Two medications typically used to treat opioid addiction, nalmefene and naltrexone, have shown promise in treating compulsive gambling. This suggests that there may be similar brain circuits involved in behavioral addictions as those involved in drug addiction. While talking therapy is the usual treatment for gambling addiction, it does not work for everyone. Randomized trials have found that nalmefene and naltrexone were the most effective medications for gambling addiction, although side effects may cause some individuals to stop taking them. Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to explore treatment options for gambling disorder. [Extracted from the article]
