Context.Detailed studies of the photometric and kinematical properties of compact groups of galaxies are crucial to understand the physics of galaxy interactions and to shed light on some aspects of galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we present a kinematical and photometrical study of a member, NGC 4778, of the nearest ($z=0.0137$) compact group: Hickson 62.

3. Photometric validation of a model independent procedure to extract galaxy clusters*

Abstract

By means of CCD photometry in three bands (Gunn g, r, i) we investigate the existence of 12 candidate clusters extracted via a model independent peak finding algorithm ([CITE]) from DPOSS data. The derived color-magnitude diagrams allow us to confirm the physical nature of 9 of the cluster candidates, and to estimate their photometric redshifts. Of the other candidates, one is a fortuitous detection of a true cluster at $z \sim 0.4$, one is a false detection and the last is undecidable on the basis of the available data. The accuracy of the photometric redshifts is tested on an additional sample of 8 clusters with known spectroscopic redshifts. Photometric redshifts turn out to be accurate within $z \sim 0.01$(interquartile range).

Abstract

The composite galaxy luminosity function (hereafter LF) of 39 Abell clusters of galaxies is derived by computing the statistical excess of galaxy counts in the cluster direction with respect to control fields. Due to the wide field coverage of the digitised POSS-II plates, we can measure field counts around each cluster in a fully homogeneous way. Furthermore, the availability of virtually unlimited sky coverage allows us to directly compute the LF errors without having to rely on the estimated variance of the background. The wide field coverage also allows us to derive the LF of the whole cluster, including galaxies located in the cluster outskirts. The global composite LF has a slope $\alpha\sim-1.1\pm0.2$with minor variations from blue to red filters, and $M^*\sim-21.7,-22.2,-22.4$mag ($H_0=50$km s-1Mpc-1) in $g, r$and ifilters, respectively (errors are detailed in the text). These results are in quite good agreement with several previous determinations and in particular with the LF determined for the inner region of a largely overlapping set of clusters, but derived making use of a completely different method for background subtraction. The similarity of the two LFs suggests the existence of minor differences between the LF in the cluster outskirts and in the central region, or a negligible contribution of galaxies in the cluster outskirts to the global LF.

6. Therapeutic Targeting of G-Protein Coupled Receptor-Mediated Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Transactivation in Human Glioma Brain Tumors

Abstract

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is the main tyrosine kinase receptor dysregulated or overexpressed in brain cancer types and its expression is directly correlated with tumor malignancy and unfavorable prognosis. Recently, the availability of endogenous EGFR ligands has been reported to be also regulated indirectly by the activation of several G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in many cancer cell types. This EGFR transactivation mechanism requires the initial activation of a GPCR that in turn induces the cleavage of membrane-bound EGFR ligands precursors via the involvement of the family of disintegrin and metalloproteases (ADAMs). The discovery of ADAMs in this transactivation mechanism led to the development of small molecule inhibitors. In this minireview we describe the expression of GPCR, ADAMs and EGFR ligands in human glioma brain tumors and the characteristics of small molecule ADAMs inhibitors. The addition of ADAM inhibitors to our pharmacological arsenal could enhance the outcome of combination therapies when using EGFR inhibitors against human brain tumors.

7. Botulinum toxin in the treatment of overactive bladder

Abstract

Clinical effectiveness of botulinum toxin (BTX) in the treatment of both neurogenic and idiopathic detrusor overactivity has been demonstrated in several studies. However, different protocols and techniques have been used by authors.Methods. Literature review on intradetrusor injection of BTX for detrusor overactivity.Results. The greatest clinical experience reports the use of 200 and 300 U Botox®. Available data suggest that clinical efficacy, duration, and the side effect profile is similar at these doses. Very few data, on the other hand, are available regarding the clinical outcomes using the Dysport® preparation; isolated reports support that efficacy is similar when using a dosing range of 500 to 1000 SU with increased risk of systemic side effects using 1000 SU. A variety of injection volumes was used, demonstrating similar efficacy and tolerability profile. Clinical effect duration extends six to ten months in the majority of studies. Data suggest that a repeated injection scheme proves successful in the vast majority of initial responders.Conclusions. Safety, effectiveness, specificity and reversibility make BTX a new attractive treatment modality for overactive bladder syndrome. However, more experience is needed to standardize the injection protocol with respect to therapeutic outcomes and adverse effects.

8. Crystallization Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Regiodefective, Highly Stereoregular Isotactic Polypropylene:  Effect of Regiodefects versus Stereodefects and Influence of the Molecular Mass

Abstract

Highly isotactic polypropylene samples, containing a very low amount of rr stereodefects (0.1−0.2%) and slightly higher concentration of defects of regioregularity (0.8−0.9% of 2,1 erythro units), with different molecular masses have been prepared with an isospecific but not fully regioselective metallocene catalyst. The effects of the presence of rr defects and of 2,1 regiodefects and the effect of the molecular mass on the mechanical properties and crystallization behavior of polypropylene have been analyzed. Samples containing 2,1 regiodefects are very stiff and much more fragile than the samples containing only rr stereodefects. The presence of rr defects, even for low concentrations, produces instead increase of ductility and improvement of drawability at room temperature. The different effect of stereo- and regiodefects is probably related to their different levels of inclusion inside the crystalline phase. The uniform inclusion of rr defects in the crystals makes the stereodefective and regioregular samples more homogeneous, where crystalline and amorphous phases have the same composition. The study of the crystallization behavior has shown that the molecular mass strongly influences the amount of α and γ forms that crystallize from the melt. Samples containing regiodefects and with high molecular masses (higher than 200 000) show the same amount of γ form and the same crystallization rate. A lower amount of γ form and higher crystallization rates are instead observed for the sample having similar microstructure but lower molecular mass. This indicates that the crystallization of the γ form is favored over the α form when the crystallization is slow, that is, for samples with high molecular mass. When the molecular mass is lower than 100 000, the crystallization is faster and the formation of the α form is kinetically favored. The comparison with regioregular samples containing only rr stereodefects has shown that the effects of rr stereodefects and 2,1 regiodefects on the crystallization properties of polypropylene are very similar, at least when the concentration of defects is small (1% of rr stereodefects or 2,1 erythro units). Both defects produce a shortening of the regular crystallizable isotactic and regioregular sequences, inducing crystallization of the γ form.

Abstract

cAMP signals are received and transmitted by multiple isoforms of cAMP-dependent protein kinases, typically determined by their specific regulatory subunits. In the brain the major regulatory isoform RIIbeta and the RII-anchor protein, AKAP150 (rat) or 75 (bovine), are differentially expressed. Cortical neurons express RIIbeta and AKAP75; conversely, granule cerebellar cells express predominantly RIalpha and RIIalpha. Cortical neurons accumulate PKA catalytic subunit and phosphorylated cAMP responsive element binding protein very efficiently into nuclei upon cAMP induction, whereas granule cerebellar cells fail to do so. Down-regulation of RIIbeta synthesis by antisense oligonucleotides inhibited cAMP-induced nuclear signaling in cortical neurons. Expression in cerebellar granule cells of RIIbeta and AKAP75 genes by microinjection of specific expression vectors, markedly stimulated cAMP-induced transcription of the lacZ gene driven by a cAMP-responsive element promoter. These data indicate that the composition of PKA in cortical and granule cells underlies the differential ability of these cells to transmit cAMP signals to the nucleus.

Abstract

We present the first results of the spectroscopy of distant, obscured AGN as obtained with the ultra-deep (≈3.3 Ms) XMM-Newton survey in the Chandra deep field South. One of the primary goals of the project is to characterize the X-ray spectral properties of obscured and heavily obscured Compton-thick AGN over the range of redhifts and luminosities that are relevant in terms of their contribution to the X-ray background. The ultra-deep exposure, coupled with the XMM detector’s spectral throughput, allowed us to accumulate good quality X-ray spectra for a large number of X-ray sources and, in particular, for heavily obscured AGN at cosmological redshifts. Specifically we present the X-ray spectral properties of two high-redshift – z= 1.53 and z= 3.70 – sources. The XMM spectra of both are very hard, with a strong iron Kαline at a rest-frame energy of  ~6.4 keV. A reflection-dominated continuum provides the best description of the X-ray spectrum of the z= 1.53 source, while the intrinsic continuum of the z= 3.70 AGN is obscured by a large column NH≈ 1024cm-2of cold gas. Compton-thick absorption, or close to it, is unambiguously detected in both sources. Interestingly, these sources would not be selected as candidate Compton thick AGN by some multiwavelength selection criteria based on the mid-infrared to optical and X-ray to optical flux ratios.

13. Dopamine Synthesis, Uptake and Metabolism in Embryonic Rat Mesencephalic Cultures

Abstract

We have developed an HPLC method using electrochemical detection (ED) to study the synthesis, uptake and metabolism of dopamine (DA) in primary cell cultures dissociated from rat embryonic mesencephalon. The method is rapid and simple and is also able to detect, after 7 days in vitro incubation (DIV), intracellular levels of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC). The amount of DA synthesized and taken up from the cells is directly proportional to in vitro development time; the contents of endogenous DA is related to the number of mesencephalic neurons originally plated. When the dopa decarboxylase inhibitor α-methyldopa is added to the incubation medium, it reduces DA levels and conversely increases the amount of L-DOPA in a dose-dependent manner. In mesencephalic-striatal cocultures a statistically significant increase in the amount of DA is observed. This is not observed when either cerebellar or conical cells are used in the cocultures which confirms the importance of target striatal cells in the maturation of dopaminergic mesencephalic neurons. Abstract

We present a new analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data aimed at producing a detailed map of the nearby () universe. Using neural networks trained on the available spectroscopic base of knowledge we derived distance estimates for ∼ 30 million galaxies distributed over ∼ 8, 000 sq. deg. We also used unsupervised clustering tools developed in the framework of the VO-Tech project, to investigate the possibility to understand the nature of each object present in the field and, in particular, to produce a list of candidate AGNs and QSOs.
