- Abstract
The Molecular Basis of Color and Form– Chemistry in Art, a general-education chemistry lab course for nonscience majors, introduces students to aspects of geochemistry through the study of the ceramics and glass used by artists. Students learn through lecture and hands-on activities about the raw materials used to produce pottery of various kinds, glasses, and glazes as well as the development of ceramic technologies by peoples throughout history. Laboratory experiences include preparation of low-fire ceramics, investigation of glazes, and the preparation, coloring, etching, and analysis of various glasses. The course can serve as a model for making physical-science courses more interesting and relevant, not only for humanities, arts and education majors, but also for science majors as well.
