We present a microscopic analysis of the nuclear spin response to proton excitation by examining the specific case of the40Ca reaction. Recent results at LAMPF indicate an interesting trend of a decrease in spin dipole strength and an increase in quadrupole strength when the proton momentum transfer is increased. We show that these effects are consistent with Random Phase Approximation (RPA) results and that, furthermore, the experimental spin response can be used to yield unequivocal information on the strength of the spin-isospin component of the nuclear interaction.

Fast neutron emission from the giant quadrupole resonance region is studied. To explain the characteristic neutron angular distribution observed by coincidence experiments, we investigated the escape process of the giant quadrupole resonance and the contribution from the direct knockout reaction.

A new simulation system of diagnostic and therapeutic processes is developed. The aim is to train medical students for the practical use of their knowledge, utilizing patient data in a total hospital information system. The knowledge in the system is presented by the specialists for every case. In medical school there are many specialists in various fields. With their cooperation the system can grow up to a comprehensive CAI system for clinical education. The system is designed to work on the mainframe for easiness of development, maintenance and extensions of the system. The present framework has been applied to the simulation of diagnostic process. The usefulness of the present system has been confirmed by specialists and students.

Communication: The preparation of a volatile single‐source precursor containing two or more types of metals is challenging.Such single‐source CVD liquid precursors have been prepared and studied by these authors. One precursor is capable of delivering vapor containing equal amounts of Sr and Ta. The second is a liquid mixture of two precursors containing Sr–Ta and Sr–Nb and has the collective formula Sr[Ta0.7Nb0.3(OC2H5)5‐(OC2H4OCH3)]2. Satisfactory Sr–Ta–Nb–O films are deposited at 500 °C and factors affecting deposition have been studied.

The recovery characteristics of optical hydrogen sensor, using Pd film, have been investigated in order to clarify their distinctive behaviour showing three-stage curve. The obvious two peaks observed in differentiated reflectance as a function of elapsed time during hydrogen desorption were found to correspond to the phase boundaries of Pd hydride. The phase transformation determined by these peaks was consistent with that observed within situX-ray diffraction analysis. Moreover, the change in resistivity with hydrogen desorption indicated distinctive recovery curve, which was also connected with the phase transformation. These results clarified that the hydrogen desorption obviously consisted of three-stage process, and the distinctive behaviour was due to the phase transformation of Pd hydride.

The importance of semi-direct processes in E1 and E2 capture reactions has been well documented. Little is known, however, about M1 capture although a vast body of data indicates a non-statistical nature. We discuss here the importance of the semi-direct M1 process and concentrate in particular on recent experimental results claiming that the M 1 strength in29Si isnearly one order of magnitude smaller than in28Si, the target nucleus. We use shell model arguments to demonstrate that this reduction is indeed consistent with the semi-direct reaction process and that other mechanisms like2p-2h fragmentation and phonon coupling are not likely to be instrumental in elucidating further the non-statistical nature of the28Si+n reaction.

Abstract: Objective: The effect of pravastatin was evaluated using patient data accumulated in the data base of a hospital information system (HIS). Methods: We selected 130 patients treated with pravastatin 10 mg per day, for a minimum period of 4 weeks. Results: In the t test analysis, the reduction rates of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels for pravastatin administration were 18%, and 27%, respectively. These values were similar to previous reports. The high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level, however, did not change significantly, although previous reports have shown an elevation of HDL levels. In an attempt to explain the origin of this difference, we studied the pretreatment value dependence of the cholesterol change using regression analysis. We found that pravastatin raised the HDL level in those cases where pretreatment values were lower than 58 mg · dl−1 and reduced it for higher values. We also showed that the reductions of TC, LDL and triglyceride (TG) levels correlated positively with their pretreatment values.

Al doped ZnO (AZO) films were prepared on quartz substrates by the co-evaporation of ZnO and Al2O3 ingots by EB-PVD. EB power applied to the Al2O3 source was ranged from 3kW to 10kW, while EB power to the ZnO source was fixed at 3kW, at a substrate temperature of 400degC. X-ray diffraction measurement showed that the AZO films were weakly c-axis oriented. Transmittance of All the AZO films was over 80% in the visible range. Highest reflectance in the near IR range was obtained at the EB power on Al2O3 of 5kW. The lowest resistivity of 3.05 x 10[?]4 Ocm was obtained for the film deposited with the EB power on Al2O3 of 5kW with the deposition time of 300s.

Thin films of aluminium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Al) as heat reflective coatings were prepared by multi-target reactive sputtering using metallic Zn and Al targets. An optimization of Al content and a reduction in oxygen partial pressure were crucial in increasing the carrier concentration Ne and the Hall mobility u. The ZnO:Al film with the highest Ne achieved the shortest plasma wavelength lp of 1375 nm, which shifted the near-infrared reflectance spectrum closer to the visible region. The high u reduced the optical absorption and enhanced the reflectance. Moreover, the multi-target system enabled intermittent doping of Al, which was applied to stack multilayers consisting of non-doped and Al-doped ZnO layers. A drop in the refractive indices n above lp for the ZnO:Al layers formed the periodic distribution of n in the thickness direction, which provided a high reflectance zone from 1000 to 1400 nm in wavelength.
