15. Characterization of fluoride fibers for the Optical Hawaiian Array for Nanoradian Astronomy project

Abstract

We report on the interferometric characterization of a pair of 300 m long single-mode non-polarization-maintaining fibers designed for the Optical Hawaiian Array for Nanoradian Astronomy (‘OHANA) project whose goal is to realize a kilometric near-infrared astronomical array by connecting the large telescopes of the Mauna Kea observatory with single-mode fibers. The fluoride glass fibers are operated in the astronomical K band (2.0–2.4 μm) in which their attenuation is low. We have measured very low differential chromatic dispersion, and the wideband fringe visibility is 0.9 if the two fiber arms have the same temperature. The thermal sensitivity of fibers with respect to their interferometric properties has been studied. The differential chromatic dispersion of the fibers is highly sensitive to the temperature difference. On the contrary, the coherent loss due to mismatch of polarization states is not significantly dependent on the temperature difference. Compensation of thermally induced differential dispersion by use of CaF_2 glass plates is demonstrated.

16. Squared Visibility Estimators: Calibrating Biases to Reach Very High Dynamic Range

Abstract

In the near-infrared, where detectors are limited by readout noise, most interferometers have been operated in wide band in order to benefit from larger photon rates. We analyze in this paper the biases caused by instrumental and turbulent effects to V2 estimators for both narrowband and wideband cases. Visibilities are estimated from samples of the interferogram using two different estimators, Vimg1.gif, which is the classical sum of the squared modulus of Fourier components, and a new estimator Vimg2.gif, for which complex Fourier components are summed prior to taking the square. We present an approach for systematically evaluating the performance and limits of each estimator and for optimizing observing parameters for each. We include the effects of spectral bandwidth, chromatic dispersion, scan length, and differential piston. We also establish the expression of the signal-to-noise ratio of the two estimators with respect to detector and photon noise. The Vimg1.gif estimator is insensitive to dispersion and is always more sensitive than the Vimg2.gif estimator. However, the latter allows us to reach better accuracies when detection is differential piston noise limited. Biases and noise directly impact the dynamic range of reconstructed images. Very high dynamic ranges are required for direct exoplanet detection by interferometric techniques, thus requiring estimators to be bias-free or biases to be accurately calibrated. We discuss which estimator and which conditions are optimum for astronomical applications, especially when high-accuracy visibilities are required. We show that there is no theoretical limit to measuring visibilities with accuracies as good as 10-5, which is important in the prospect of detecting faint exoplanets with interferometers.

17. Geometrical tools to map systems of affine recurrence equations on regular arrays

Abstract

We propose a method based on geometrical tools to map problems onto regular and synchronous processor arrays. The problems we consider are defined by systems of affine recurrence equations (SARE). From such a problem specification we extract the data dependencies in terms of two classes of vectors: the utilization vectors and the dependence vectors. We use these vectors to express constraints on the timing or the allocation functions. We differentiate two classes of constraints. The causal ones are intrinsic timing constraints induced by the system of equations defining the problem. A given choice of target architecture may impose new constraints on the timing or the allocation. We call them the architecture-related constraints. We use these constraints to determine first an affine timing function and next an allocation by projection. We finally illustrate the method with three examples: the matrix multiplication, the recursive convolution and the LLt Cholesky factorization.

18. Calculus of space-optimal mappings of systolic algorithms on processor arrays

We present a method to find mappings of systolic algorithms that use the minimal number of processors. This method is based on geometrical interpretations on the convex polyhedra in Zn. We use our results to derive two space-optimal mappings for the Gaussian elimination algorithm.
