2. Trace element distributions in some saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica

Abstract

The distributions of trace elements in Shield, Ace and Burton Lakes of the Vestfold Hills were investigated. Three aspects are discussed as follows: (1) the vertical distribution of 18 trace elements in the three lakes, (2) the behaviour of trace elements in the lakes, especially that of manganese in Shield Lake, and (3) the origin of trace elements in antarctic saline lakes.

3. Effects of nitroglycerin on ATP-induced Ca(++)-mobilization, Ca(++)-activated K channels and contraction of cultured smooth muscle cells of porcine coronary artery.

Abstract

Extracellular application of ATP transiently increases the cytosolic-free Ca++ concentration ([Ca++]i) in cultured smooth muscle cells of porcine coronary artery, and this activates large conductance Ca(++)-activated K (Kca) channels. In the present study effects of nitroglycerin (NG) and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on [Ca++]; and contraction were studied. 4-AP blocked Kca channels and enhanced the rise of [Ca++]i with oscillation, which led to contraction of the cells. NG activated the Kca channels of 300 picosiemens and inhibited 4-AP-induced contraction and oscillation of [Ca++]i. These results suggest that the vasorelaxant effect of NG involves hyperpolarization of the cell membrane by activating the Kca channels. NG also cause rapid decrease of [Ca++]i during the Ca(++)-mobilization by ATP in Ca-free solution. Similar effects were observed with cyclic GMP, suggesting that the effects of NG on the Kca channels and [Ca++]i were mediated by cyclic GMP.

8. Noninvasive estimation of left-ventricular end-diastole elasticity by analysing heart wall vibrations

Abstract

A new noninvasive method was previously presented for the measurement of the left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic pressure (EDP) by combining Mirsky's method and the experimentally derived relationship. The eigenfrequency was determined by applying a short-time Fourier transform to the velocity signal on the human heart wall which is transcutaneously measured in vivo by the phased tracking method using ultrasound. In the Letter the authors estimate the elasticity of the heart wall for several human patients.

16. The effect of polymorphism on serotonin and histamine reseptor in antipsychotic action of olanzapine

Abstract

Purpose: There are individual differences in the effects of antipsychotic drugs. As the genetic polymorphisms of several reseptors are thought to be a cause of individual differences, we investigated the effects of the genetic polymorphisms in serotonin receptors, histamine receptor and serotonin transporter genes on the clinical outcome of olanzapine. Methods: Patients of schizophrenia were enrolled simultaneously at St. Marianna University hospital with their written informed consent. In this study was approved by the institutional review board at St. Marianna University School of Medicine. Patients were given olanzapine (5∼20mg) and blood were collected at 8weeks after drug administration. Clinical symptoms were evaluated by the PANSS scores before drug administration and at 4∼8weeks of follow up. Genomic DNA were extracted from peripheral blood samples to analyze genetic polymorphisms 5HT2A (25Thr/Asp, 102T/C, 452His/Tyr, -1438G/A), 5HT2C (23Cys/Ser), 5HTTLPR (-1396 44bp Ins/Del), H2R (-1018G/A), by PCR-RFLP and the method of direct sequence. Results: The polymorphic groups of 5HT2A (452His/Tyr, -1438G/A) and 5HT2C (23Cys/Ser) were prone to present better PANSS scores compared to the wild type group, whereas the group of 5HT2A(102T/C) showed insignificant results.
