on a bovine aortic surface as a representation of the interaction between clots and the arterial wall.ConclusionsThe friction properties of clots were found to be related to the content ratio of fibrin to red blood cells. Future imaging techniques that could show fibrin and red blood cell content might help us to predict the ‘stickiness’ of a clot.

IntroductionStudies comparing endovascular stroke treatment using mechanical thrombectomy (MT) with or without prior IV tissue plasminogen activator (tPa) have included only 30% of internal carotid artery terminus occlusions (ICA-O), a known predictor of recanalization failure with IV tPa.ObjectiveTo carry out a retrospective multicenter analysis of prospectively collected data of consecutive patients to investigate the impact of intravenous thrombolysis on ICA-O by comparing patients treated with MT alone or bridging therapy (BT).Material and methodsPatients with ICA-O treated with MT alone or BT were retrospectively examined and compared. Demographic data, vascular risk factors, treatment modalities, complications, technical and clinical outcomes were recorded. A propensity score (PS) analysis was used to compare modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 3 months and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) between groups.Results141 consecutive patients (60% BT/40% MT) were included between January 2014 and June 2016. Baseline characteristics did not differ between the groups. There was no significant difference in the rate of Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction 2b/3, distal emboli, and median number of passes between the groups. There was a significant difference between BT and MT groups in the median time between imaging and groin puncture (median 97 min vs 75, p=0.007), the rate of ICH (44% vs 27%, p=0.05), but not for symptomatic ICH (18% vs 13%, p=0.49). With PS, there was a trend towards a higher rate of ICH (OR=2.3, 95% CI 0.9 to 5.9, p=0.09) in the BT group compared with the MT alone group, with no difference in mRS score ≤2 at 3 months (OR=1.6, 95% CI 0.7 to 3.7, p=0.29).ConclusionThere was no significant difference in clinical outcomes between patients receiving bridging therapy versus direct thrombectomy. Bridging therapy delayed time to groin puncture and increased ICH rate.
