ABSTRACTIn ball sports, such as volleyball or soccer, the impact sound of the ball is used to define the shot length and predict the final ball position on the field. Several studies thoroughly investigated the role of sound intensity in predicting the ball’s landing point, neglecting the equally important contribution of the sound frequency spectrum component. Here, we investigated the contribution of the sound frequency spectrum in defining a volleyball serve’s length (i.e., distance). We recorded the sound of short and long volleyball serves (ecological sound) and changed their frequency spectrum in pink noise, preserving their intensity (noise sound). We then presented both sounds (ecological and noise) to expert volleyball players and measured their performance in short and long-shot classifications. The role of auditory-motor experience in sound classification was also explored by testing soccer players (experience on ball shots but not sport-specific auditory-motor experience) and non-athletes (no auditory-motor experience in sports). We found that hearing ecological sound leads to better sound discrimination performance than noise sound. Concurrently, we found an effect of the specific auditory-motor experience, with volleyball players outperforming non-athletes and soccer players. Interestingly, experts in different sports domains (soccer players) mainly used sound intensity for shot classification. This underlines the importance of specific auditory-motor experience in encoding specific sound frequency spectrum for the sound of action classification.

Biomaterials able to promote neuronal development and neurite outgrowth are highly desired in neural tissue engineering for the repair of damaged or disrupted neural tissue and restoring the axonal connection. For this purpose, the use of either electroactive or micro- and nanostructured materials has been separately investigated. Here, the use of a nanomodulated conductive poly(3,4-ethylendioxithiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) substrate that exhibits instructive topographical and electrical cues at the same time was investigated for the first time. In particular, thin films featuring grooves with sizes comparable with those of neuronal neurites (NanoPEDOT) were fabricated by electrochemical polymerization of PEDOT/PSS on a nanomodulated polycarbonate template. The ability of NanoPEDOT to support neuronal development and direct neurite outgrowth was demonstrated by assessing cell viability and proliferation, expression of neuronal markers, average neurite length, and direction of neuroblastoma N2A cells induced to differentiate on this novel support. In addition to the beneficial effect of the nanogrooved topography, a 30% increase was shown in the average length of neurites when differentiating cells were subjected to an electrical stimulation of a few microamperes for 6 h. The results reported here suggest a favorable effect on the neuronal development of the synergistic combination of nanotopography and electrical stimulation, supporting the use of NanoPEDOT in neural tissue engineering to promote physical and functional reconnection of impaired neural networks.

ABSTRACTThe home advantage and the subconscious referee bias regularly occur in professional sports, particularly in association football. The matches played behind closed doors in spring and summer 2020 highlighted that the crowd support is one of the main factors contributing to both phenomena in domestic leagues. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the same applies also to national teams matches, given the different impact of the other factors determining the home advantage in such matches. To this purpose, the 2018–19 and the 2020–21 editions of the UEFA Nations League – 133 matches each – were analysed, the former played in front of spectators while the latter with no or limited attendance. In particular, we examined a set of indicators of home advantage (match outcome, points, goals scored, ball possession, total shots, shots on goal, corner kicks) and of referee bias (fouls, yellow cards, red cards, penalty kicks, extra time), controlling for the FIFA World Ranking points and the number of time zones crossed. Comparing home and away teams on these parameters within each edition, we observed the occurrence of both phenomena in 2018-19, as well as their absence in 2020-21. Moreover, the comparison between the two editions revealed a significant reduction of both phenomena. The results indicate that spectators have a decisive role in contributing to both the home advantage and the referee bias in national teams matches.

The water dispersion of the conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most used material precursors in organic electronics also thanks to its industrial production. There is a growing interest for conductive polymers that could be alternative surrogates or replace PEDOT:PSS in some applications. A recent study by our group compared electrodeposited PEDOT:Nafion vs PEDOT:PSS in the use for neural recordings. Here, we introduce an easy and reproducible synthetic protocol to prepare a water dispersion of PEDOT:Nafion. The conductivity of the pristine material is on the order of 2 S cm–1and was improved up to ≈6 S cm–1upon treatment with ethylene glycol. Faster ion transfer was assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and, interestingly, an improved adhesion was observed for coatings of the new PEDOT:Nafion dispersion on glass substrates, even without the addition of the silane cross-linker needed for PEDOT:PSS. As proof of concept, we demonstrate the use of this novel water dispersion of PEDOT:Nafion in three different organic electronic device architectures, namely, an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT), a memristor, and an artificial synapse.

In situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) allowed us to investigate the evolution at the early stages of the growth of organic thin films. An ultrahigh-vacuum atomic force microscope, integrated with a Knudsen effusion cell for the sublimation of α-sexithiophene (6T), continuously scans the same region during the deposition of sublimed molecules on native silicon oxide as a function of the substrate temperature. Noncontact AFM images acquired sequentially provide snapshots of the time evolution of the film morphology that is monitored up to the deposition of five monolayers. At all substrate temperatures, a Stranski–Krastanov growth mode of organic films is observed: the first two monolayers grow layer-by-layer (two-dimensional—2D), then films evolve into islands (three-dimensional—3D). Despite the apparent similarity, we find an anomalous dynamic scaling characterized by the abrupt change of the growth exponent β vs substrate temperature. This novel transition, induced by the substrate temperature, is ascribed to the morphological transition from ziggurat islands to large terraces. The analysis of the evolution of the root-mean-square (RMS) roughness based on the distributed growth model underlines the role of down-hill mass transport for the growth of the first two monolayers, transport that is progressively hindered for the next monolayers.

In order to frame excessive smartphone use as an addiction, it is important to understand whether this behavior determines abstinence symptoms and which damaging effect it has on emotions and cognition. However, an appropriate tool to assess the presence of smartphone abstinence symptoms is still lacking. In the present study, we propose a scale that is specifically developed to assess the psychological state deriving from smartphone abstinence: The Abstinence from Smartphone Scale (ABSS-10). The aim of this work is to validate ABSS-10 and to investigate its relevance in the context of smartphone addiction. Two studies were conducted to explore ABSS-10 psychometric properties, focusing on discriminant validity, and its relationship with smartphone dependence and emotional attachment. In Study 1, university students were administered the ABSS-10 two times during a two and a half-hour long smartphone restriction period. In Study 2, the scale was administered three times during a five-hour long smartphone restriction period. General state anxiety and smartphone dependence scales were also administered. The findings reveal that ABSS-10 effectively differentiates smartphone abstinence symptoms from general state anxiety and dependence. Moreover, results show that the scale detects changes in abstinence symptoms scores during a five-hour restriction period. The scale’s utility in both research and practical settings is discussed, highlighting its potential contributions to understanding the psychological dynamics of smartphone use and abstinence. The present work suggests that ABSS-10 is a robust tool for research on the psychological effects of smartphone usage.

Electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistors (EGOFETs), based on ultrathin pentacene films on quartz, were operated with electrolyte solutions whose pH was systematically changed. Transistor parameters exhibit nonmonotonic variation versus pH, which cannot be accounted for by capacitive coupling through the Debye–Helmholtz layer. The data were fitted with an analytical model of the accumulated charge in the EGOFET, where Langmuir adsorption was introduced to describe the pH-dependent charge buildup at the quartz surface. The model provides an excellent fit to the threshold voltage and transfer characteristics as a function of the pH, which demonstrates that quartz acts as a second gate controlled by pH and is mostly effective from neutral to alkaline pH. The effective capacitance of the device is always greater than the capacitance of the electrolyte, thus highlighting the role of the substrate as an important active element for amplification of the transistor response.

Thin films of organic semiconductors have been widely studied at different length scales for improving the electrical response of devices based on them. Hitherto, a lot of knowledge has been gained about how molecular packing, morphology, grain boundaries, and defects affect the charge transport in organic thin film transistors. However, little is known about the impact of an electric field on the organic semiconductor microstructure and the consequent effect on the device performances. To fill this gap, we investigated the evolution of the structure of pentacene thin film transistors during device operation by in situ real time X-ray diffraction measurements and theoretical calculations. We observed for the first time the occurrence of a reversible structural strain taking place during the bias application mainly due to reorientation at the terrace edges of monolayer islands under the effect of electrical field. Strain exhibits the same trend of the threshold voltage hinting to the existence of a direct correlation between the phenomenon of bias stress and the structural modification.

The realization of organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) based on α,ω-dihexylcarbonylquaterthiophene (DHCO4T), an intrinsically ambipolar and luminescent semiconductor, is reported. In this device structure, optimization of the hole/electron density ratio in the channel region has been identified as the major issue to optimize light emission.. Therefore, the focus of this study is to understand how DHCO4T optoelectronic response vary with semiconductor film growth conditions as well as the selection of the gate dielectric and metal contact materials. Our results demonstrate that DHCO4T hole and electron mobilities and the IDS− VDShysteresis mainly depend on the gate dielectric material composition. Atomic force microscopy analysis of the semiconductor film reveals a layer-by-layer growth mechanism, giving rise to the formation of a continuous and homogeneous charge transport layers. With Au as the source and drain contact material, the best carrier mobilities have been measured for the poly(methyl methacrylate)-coated SiO 2gate dielectric devices. Metals with Fermi energy ranging from −5.1 to −2.87 eV have also been investigated. Metal deposition on the semiconductor film does not significantly affect film morphology as evidenced by the topography of the electrode top surface. However, for a given dielectric material, the OLET performance strongly depends on the metal/dielectric combination employed and marginally correlates with the contact Fermi energy. Electroluminescence has been observed in DHCO4T-based OLETs but principally in concert with unipolar transport. The hole and electron large gate threshold voltage values have been identified as the principal limitation to high electroluminescence performances.

An investigation into the stability of metal insulator semiconductor (MIS) transistors based on α‐sexithiophene is reported. In particular the kinetics of the threshold voltage shift upon application of a gate bias has been determined. The kinetics follow a stretched‐hyperbola type behavior, in agreement with the formalism developed to explain metastability in amorphous–silicon thin film transistors. Using this model, quantification of device stability is possible. Temperature‐dependent measurements show that there are two processes involved in the threshold voltage shift, one occurring at T≈220 K and the other at T≈300 K. The latter process is found to be sample dependent. This suggests a relation between device stability and α‐sexithiophene deposition parameters. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Microelectrode arrays are used for recording and stimulation in neurosciences both in vitro and in vivo. The electrodeposition of conductive polymers, such as poly(3,4‐ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), is widely adopted to improve both the in vivo recording and the charge injection limit of metallic microelectrodes. The workhorse of conductive polymers in the neurosciences is PEDOT:PSS, where PSS represents polystyrene‐sulfonate. In this paper, the counterion is the fluorinated polymer Nafion, so the composite PEDOT:Nafion is deposited onto a flexible neural microelectrode array. PEDOT:Nafion coated electrodes exhibit comparable in vivo recording capability to the reference PEDOT:PSS, providing a large signal‐to‐noise ratio in a murine animal model. Importantly, PEDOT:Nafion exhibits a minimized polarization during electrical stimulation, thereby resulting in an improved charge injection limit equal to 4.4 mC cm−2, almost 80% larger than the 2.5 mC cm−2that is observed for PEDOT:PSS. Poly(3,4‐ethylene dioxythiophene)(PEDOT):Nafion coatings electrodepositon a neural microelectrode array provided an improved charge injection limit when subjected to sub‐millisecond current pulses and comparable recording capability to the PEDOT:polystyrene‐sulfonate control. The results outline how PEDOT:Nafion is particularly beneficial for biomedical applications that require current flow while minimizing related tissue damage.

Introduction. Despite the increasing of number of patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Italy, due to multi-ethnic migratory phenomena, a large percentage of Caucasian sickle population is already present in Italy mainly with b-thal/HbS genotype. Red cell transfusion is one effective treatment for both acute and chronic complications of SCD, while hydroxycarbamide (HC) is used to reduce the frequency of painful vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) and decrease the need for blood transfusion.

Introduction.Beta thalassemia major (β-TM) displays a great deal of genotypic heterogeneity, not fully investigated in terms of cause-effect. This prospective and multicentre study aimed to detect if different genotypic groups could predict the development of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) abnormalities and cardiac complications (CC).

Background. Although physical activity (PA) is known to be beneficial in improving motor symptoms of people with Parkinson’s disease (pwPD), little is known about the relationship between gait patterns and features of PA performed during daily life. Objective. To verify the existence of possible relationships between spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters of gait and amount/intensity of PA, both instrumentally assessed. Methods. Eighteen individuals affected by PD (10F and 8M, age 68.0 ± 10.8 years, 1.5 ≤ Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) < 3) were required to wear a triaxial accelerometer 24 h/day for 3 consecutive months. They also underwent a 3D computerized gait analysis at the beginning and end of the PA assessment period. The number of daily steps and PA intensity were calculated on the whole day, and the period from 6:00 to 24:00 was grouped into 3 time slots, using 3 different cut-point sets previously validated in the case of both pwPD and healthy older adults. 3D gait analysis provided spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters of gait, including summary indexes of quality (Gait Profile Score (GPS) and Gait Variable Score (GVS)). Results. The analysis of hourly trends of PA revealed the existence of two peaks located in the morning (approximately at 10) and in the early evening (between 18 and 19). However, during the morning time slot (06:00–12:00), pwPD performed significantly higher amounts of steps (4313 vs. 3437 in the 12:00–18:00 time slot, p<0.001, and vs. 2889 in the 18:00–24:00 time slot, p=0.021) and of moderate-to-vigorous PA (43.2% vs. 36.3% in the 12:00–18:00 time slot, p=0.002, and vs. 31.4% in the 18:00–24:00 time slot, p=0.049). The correlation analysis shows that several PA intensity parameters are significantly associated with swing-phase duration (rho = −0.675 for sedentary intensity, rho = 0.717 for moderate-to-vigorous intensity, p<0.001), cadence (rho = 0.509 for sedentary intensity, rho = −0.575 for moderate-to-vigorous intensity, p<0.05), and overall gait pattern quality as expressed by GPS (rho = −0.498 to −0.606 for moderate intensity, p<0.05) and GVS of knee flexion-extension (rho = −0.536 for moderate intensity, p<0.05). Conclusions. Long-term monitoring of PA integrated by the quantitative assessment of spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters of gait may represent a useful tool in supporting a better-targeted prescription of PA and rehabilitative treatments in pwPD.
