Sustainable water management measures are being developed to address the challenges posed by agriculture runoff and leaching on water resources. These measures are based on experts' opinions from various sectors and disciplines, ensuring that all stakeholders' perspectives are considered. For this, establishing a common understanding of 'sustainability' is essential to avoid misunderstandings, conflicts, and operational challenges. In this research, the Delphi survey technique was utilized to develop a definition of 'sustainability' in agricultural water management (SAWM) by considering the interdisciplinary group of experts from different parts of the world and those involved in a Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Action. Twenty-six experts' perspectives on environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability were assessed, and identified key concepts included climate change, water quality, water availability, stakeholder participation, capacity building, subsidies, and incentives. These concepts were used to define sustainability for multi/interdisciplinary project settings. The definition was validated with consortium members of the project in the regular consortium-wide meetings and used in the respective deliverables dealing with sustainability. The results serve as a foundation for communication between the involved actors and the project's definition of 'sustainability.' One recommendation from this work for broader policy formulation for SAWM in Europe is to prioritize farmer needs and focus on environmental sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Operating within the sphere of fast-paced OSINT, TRAC cannot be evaluated by the same criteria as traditional databases that index library-acquired, print, and electronically published materials, but this review will attempt to fairly critique the quality and usability of the product. Interdisciplinary research and education programmes in water science are intended to produce groundbreaking research, often with an emphasis on societal relevance, and prepare future water resource experts to work across disciplines. This paper explores the emerging outcomes from an ongoing doctoral programme currently in its seventh year. Within the programme, there is both cross-disciplinary and mono-disciplinary research. Three questions are explored: (i) whether cross-disciplinary research leads to more innovative scientific findings than monodisciplinary research, (ii) whether cross-disciplinary researchers develop professional skills that benefit their future careers, and (iii) whether cross-disciplinary research produces findings of greater societal relevance than monodisciplinary research. Various indicators are used to measure research and education outcomes. Analysis of journal impact factors and citation rates of Institute of Scientific Information indexed publications suggests that crossdisciplinary research findings are more innovative. Comparison between graduate research profile and their career destinations suggests that researchers who learn to work across the disciplines continue to work this way in their post-doctoral positions. Analysis of media interest in research findings or their impact on policy suggeststhat both types of research are of societal value, but researchers often expand their understanding of a societal interest topic by bringing in new research fields. We sought to define elements that are essential to building a high-volume, referral-based head and neck endocrine center; to meet these goals, we undertook a retrospective analysis of referral patterns and surgical volumes in an academic medical center. Some specific factors contributing to program building were investigated. Outcome measures included surgical volumes, geographic origin of referrals, and prevalence of internet referrals. Thyroidectomy annual surgical volumes at the primary institution (all surgeons included) increased during a 4-year period by 38%, from 78 to 108. The proportion of referrals coming from outside the institution grew from 31.6% to 65.5%. Individuals who self-referred by internet contact increased from 0 to 10 per year. Overall departmental thyroidectomy volumes (at all operative venues) increased by 241%, from 69 to 166. The factors that were thought to contribute most to an increased surgical volume were public thyroid screening events, public symposia, same-day availability and “one-stop shopping,” online accessibility, state-of-the art offerings (IOPTH, LNM, endoscopic surgery, outpatient surgery, office ultrasound), and inauguration of a multidisciplinary thyroid center. Although the nature of practice dynamics prevents meaningful analysis to determine the precise origin of growth, several specific measures were thought to be critical to achieving clinical expansion, including formation and institutional recognition of a thyroid center of excellence.
