The similarities and differences in the theories of two linguistically trained Hungarian psychoanalysts, Tivadar Thass-Thienemann and Iván Fónagy are presented in this paper. Both men received formal training in Hungary and later emigrated to other countries. Thass-Thienemann of Ungarndeutsch (German-Hungarian) was of Germanist descent with training in classical philology. His interest in psychoanalysis developed extensively after he emigrated from Hungary. Fónagy, on the other hand, was a trained psychoanalyst and a structural linguist, active in both domains while still in Hungary. Both became interested in a psychoanalytic interpretation of language. Thass-Thienemann was particularly interested in etymology, the history of meaning and the process of symbolization. He sought to apply a theory which incorporated sexual motivations in a holistic examination of the lexicon. Fónagy was a committed structuralist, combining Saussure and the Prague School. He attempted to demonstrate the presence of emotional motivations throughout the entirety of the language system. These motivations, he argued, were present at the level of phonetic articulation, lexical, semantic, and syntactic choices. The term double encoding is used by Fónagy to account for this unconscious motivation. Propositional content, the descriptive function of language (the first coding), is always accompanied by the expressive function, a second coding, that is, a second articulation. Comparing the two approaches, Thass-Thienemann shows a preference for a combination of an associative language model with psychoanalytic symbolization, while Fónagy’s is a structural psychoanalytic approach to the use, structure, and origin of language.

This paper will discuss the importance of the work of the contemporary analytic philosopher Daniel Dennett in the empirical sciences from a historical perspective and its impact on psychology in particular. The paper will also delve into his affinities with contemporary cultural changes. Dennett as a philosopher takes natural sciences seriously and, in addition, inspires empirical research himself. Dennett’s most important contributions to the cognitive sciences came from his renewal of the idea of intentionality in the human mind. This proposal has played a central role in the research on primates which was conducted in part to understand the evolutionary origins of our Theory of Mind (ToM). The intentional stance idea was a further, crucial step in the formation of contemporary infancy research studying the emergence of goal-based action interpretation schemata in human babies. Finally, Dennett’s proposal about the hierarchy of physical, design and intentional stances, as well as his selection tower metaphor can be used as tools for organizing the conceptual structure of the history of psychology. This paper specifically shows this relevance regarding the debates about animal teleology, and the relations between behaviorism and cognitivism.

During the period 1960-2010 Hungary went through important social and political changes. Initially these changes had meant for psychology that via the softening of the dictatorship social and human sciences and supportive professions were allowed to (re)appear in the system, and later on psychology and its applications could be diversified. Since the dramatic political changes in 1990, psychology has become a central player. This paper concentrates on institutional developments, using mainly public data.The training of psychologists restarted in 1963 with an integration of applied fields into a 5-year program. This was soon followed by a more theory based reorganization in the 1970s with the formation of a postgraduate system of applied training. Between 1960 and 2010 the single Budapest Eötvös Loránd University with a dozen students was replaced by 7 training universities with a Bologna 3+2-year system, with 800 new undergraduates and 300 MA students each year. This was accompanied by the formation of a PhD system.Regarding research, the most important change in the 1960s was the formation of the Research Institute for Psychology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, with a strong psychophysiology and social psychology profile. From the 1970s on, research has become more and more important at the universities. A notable general change was the appearance of project based financing.In publication practices Westernization appeared first in citations, and from the 1980s it appeared also in publications.

The primary goal of this research was to examine the processing of emotionally valenced and neutral words in the context of bilingualism. The objective was to find out, using an experimental measure of automatic emotional activation, if there were differences in response time in the first and the second language, Hungarian and Serbian respectively. The sample consisted of early Hungarian-Serbian bilinguals, assimilated into the Serbian majority culture.The emotional Stroop task is an experimental paradigm, which has been adapted to measure bilingual population in the past few years. The emotional Stroop interference could be counted from response time latencies, which is usually an effect showing longer responses to negative vs. neutral information.Hungarian and Serbian negatively, positively and neutrally valenced words were used in the research. Our hypothesis was that there would be a similar emotional activation in the first and the second language and that negative words would be processed the longest.The result of the research was a significant main effect of word type, where the negative information captured the attention for a longer period of time than the neutral one. A similar pattern of word processing showed in both languages, there were no significant differences between Hungarian and Serbian reaction times and the interaction between word type and language was not significant. The results suggested that early Hungarian-Serbian bilinguals were equally effective and fast in monitoring emotional information in both of their languages, giving emphasis through more elaborative processing to the threatening stimuli.

The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between verbal short-term memory and the morphological complexity of words. Hungarian, as an agglutinative language, is of special interest for psycholinguistic inquiries in morphology. The authors presented two word-list recall experiments. The recall of the word list was measured by the classical span design. The item lists consisted of two-syllable stems (base words) and two-syllable morphologically complex words (stem+suffix). Within each list the words were of the same length, the same phonological structure (CVCVC), the same frequency and the same concreteness. The same experimental design was used with three-syllable words as well. Results indicated that morphological complexity had a significant negative effect on shortterm memory span, and that memory was better for derived words (e.g., boy+hood) than inflected words (e.g., boy+s), and regular than irregular words.

This paper explores how bidirectional and unidirectional comitative constructions are processed at the level of argument structure. Bidirectional comitative constructions describe events where the two actors undergo the same effect described by the predicate (e.g., John was kissing with Mary), whereas unidirectional comitative constructions describe events in which one of the actors is the agent, and the other one is the patient (e.g., John was messing with Mary). In particular, we used the self-paced reading paradigm to determine if the two constructions access distinct mental representations. The findings suggest that distinct mental representations are activated automatically by bidirectional and unidirectional verbs during online language comprehension.

In two acoustic sentence recognition experiments the relative importance of recognition times (0 to 40 seconds) and relationships between the target sentence and test sentences were varied. Hungarian promised to be a good testing ground for traditional theories that claim that while form is readily forgotten, sentence meaning is preserved. In Hungarian, the informational structure of sentences allows for clear contrasts between neutral and meaning-related order variations. In the stimulus material, target sentences were compared in recognition scores with identical, neutral word order, paraphrased, and focused sentence pairs. The results partly support our starting hypotheses, but partly show that the intricacies of Hungarian sentential syntax call for a more reserved and more carefully qualified expression of the initial proposals of Sachs (1967) and Johnson-Laird and Stevenson (1970). Focused sentences are clearly contrasted with non-focused initial targets even after 40 seconds. It seems that the information structure of Hungarian sentences is somehow maintained in the long-term memory system. In accordance with the classical results, meaning-neutral word order variations are misrecognized in about 60 per cent after 16 seconds already. Contrary to our hypothesis, even after 40 seconds, paraphrases were correctly recognized more than 60 per cent of the time. Thus, to clarify memorial paraphrase equivalence to cross-linguistic validity, more types of sentential paraphrases should be compared. The study supports the main ideas underlying the experiments: the informational structure of the Hungarian sentence seems to be retained in long-term memory, unlike neutral word order variations. This finding calls for a more detailed study with more varied stimulus materials to clarify some further issues of what is ‘form’ and what is ‘meaning’ for the memory system.

A verbális munkamemória feladata a „beszédszerű”információk átmeneti tárolása és frissítése, kapacitásában jelentős egyéni különbségek figyelhetőek meg, amelyek egy sor kognitív funkció működését modulálják. A verbális munkamemória kapacitásának felmérésére számos diagnosztikai eszköz vált széles körben alkalmazottá, de ezek magyar nyelvű változatai eddig csak szórványos kísérleti vizsgálatokban láttak napvilágot. A verbális munkamemória-tárolási és -frissítési komponensei rendkívüli módon érzékenyek az adott információ hosszúságára, kimondási idejére, fonológiai szerveződésére, így az elsősorban angol nyelvű eszközök mutatói csak korlátozottan voltak használhatóak a magyar nyelvű vizsgálatok számára. Kutatócsoportunk ezt a hiányt pótolta, amikor elkészítette a három legismertebb verbális munkamemória-feladat: a számterjedelmi teszt, az álszóteszt és az olvasásterjedelmi teszt magyar nyelvű változatait. Ebben a tanulmányban a feladatsorokkal együtt közreadjuk a feladatokkal kapcsolatos normatív adatokat is.

A Magyar Tudományos Akadémia 2004. évi közgyűlése több olyan külső és tiszteleti tagot választott tagjai sorába, akik pszichológusok vagy közeli szakmai kapcsolatuk van a pszichológiával. Őket mutatjuk be rövid elektronikus interjúkon keresztül. Az interjúkat Pléh Csaba készítette 2004 nyarán.

A dolgozat a katolikus hátterű kora 20. századi magyar pszichológusok szemléletének bemutatásán keresztül a mellett érvel, hogy a magyar kutatók sem egyetlen egységes változatát fogalmazták meg a „katolikus pszichológiának”, hanem különböző módon közelítettek a szaktudományos pszichológia kérdésköréhez. Ugyanakkor az ismertetett szerzők mind a szaktudomány önállósága mellett érveltek, s a modernizációs felhang keretében jellemző rájuk a funkcionalizmus és az arisztotelészi felfogás összekapcsolása, a gondolkodáslélektan előtérbe helyezése, az integratív személyiség felfogás és a gyakorlati funkcionalizmus:a nevelési reform és a gyermekközpontú, a fegyelmező neveléstől eltérő nevelési eszmények meghonosítása. A katolikus szellemi életben megnyilvánuló különböző áramlatok - politikai és eszmei áramlatok - megtalálják a saját helyüket a katolikus pszichológián belül. Fontos mozzanat ezek mögött mai szempontból az a felismerés, hogy nem volt szükségszerű ellentmondás a személyes katolikus meggyőződés, sőt a katolikus értelmiségi szerepvállalás és a modern pszichológia hirdetése, akár a kísérleti pszichológia piedesztálra állítása között. A különböző alternatívákban különböző személyiségek és értékbeli hozzáállások jelennek meg a katolikus táboron belül is.

Abstract: Timed picture naming was compared in seven languages that vary along dimensions known to affect lexical access. Analyses over items focused on factors that determine cross-language universals and cross-language disparities. With regard to universals, number of alternative names had large effects on reaction time within and across languages after target-name agreement was controlled, suggesting inhibitory effects from lexical competitors. For all the languages, word frequency and goodness of depiction had large effects, but objective picture complexity did not. Effects of word structure variables (length, syllable structure, compounding, and initial frication) varied markedly over languages. Strong cross-language correlations were found in naming latencies, frequency, and length. Other-language frequency effects were observed (e.g., Chinese frequencies predicting Spanish reaction times) even after within-language effects were controlled (e.g., Spanish frequencies predicting Spanish reaction times). These surprising cross-language correlations challenge widely held assumptions about the lexical locus of length and frequency effects, suggesting instead that they may (at least in part) reflect familiarity and accessibility at a conceptual level that is shared over languages.

The paper tries to suggest parallels between the study of narrative organization in psychology and the philosophical trends towards a decomposed view of the human mind. It starts off from an analysis of narrative organization in modern memory research. The substantial message of this research from the point of view of narrative studies is threefold: it emphasizes the importance of schematization in memory, as opposed to mere associative structures; it shows that among the possible schemata narrative organization is the most available and most universal one; as to the content of narrative schemata it shows that they are closely tied to our naive theories of human action. In a psychological sense, the cohesion of narratives is tied to their use of intentional attribution. We apply our schemata of human action to understand the plot of narratives. The Hume-Mach style empiricists, and later on modern novelists have been struggling for a long time with the place of Subjects in a totally decomposed vision of the world and the mind. This modern emphasis on a lack of coherence is recently becoming connected to the issue of narrativity in non-trivial ways by philosophers like Daniel Dennett. This trend accepts the idea of decomposing the self and other unifying constructions. However, the human need for coherence is accepted by them, and rather than proposing cohesion based on solid Egos, they propose different varieties of narrative theories regarding the self. These proposals have a strong Humeian flavor with their emphasis on the constructed but useful nature of the self concept. Their intellectual novelty is, however, that they try to find the sources for constructed coherence in narrativity. The paper argues that the philosophical and psychological narrative theories of the self have relevance to the study of literary narratives. Part of modern literature in this regard can be seen as a human experiment in facing the lability and soft construal of human integrity.

A tanulmány áttekinti, hogyan jelentek meg az 1960-as évek végén egymással párhuzamosan azok a felfogások, amelyek a különbségek öröklését, a korai fejlődés jelentőségét s az általában vett genetikai programokat hangsúlyozták. A viselkedésgenetikai és a korai tapasztalással való érvelés egyszerre jelent meg a pszichológiában, s ez adta az intelligencia öröklésével kapcsolatos viták tágabb kontextusát.

Williams syndrome (WMS), a rare neurogenetic disorder, has been inthe forefront of research in cognitive psychology for the last ten years.WMS is characterized by a distinctive cognitive prole: mild to moderate mentalretardation with relatively and surprisingly good linguistic abilities, whileperformance on spatial tasks is extremely poor. Concentrating on the linguisticabilities of children and adolescents with WMS, studies of vocabulary developmentand grammatical development in 15 Hungarian WMS children are presented: childrenwere tested on tasks testing vocabulary, regular and irregular morphological;measures of nonword repetition and digit span were also obtained. In contrastto previous observations, results on the vocabulary task do not show thatuncommon words activated as easily for a WMS child as common ones. Resultsin a picture-naming task support that conforming to the normal pattern, uncommonwords are harder to retrieve. Results on the production of accusative andplural forms conrmed for Hungarian as well that regardless of the frequencyof the item, inected forms of irregulars are harder to produce, and oftenoverregularized in WMS, revealing a dissociation between the rules of grammarvs. the mental lexicon. Performance on rare words in the vocabulary task,and overall performance on the morphology task is associated to the capacityof phonological short-term memory: subjects with higher span perform betteron both tasks. The specication of the close relation between the capacityof phonological short-term memory and their linguistic measures awaits furtherstudy.

A tanulmány célja a rövid távú emlékezeti rendszerek mérőeljárásainak és ezek neuropszichológiai alkalmazhatóságának bemutatása. Számos neuropszichológiai kórkép hátterében megtalálható a munkamemória valamely alrendszerének károsodása, éppen ezért a mérőeljárások diagnosztikai jelentőséggel bírnak. A tanulmány kiemelten foglalkozik Daneman és Carpenter „olvasásterjedelmi” eljárásának bemutatásával, amelynek magyar változatával az elmúlt években számos kutatást végeztünk. Részletesen fogunk szólni a munkamemória verbális információkért felelős alrendszerének széles körben használt mérőeljárásáról, a „nemszó-ismétlési” tesztről, amelyről az utóbbi évek kutatásai kimutatták, hogy jól használható az SLI (Specific Language Impairment) kórkép diagnosztizálásánál. A tanulmány a neuropszichológiai vonatkozásokon felül megpróbálja felvázolni a különböző tesztek és a munkamemória alrendszereinek kapcsolatát, a validitási problémákat, valamint bemutatja mind a hazai, mind a külföldi kutatási eredményeket

This paper reviews the different strategies of using names in the ‘One minute short stories’ of István Örkény, a contemporary innovator of Hungarian prose writing. The main purpose of the case study is to highlight the fact that the use, unuse and abuse of naming in extremely short texts where naming is hardly used for keeping track of the referential chain can become a powerful carrier of the author's meaning. Specifically, naming strategies become means to convey the message that personal identity and authenticity become qustionable in modern life. Some basic strategies identified in the corpus were the following ones: under- and overcharacterization as two devices to convey depersonalization; opposition between oppressor expressed as the opposition between named and unnamed; obtaining a name as the climax of a story; and naming non-human entities as an indicator of the relativity of humanness.
