Extremely short, high-energy pulses are essential in modern ultrafast science. In a seminal paper in 19961, Nisoli and co-workers demonstrated the first intense pulse compression employing a gas-filled hollow-core fibre. Despite the huge body of scientific work on this technology stemming from ultrafast and attosecond research, here we identify an unexplored few-cycle visible-light generation mechanism, which relies on the nonlinear mixing of hollow-core fibre modes. Using a commercially available ytterbium laser, we generate 4.6 fs, 20 μJ pulses centred at around 600 nm (~2 cycles, ~4 GW peak power), ~40 times shorter than the input 175 fs, 1 mJ pulses at 1,035 nm. Our approach thus directly projects few-hundred-femtosecond-long infrared pulses into the single-cycle regime at visible frequencies, without the need for additional post-compression. As a powerful application of our findings, we present a compact, multicolour pump–probe set-up with a temporal resolution of a few optical cycles.

Ultrashort high-energy pulses at wavelengths longer than 1 µm are now desirable for a vast variety of applications in ultrafast and strong-field physics. To date, the main answer to the wavelength tunability for energetic, broadband pulses still relies on optical parametric amplification (OPA), which often requires multiple and complex stages, may feature imperfect beam quality, and has limited conversion efficiency into one of the amplified waves. In this work, we present a completely different strategy to realize an energy-efficient and scalable laser frequency shifter. This relies on the continuous red shift provided by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) over a long propagation distance in nitrogen-filled hollow-core fibers (HCF). We show a continuous tunability of the laser wavelength from 1030 nm up to 1730 nm with a conversion efficiency higher than 70% and high beam quality. The highly asymmetric spectral broadening, arising from the spatiotemporal nonlinear interplay between higher-order modes of the HCF, can be readily employed to generate pulses (∼20fs) significantly shorter than the pump ones (∼200fs) with high beam quality, and the pulse energy can further be scaled up to tens of millijoules. We envision that this technique, coupled with the emerging high-power Yb laser technology, has the potential to answer the increasing demand for energetic multi-TW few-cycle sources tunable in the near-IR.

We report on terahertz (THz) generation via optical rectification in a room-temperature lithium niobate crystal under variable pump pulse durations, ranging from 100 to 300 fs, at 800 nm center wavelength. The efficiency for the process is predicted to have an order of magnitude increase when longer duration Fourier-limited pump pulses are used. Our results confirm this increase in efficiency, and we report a record 800 nm pump energy conversion efficiency of 0.35% with a saturation at >240  fs pulse duration. While promising, our findings show a series of key problems that must be overcome before the theoretical limit can be achieved, including the influence of the pump bandwidth broadening due to the cascaded nonlinearity taking place within the crystal.

We investigate the generation of discrete spatial solitons in arrays of coupled waveguides. Light was launched into the center of the array, and different beam sizes and array geometries were tested. At low power, the propagating field spreads as it couples to more waveguides. When the intensity is increased, localization is observed around the input waveguides, leading to the formation of a discrete soliton. For wide input beams, exciting a few waveguides, soliton splitting, which is due to instability induced by multiphoton absorption, is observed. All of these effects are described well by a coupled-mode formalism.

We report on the observation of Type I third-harmonic generation induced by a train of femtosecond laser pulses in nematic liquid crystals. We find that as the average power of the train is increased, the frequency conversion process is enhanced as a consequence of the tight confinement of the pulses into a nonlocal spatial soliton.

We observe second harmonic generation via random quasi-phase-matching in a 2.0 μm periodically poled, 1-cm-long, z-cut lithium tantalate. Away from resonance, the harmonic output profiles exhibit a characteristic pattern stemming from a stochastic domain distribution and a quadratic growth with the fundamental excitation, as well as a broadband spectral response. The results are in good agreement with a simple model and numerical simulations in the undepleted regime, assuming an anisotropic spread of the random nonlinear component.

We experimentally study the polarization dynamics (orientation and ellipticity) of near-infrared light transmitted through magneto-optical yttrium iron garnet isolator crystal pairs using a modified balanced detection scheme. When the pair separation is in the submillimeter range, we observed a proximity effect in which the saturation field is reduced by up to 20%. One-dimensional calculations suggest that the proximity effect originates from magnetostatic interactions between the dipole moments of the isolator crystals.

We study experimentally and numerically the nonlinear scattering of wave packets by local multisite guiding centers embedded in a continuous dielectric medium as a function of the input power and angle of incidence. The extent of trapping into the linear modes of different sites is manipulated as a function of both the input power and the angle of incidence, demonstrating power-controlled switching of nonlinear trapping by local photonic potentials.

We have investigated both theoretically and experimentally the power threshold of discrete Kerr surface solitons at the interface between a discrete one-dimensional (1D) (waveguide array) and a continuous 1D (slab waveguide) AlGaAs medium. Decreasing power thresholds were predicted and measured for soliton trapping at sites with increasing distance from the boundary. The thresholds approached asymptotically the power required for a discrete soliton of equivalent width in an infinite lattice. The minimum threshold coincided with a minimum in the interchannel coupling strength.

We have observed the incoherent interaction between a highly confined (blocker) soliton and wide, moving signal beams of a different wavelength in a one-dimensional discrete Kerr medium. Digital switching of the blocker solitons to successive adjacent channels was measured with increasing signal power via both one and two cascaded interactions in an AlGaAs waveguide array, operations equivalent to a reconfigurable three-output router.

We investigate experimentally and numerically the interaction of a highly localized, single-channel discrete soliton (blocker) with a wide, tilted beam in a one-dimensional AlGaAs array. In agreement with theory the blocker is observed to discretely shift its position by multiple channels, depending on the intensity and relative phase of the tilted beam.

We investigated the interaction of discrete solitons with defect states fabricated in arrays of coupled waveguides. We achieved attractive and repulsive defects by decreasing and increasing, respectively, the spacing of one pair of waveguides in an otherwise uniform array. Linear and nonlinear propagation in the same samples show distinctly different properties. The role of the Peierls–Nabarro potential in the interaction of the soliton with the defect is discussed.

Nonclassical light sources of single and entangled photons are the backbone of future quantum communications infrastructure, and the cornerstone for realizing optical quantum computers. To reach practical applications, however, the enormous technical complexity of today’s sources must be drastically reduced through the development of integrated devices. In recent work, we have presented an approach for generating multiple two-photon and multiphoton entangled quantum states within a single waveguide mode.

We numerically investigate the trade-offs between the dispersion properties, coupling efficiency, and geometrical constraints in dual-wire (twin-lead) terahertz (THz) waveguides. In particular, we show that their inherent linearly polarized quasi-transverse electromagnetic (TEM) modes exist for waveguide transverse dimensions comparable with the wavelength, enabling significant end-fire coupling (>10%) for numericalaperture limited Gaussian beams while supporting a relatively low-dispersion propagation of below 0.5 ps2/m, as desired for short-pulse time-domain spectroscopy applications. Starting from the dual-wire structure, we also demonstrate that low-dispersion tapers can be designed to improve coupling efficiency.

We demonstrate a wide range of novel functions in integrated, CMOS compatible, devices. This platform has promise for telecommunications and on-chip WDM optical interconnects for computing.

When light waves propagate through disordered photonic lattices, they can eventually become localized due to multiple scattering effects. Here we show experimentally that while the evolution and localization of the photon density distribution is similar in the two cases of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, the density-density correlation carries a distinct signature of the type of disorder. We show that these differences reflect a symmetry in the spectrum and eigenmodes that exists in off-diagonally disordered lattices but is absent in lattices with diagonal disorder. Abstract: The nonlinear interactions between discrete optical solitons that propagate in different regimes of diffraction, and the nonlinear scattering of dispersive waves by local optical potentials, were studied experimentally. It is well known in electromagnetism that when linear coherent waves meet they interfere without interactions. Linear waves also scatter through local optical structures without exchanging any power with guided and anti-guided modes of these structures. When a focusing Kerr nonlinearity is present, linearly inhibited phenomena, which break these rules, are shown to exist. Our studies were performed with Silica glass and semiconductor AlGaAs nonlinear planar modulated waveguides, excited by ultra-short pulses in the near infrared spectral regime.
