Are we defined by the words we use? To what extent the words we chose determine our speech? Can words exert violence? This article puts forward the results and findings of a survey carried out with a group of college students on the use of flattering and hate speech. The survey confirms the extended use of sexist language and foremore the use of hate speech. In our theoretical approach we take into consideration Judith Butler’s theory of hate speech and performativity. As a final discussion, and being aware of the importance of gender-based violence, we propose an intervention in the educational curricula in order to contribute to the erradication of violence in any form related to speech acts and at the same time we aim to promote respect and tolerance by changing the educational system.
