Purpose: To compare the visual outcomes, postoperative complications, and graft asymmetry between precut and manually dissected donor tissues for Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) procedures, respectively. Methods: Seventy eyes of 70 patients undergoing DSEK/DSAEK at a tertiary eyecare center in eastern India were included in this prospective randomized control study. The 70 eyes were divided equally into two groups. Group A (n = 35) and Group B (n = 35) underwent DSEK and DSAEK procedures, respectively. the operating surgeons prepared the manually dissected corneal grafts using lamellar dissectors. the eye bank technicians prepared the precut corneal grafts using a microkeratome. The patients were investigated postoperatively after 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. The data were compared for visual outcomes [uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical and cylindrical refraction, and spherical equivalent], incidence of postoperative complications, and pachymetry. Results: The mean age was 56.5 (±17.8) years, and the male-to-female ratio was 1.3:1. The most common indications were pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (45.71%, 32/70), failed graft (32.86%, 23/70), and Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (10%, 7/70). The indications for surgery (P = 0.732) and donor (P = 0.258) and host pachymetry (P = 0.986) were comparable between both groups. There was no significant difference in change of UCVA, BCVA, and postoperative refraction (mean spherical refraction, P = 0.849; mean cylindrical refraction, P = 0.516; spherical equivalent, P = 0.518) between the two groups. Postoperative complications like graft detachment (P = 0.179), graft failure (P = 0.513), graft infiltrate (P = 0.428), and endophthalmitis (P = 0.493) were higher in the DSAEK group; however, the difference between the groups was insignificant. The graft asymmetry index was higher in DSAEK than in DSEK; the difference was significant till the 1-month follow-up (P = 0.005). Conclusion: The outcome was similar in both groups. Therefore, manual donor dissection can be an alternative for microkeratome-assisted dissection in low-resource centers and countries to achieve good results. ABSTRACT Background: Virtual reality (VR) refers to a computer-generated simulation or environment that can be experienced and interacted with by a person through special electronic equipment, such as a headset with a screen and motion-tracking sensors. VR has been used as a distraction technique to alleviate pain and discomfort during medical procedures or as an alternative to traditional pain medication. This article explores VR's effectiveness in reducing pain in pediatric patients undergoing painful clinical procedures. Methodology: This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed as per the preferred reporting item for systematic review and meta-analysis guidelines. A systematic literature search was conducted for all articles published till December 2022 in four different databases: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and LILACS, which yielded 6886 studies. Studies showing the effect of VR on pediatric patients undergoing clinical procedures were included in the study. Risk of bias (ROB) 2.0 was used to assess the ROB. Outcome data were pooled using a random-effects model and reported as standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95 confidence interval (CI). The meta-analysis was performed on RevMan5.4. Subgroup analysis was done for the different clinical procedures. Results: A total of 2477 participants from 34 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Children in whom VR was used had a significantly lower pain score as compared to the control group with an SMD of 0.87 (CI 95 -1.20, -0.53; (P < 0.00001). Subgroup analysis based on the type of intervention did not reveal any significant difference (P = 0.19). Heterogeneity for overall pain using a random effect model with I[sup.2] was significant (P < 0.00001). Conclusion: This systematic review suggests that the use of VR distraction in children undergoing painful procedures is associated with significantly lower pain scores. Hence, VR can be a promising intervention for reducing pain experienced by pediatric patients during medical procedures. Purpose: To study the optic nerve head characteristics on optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with papilledema and correlate them with intracranial pressure (ICP). Methods: A retrospective hospital-based study of 46 eyes of 23 patients with bilateral optic disc edema secondary to increased ICP. The clinical profile and the OCT features in terms of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL), ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, and enhanced depth imaging (EDI) B scan images of the optic nerve head were studied and correlated with the ICP. Results: Papilledema was secondary to idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) (n = 20), obstructive hydrocephalus (n = 2), and communicating hydrocephalus (n = 1). The mean ICP in 20 IIH patients was 347 mmH[sub.2]O. The ICP and RNFL thickness in all four quadrants were found to be weakly positively correlated: superior RNFL r (38) = 0.17, P = 0.30, and nasal RNFL r (38) = 0.30, P = 0.05, inferior RNFL r (38) = 0.29, P = 0.07, and temporal RNFL, r (38) = -0.001, P = 0.99. The GCIPL layer thickness and the ICP were weakly negatively correlated in all sectors: superior (38) = -0.23, P = 0.16, superonasal, r (38) = -0.07, P = 0.67, inferonasal r (38) = -0.08, P = 0.64, inferior r (38) = -0.21, P = 0.19, inferotemporal r (38) = -0.23, P = 0.17, superotemporal, r (38) -0.21, P = 0.20. Descriptive features on the B scan, such as peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures and microcystic spaces, were observed most commonly with an ICP of 251-350 mmH[sub.2]O, and the hyperreflective dots in the RNFL layer and Bruch&apos;s membrane inward denting were observed more commonly with an ICP of 351-450 mmH[sub.2]O. Conclusion: The RNFL thickness in all four quadrants had a weak positive correlation, and the GCIPL layer had a weak negative correlation with the ICP. The EDI descriptive features on OCT may vary with ICP. This study examines the application of Laser Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED) to reduce the use of bronze in the manufacturing of worm gears. Addressing the gap in research regarding the L-DED of bronze on steel substrates, the study refines process parameters to improve deposition quality significantly. The approach involves depositing single bronze tracks using various combinations of process parameters, followed by the analysis of cross-sections to evaluate porosity and track cross-section geometry. Building on the optimized parameters identified during single-track experiments, we achieve multi-layer depositions of 3 mm thickness. These layers are then transformed into cylindrical specimens that are subjected to rigorous wear testing in a pin-on-disc setup against a 42CrMo4V counterpart under dry sliding conditions, aimed at investigating debonding and friction characteristics. Additionally, disc-shaped specimens created with the optimized parameters are evaluated under lubricated conditions via a disc-on-disc test, accurately replicating motor gear loading scenarios. Comprehensive assessments of porosity, microstructure, and microhardness are conducted on these specimens. Finally, our findings reveal the potential of DED bronze as a groundbreaking alternative to traditional wrought bronze in gear applications, highlighting its promise for reducing bronze usage in worm gears with an enhanced wear performance.

PurposeTo evaluate the role of topical cyclosporine A 1% (CsA) as an adjuvant therapy in patients with acute Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS).MethodsThis is a randomised controlled trial in which 44 patients (88 eyes) with acute SJS, presenting within 3 months from the onset of the disease, were enrolled and randomised. Group A (n=44 eyes) patients received treatment with topical CsA 1% along with standard therapy consisting of topical corticosteroids, antibiotics and lubricants. Group B (n=44 eyes) patients received topical saline drops in combination with standard therapy. Various ocular surface parameters were assessed at baseline and the 6-month follow-up.ResultsThe mean age of patients (years) was 23.9±15.1 in the CsA group and 26.0±18.7 in the control group (p=0.6840). The mean time from disease onset to presentation (days) was 17.0±14.0 and 12.9±11.3 in CsA and control groups, respectively (p=0.1568). At presentation, the mean grades of severity scores of various parameters were comparable. At 6 months, both groups showed a significant improvement in the mean severity grades of conjunctival hyperaemia (A, p=0.001; B, p=0.0001), mucocutaneous junction involvement (A, p=0.001; B, p=0.0001) and meibomian gland involvement (A, p=0.0471; B, p=0.006). Compared with baseline, the grades of corneal keratinisation (baseline, 0.48±0.7; 6 months, 1.02±0.8; p=0.0015) and neovascularisation (baseline, 1.07±1.2; 6 months, 1.57±1.0; p=0.0412) worsened after 6 months of CsA therapy. Intergroup comparison of grades of various parameters however did not reveal any significant difference at 6 months.ConclusionsAdjuvant treatment with topical CsA is not superior to standard therapy, in cases of acute SJS.

In the present study, we report a methodology for the selective recovery of lithium (Li), cobalt (Co), and graphite contents from the end-of-life (EoL) lithium cobalt oxide (LCO)-based Li-ion batteries (LIBs). The thermal treatment of LIBs black mass at 800 °C for 60 min dissociates the cathode compound and reduces Li content into its carbonates, which results in effective dissolution of the Li content in distilled water at subsequent processing step. The leaching of Co contents is systematically studied in different acid solutions with varying time. It has been observed that maximum leaching efficiency (≥ 99%) of Co can be achieved in 2 h using two molar nitric acid with addition of 10 vol. % of hydrogen peroxide. The graphite content was recovered as the leached residue from the filtration of acid leachate. The cobalt content is precipitated in its oxalate form using oxalic acid which is then converted to oxide by thermal treatment. It was observed that 100 g of studied black mass of LCO type LIBs produces a maximum recovery of ~ 10.3 g of Li2CO3powder, ~ 19.4 g of cobalt oxide (Co3O4), and ~ 38.3 g of graphite powder. The purity of recovered Li2CO3and Co3O4powders is found in good agreement with commercially available materials.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of residual present-day high-grade fertilizers on human physiology. Volumetric and acoustic investigations on aqueous l-ascorbic acid (LAA) have been carried out in the presence of two fertilizers, potassium chloride (KCl) and diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP), to explore and analyze the solvation behavior and molecular interactions occurring in the ternary solutions [LAA + KCl/DAP + water]. Analysis of various volumetric parameters like apparent molar volume (Vϕ), partial molar volume (Vϕ0), and partial molar expansibility (Eϕ0) indicates strong ion–solvent interaction. The magnitudes of Hepler’s constant mark LAA as a structure reformer in aqueous KCl and a structure breaker in aqueous DAP. Negative values of the apparent molar isentropic compressibility (Ks,ϕ) and its value at infinite dilution (Es,ϕ0) show the loss of compressibility of the hydration spheres in comparison to bulk water. Transfer values as well as ion pair and triplet interactions have been evaluated. Hydration numbers have also been assessed by using Passynski’s acoustic technique. Removal of water from solvation spheres by electrolyte ions is proposed. These findings establish the dominance of ion–ion and ion–hydrophilic interactions in the examined systems.

This article introduces a design and method to address the challenge of decreased accuracy in direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation when utilizing planar sparse arrays with closely spaced sensors. It proposes a design leveraging Koch fractal geometry, which effectively reduces mutual coupling and enhances the detection of a greater number of sources compared with the number of sensors in the array. In addition, this article presents a technique that integrates machine learning (ML), specifically combining a deep stacked online sequential random vector functional link network with autoencoder (DSOSRVFLN-AE) and a robust multikernel random vector functional link network (RMKRVFLN), for DOA estimation. This technique involves feature extraction through unsupervised learning and DOA estimation via supervised learning. Results demonstrate superior performance, with a root mean square of 0.02 in 0-dB noisy environment, surpassing other prominent methods in terms of computational efficiency, learning speed, accuracy, and robustness. Similarly, figures depict that for a minimum resolution grid interval of 0.5°, the proposed DSOSRVFLN-AE-RMKRVFLN method estimates DOA with an MAE less than 0.02. The method effectively identifies multiple closely spaced targets (with a minimum angular separation of 0.5°) and is validated through digital architecture implemented on an Xilinx Virtex-5 field-programmable gate array (FPGA), indicating its simplicity and practicality.

The prevalence of atherosclerosis and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is increasing in young Indians (18–50 years of age). However, the characteristics of atherosclerotic plaques in such individuals are poorly understood, presenting distinct challenges for the management of ACS. This study aims to analyze plaque characteristics in young Indian patients with ACS who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging.

AI chips commonly employ SRAM memory as buffers for their reliability and speed, which contribute to high performance. However, SRAM is expensive and demands significant area and energy consumption. Previous studies have explored replacing SRAM with emerging technologies, such as nonvolatile memory, which offers fast read memory access and a small cell area. Despite these advantages, nonvolatile memory’s slow write memory access and high write energy consumption prevent it from surpassing SRAM performance in AI applications with extensive memory access requirements. Some research has also investigated embedded dynamic random access memory (eDRAM) as an area-efficient on-chip memory with similar access times as SRAM. Still, refresh power remains a concern, leaving the trade-off among performance, area, and power consumption unresolved. To address this issue, this article presents a novel mixed CMOS cell memory design that balances performance, area, and energy efficiency for AI memory by combining SRAM and eDRAM cells. We consider the proportion ratio of one SRAM and seven eDRAM cells in the memory to achieve area reduction using mixed CMOS cell memory. In addition, we capitalize on the characteristics of deep neural network (DNN) data representation and integrate asymmetric eDRAM cells to lower energy consumption. To validate our proposed MCAIMem solution, we conduct extensive simulations and benchmarking against traditional SRAM. Our results demonstrate that the MCAIMem significantly outperforms these alternatives in terms of area and energy efficiency. Specifically, our MCAIMem can reduce the area by 48% and energy consumption by $3.4\times $ compared with SRAM designs, without incurring any accuracy loss.

Filamentary keratitis (FK) is a clinical sign of underlying ocular and systemic conditions. FK can cause significant irritation, tearing, and photophobia in the eye. It is a refractory debilitating condition caused by dry eye that affects the day-to-day activities of patients. The etiopathogenesis of FK is not well known; there are numerous predisposing causes. The condition starts as a sub-epithelial or Bowman's membrane dysfunction and leads to the shedding of epithelial cells that take a strand-like form and attach to the cornea. These strands are surrounded by mucin and continue to elongate to become filaments. The filament formation is further aided by the shearing action caused by eyelid movements. Several management approaches, such as addressing the underlying causes of filamentary keratitis, administering copious lubricants, topical corticosteroids, mucolytic agents, bandage contact lenses, punctal plugs, and mechanical removal of filaments are available. The prognosis is fair, and most cases resolve with occasional recurrences. Traditionally FK has been treated with lubricants, mechanical removal, and bandage contact lenses. The newer treatments are topical immunomodulators especially that treat filamentary keratitis associated with aqueous deficient dry eye. The review describes the treatment as well as pathogenesis.

In this paper, we report results from a heuristic usability evaluation we conducted of an active industrial exoskeleton used for enhancing hand grip strength. We focused our usability evaluations on four tasks which are critical for successfully using the exoskeleton—assembly, donning, doffing, and disassembly of the exoskeleton. Seven evaluators used a combination of the Nielsen usability heuristics, and Schneiderman’s golden rules, to find usability problems and rate the severity of the usability violations for the four tasks. Results indicate that the visibility of system status, and error prevention heuristics were violated the most.

In today’s digital landscape, the pervasive use of digital images across diverse domains has led to growing concerns regarding their authenticity and reliability. The potential for malicious manipulation of these images underscores the critical need to develop robust methods for detecting tampering and ensuring their integrity. Fragile watermarking has been found to have extensive applications for tamper detection and recovery. An image watermarking technique for tamper detection, correction, and recovery is presented in this study. The proposed method employs a self-embedding method to generate the reference watermark from the original image, which has the advantage of superior tamper detection, localization, recovery capabilities, and robustness against attacks. Set Partitioning in the Hierarchical Tree (SPIHT) algorithm is applied to generate a reference watermark of the original image. Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) is employed for error correction, providing higher-quality reconstruction to recover the original image. Schur decomposition processed the watermarked image blocks to generate authentication bits for each block to enhance tampering detection. The proposed watermarking method was evaluated using PSNR, SSIM, BER, and NC metrics for grayscale and colored images. The technique demonstrated high robustness in tamper detection and recovery against various malicious attacks. Comparative analysis with existing methods shows the efficacy of the proposed method.

The network's ease of use has brought a copyright dilemma for some multimedia works. It is consequently necessary to develop a safe digital watermarking technology to guarantee the protection of digital work's copyright. The proposed method addresses the pressing need for robust blind digital watermarking technology to safeguard the copyrights of multimedia works in the face of the accessibility provided by modern networks. Two approaches are presented in our research paper. First, a blind Hadamard transform-based method is proposed, leveraging the energy concentration concept inherent in the transform. This technique embeds watermarks into the highest energy coefficients of color host images in the transform domain. Notably, watermark extraction is achieved without accessing the original data. Extensive simulation tests validate the efficacy of this method. Second, we have explored the burgeoning field of chaotic systems in watermarking. An LSB-based strategy, termed the cycling chaos algorithm, is introduced. This approach seamlessly integrates data, into color images using the least significant bits. It employs a cycling chaos function to generate a key for a pseudorandom number generator, which, in turn, determines the intensity and pixel positions for storing privileged data in the original image. Through simulation trials, the significant impact of this method on various performance metrics is demonstrated. These contributions aim to not only address immediate copyright protection challenges but also inspire further exploration and advancement in digital watermarking.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes can enable the safe operation of high energy density lithium metal batteries; unfortunately, they have low ionic conductivity and poor redox stability at electrode interfaces. Fluorinated ether polymer electrolytes are a promising approach because the ether units can solvate and conduct ions, while the fluorinated moieties can increase oxidative stability. However, current perfluoropolyether (PFPE) electrolytes exhibit deficient lithium-ion coordination and ion transport. Here, we incorporate cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) units within the PFPE matrix and increase the polymer blend electrolyte conductivity by 6 orders of magnitude as compared to pure PFPE at 60 °C from 1.55 × 10–11to 2.26 × 10–5S/cm. Blending varying ratios of PEG and PFPE induces microscale phase separation, and we show the impact of morphology on ion solvation and dynamics in the electrolyte. Spectroscopy and simulations show weak ion–PFPE interactions, which promote salt phase segregation into─and ion transport within─the PEG domain. These polymer electrolytes show promise for use in high-voltage lithium metal batteries with improved Li|Li cycling due to enhanced mechanical properties and high-voltage stability beyond 6 V versus Li/Li+. Our work provides insights into transport and stability in fluorinated polymer electrolytes for next-generation batteries.

Silver clusters create the most aesthetic structures compared with other group-11 metal systems, but structural instability often hinders probing their in-depth optoelectronic properties. Assembling these clusters to higher dimensions provides the needed stability and creates a platform to underscore the dimensionality-dependent photophysical properties. Here, we synthesized a one-dimensional ladder-like architecture by interconnecting [Ag10(tBuS)6(CF3COO)6]2–cluster through a 4,4′-trimethylene dipyridine linker. The 1D chains are stacked in an AAAAfashion in the cdirection and an ABABfashion in the adirection to form a three-dimensionally supramolecular extended solid. Steady-state and transient emission experiments probed at room temperature and 77 K showed the presence of triplets with lifetime >50 μs at 77 K and room temperature reverse intersystem crossing. The detailed photophysical study proposed that this one-dimensional assembly acquires a large window of radiative recombination and its dynamics as a function of external stimuli.

Computer-aided diagnosis in health centres detects lung cancer at an early period. The feature set dimensions and over fitting of lung cancer features make it extremely difficult to achieve accuracy in cancer detection. To overcome these issues, in this article, a hybrid recurrent neural network and feed-forward back propagation neural network (Hyb-RNN-FFBPNN) optimized with the glow worm swarm algorithm (GWSA) is proposed for lung cancer prediction (LCP). Initially, input pictures are taken from the dataset of the National Institute of Health (NIH) chest X-ray image using the Kaggle repository for predicting lung cancer. The images are pre-processed utilizing contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization filtering (CLAHEF) approach for removing sounds and enhancing the image quality. These pre-processed images are given to feature extraction. The empirical wavelet transform (EWT) is applied during feature extraction. Then, the hybrid FFBPNN is constructed for classifying the extracted features into benign, malignant, and normal. The proposed Hyb-RNN-FFBPNN approach does not exhibit any optimization methods adoption to determine optimal parameters and assure proper lung cancer prediction. Therefore, the hyperparameter of Hyb-RNN-FFBPNN is tuned along glowworm swarm optimization approach (GSOA), which classifies lung cancer exactly. The proposed technique is activated in MATLAB; its performance is analysed to the other existing techniques.

ABSTRACTAquaporins (AQPs) are small integral membrane proteins that facilitate the efficient transport of small solutes like water, metalloids, urea, and CO2 across the membrane. Plant aquaporins are known to be involved in vital physiological processes like seed germination, stomatal movement, cell elongation, and reproductive growth. In the present study, 36 AQPs were identified through genome-wide computational analysis performed in the rose genome. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis classified the AQPs into five subfamilies, including 10 Plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs), 8 Tonoplast intrinsic proteins (TIPs), 9 Nodulin intrinsic proteins (NIPs), 3 Small intrinsic proteins (SIPs), and 6 uncharacterised intrinsic proteins (XIPs). Based on the prediction of silicon solute specificity, one of the NIPs is predicted to be a silicon transporter. Structural analysis revealed the characteristic six trans-membrane domains and two-half alpha helix harbouring two conserved NPA motifs in the majority of the predicted AQPs. The protein tertiary structures predicted with homology-based modelling were used to study the pore lining remains and to predict the solute transport activity of the AQPs. Expression profiling of the rose AQPs showed tissue-specific expression of many members. The data provided here will help in understanding the AQP-based solute transport system in roses and other related species.
