We analyze the redshift suffered by photons originating from an external source, traversing a collapsing dust cloud, and finally being received by an asymptotic observer. In addition, we study the shadow that the collapsing cloud casts on the sky of the asymptotic observer. We find that the resulting redshift and properties of the shadow depend crucially on whether the final outcome of the complete gravitational collapse is a black hole or a naked singularity. In the black hole case, the shadow is due to the high redshift acquired by the photons as they approach the event horizon, implying that their energy is gradually redshifted toward zero within a few crossing times associated with the event horizon radius. In contrast to this, a naked singularity not only absorbs photons originating from the source, but it also emits infinitely redshifted photons with and without angular momenta. This emission introduces an abrupt cutoff in the frequency shift of the photons detected in directions close to the radial one, and it is responsible for the shadow masking the source in the naked singularity case. Furthermore, even though the shadow forms and begins to grow immediately after the observer crosses the Cauchy horizon, it takes many more crossing times than in the black hole case for the source to be occulted from the observer's eyes. We discuss possible implications of our results for testing the weak cosmic censorship hypothesis. Even though at late times the image of the source perceived by the observer looks the same in both cases, the dynamical formation of the shadow and the redshift images has distinct features and time scales in the black hole versus the naked singularity case. For stellar collapse, these time scales seem to be too short to be resolved with existing technology. We analyze the frequency shift of photons propagating on an asymptotically flat spacetime describing a collapsing, spherical dust cloud. We focus on the case where the interaction of the photons with the matter can be neglected. Under fairly general assumptions on the initial data characterizing the collapse, we show that photons with zero angular momentum which travel from past to future null infinity, crossing the collapsing cloud through its center, are always redshifted with respect to stationary observers. We compute this redshift as a function of proper time of a distant stationary observer and discuss its dependency on the mass distribution of the cloud. Possible implications of this redshift effect for weak cosmic censorship and light propagation in cosmological spacetimes are also briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new evolution system for Einstein's field equations which is based on tetrad fields and conformally compactified hyperboloidal spatial hypersurfaces which reach future null infinity. The boost freedom in the choice of the tetrad is fixed by requiring that its timelike leg be orthogonal to the foliation, which consists of constant mean curvature slices. The rotational freedom in the tetrad is fixed by the 3D Nester gauge. With these conditions, the field equations reduce naturally to a first-order constrained symmetric hyperbolic evolution system which is coupled to elliptic equations for the gauge variables. The conformally rescaled equations are given explicitly, and their regularity at future null infinity is discussed. Our formulation is potentially useful for high accuracy numerical modeling of gravitational radiation emitted by inspiraling and merging black hole binaries and other highly relativistic isolated systems. We construct exact solutions to the Bianchi equations on a flat spacetime background. When the constraints are satisfied, these solutions represent in- and outgoing linearized gravitational radiation. We then consider the Bianchi equations on a subset of flat spacetime of the form [0, T] × BR, where BRis a ball of radius R, and analyse different kinds of boundary conditions on ?BR. Our main results are as follows. (i) We give an explicit analytic example showing that boundary conditions obtained from freezing the incoming characteristic fields to their initial values are not compatible with the constraints. (ii) With the help of the exact solutions constructed, we determine the amount of artificial reflection of gravitational radiation from constraint-preserving boundary conditions which freeze the Weyl scalar ?0to its initial value. For monochromatic radiation with wave number kand arbitrary angular momentum number ? 2, the amount of reflection decays as (kR)?4for large kR. (iii) For each L? 2, we construct new local constraint-preserving boundary conditions which perfectly absorb linearized radiation with ? L. (iv) We generalize our analysis to a weakly curved background of mass Mand compute first-order corrections in M/Rto the reflection coefficients for quadrupolar odd-parity radiation. For our new boundary condition with L= 2, the reflection coefficient is smaller than that for the freezing ?0boundary condition by a factor of M/Rfor kR> 1.04. Implications of these results for numerical simulations of binary black holes on finite domains are discussed.

We discuss the initial-boundary value problem of general relativity. Previous considerations for a toy model problem in electrodynamics motivate the introduction of a variational principle for the lapse with several attractive properties. In particular, we show that the resulting elliptic gauge condition for the lapse together with a suitable condition for the shift and constraint-preserving boundary conditions controlling the Weyl scalar ?0yields a prioriestimates on the metric, connection and curvature fields. These estimates are expected to be useful for obtaining a well-posed initial-boundary value problem for metric formulations of Einstein's field equations which are commonly used in numerical relativity. To present a simple and explicit example, we consider the 3 + 1 decomposition introduced by York of the field equations on a cubic domain with two periodic directions and prove in the weak field limit that our gauge condition for the lapse, an a priorispecified shift vector and our boundary conditions lead to a well-posed problem. The method discussed here is quite general and should also yield well-posed problems for different ways of writing the evolution equations, including first-order symmetric hyperbolic or mixed first-order second-order formulations. Well-posed initial-boundary value formulations for the linearization about arbitrary stationary configurations will be presented elsewhere.

We discuss finite difference techniques for hyperbolic equations in non-trivial domains, as those that arise when simulating black-hole spacetimes. In particular, we construct dissipative and difference operators that satisfy the summation by partsproperty in domains with excised multiple cubic regions. This property can be used to derive semi-discrete energy estimates for the associated initial-boundary value problem which in turn can be used to prove numerical stability.

We use rigorous techniques from numerical analysis of hyperbolic equations in bounded domains to construct stable finite-difference schemes for numerical relativity, in particular for their use in black-hole excision. As an application, we present 3D simulations of a scalar field propagating in a Schwarzschild black-hole background.

Generalizing previous work we propose how to superpose spinning black holes in a Kerr–Schild initial slice. This superposition satisfies several physically meaningful limits, including the close and the far ones. Further, we consider the close limit of two black holes with opposite angular momenta and explicitly solve the constraint equations in this case. Evolving the resulting initial data with a linear code, we compute the radiated energy as a function of the masses and the angular momenta of the black holes.

The choked accretion model consists of a purely hydrodynamical mechanism in which, by setting an equatorial to polar density contrast, a spherically symmetric accretion flow transitions to an inflow-outflow configuration. This scenario has been studied in the case of a (nonrotating) Schwarzschild black hole as central accretor, as well as in the nonrelativistic limit. In this article, we generalize these previous works by studying the accretion of a perfect fluid onto a (rotating) Kerr black hole. We first describe the mechanism by using a steady-state, irrotational analytic solution of an ultrarelativistic perfect fluid, obeying a stiff equation of state. We then use hydrodynamical numerical simulations in order to explore a more general equation of state. Analyzing the effects of the black hole's rotation on the flow, we find in particular that the choked accretion inflow-outflow morphology prevails for all possible values of the black hole's spin parameter, showing the robustness of the model. It is shown that a collisionless, relativistic kinetic gas configuration propagating in the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole undergoes a relaxation process and eventually settles down to a stationary, axisymmetric configuration surrounding the black hole. The underlying mechanism for this relaxation process is due to phase space mixing, which implies that although the one-particle distribution function f satisfying the collisionless Boltzmann equation is quasiperiodic in time, the associated macroscopic observables computed from averages over f possess well-defined limits as time goes to infinity. The final state of the gas is described by an effective distribution function depending only upon the constants of motion, and it can be determined by an appropriate average of the initial distribution function. Motivated by the goal for high accuracy modeling of gravitational radiation emitted by isolated systems, recently, there has been renewed interest in the numerical solution of the hyperboloidal initial value problem for Einstein's field equations in which the outer boundary of the numerical grid is placed at null infinity. In this article, we numerically implement the tetrad-based approach presented by Bardeen, Sarbach, and Buchman [Phys. Rev. D 83, 104045 (2011)] for a spherically symmetric, minimally coupled, self-gravitating scalar field. When this field is massless, the evolution system reduces to a regular, first-order symmetric hyperbolic system of equations for the conformally rescaled scalar field which is coupled to a set of singular elliptic constraints for the metric coefficients. We show how to solve this system based on a numerical finite-difference approximation, obtaining stable numerical evolutions for initial black hole configurations which are surrounded by a spherical shell of scalar field, part of which disperses to infinity and part of which is accreted by the black hole. As a nontrivial test, we study the tail decay of the scalar field along different curves, including one along the marginally trapped tube, one describing the world line of a timelike observer at a finite radius outside the horizon, and one corresponding to a generator of null infinity. Our results are in perfect agreement with the usual power-law decay discussed in previous work. This article also contains a detailed analysis for the asymptotic behavior and regularity of the lapse, conformal factor, extrinsic curvature and the Misner-Sharp mass function along constant mean curvature slices. Many evolution problems in physics are described by partial differential equations on an infinite domain; therefore, one is interested in the solutions to such problems for a given initial dataset. A prominent example is the binary black-hole problem within Einstein’s theory of gravitation, in which one computes the gravitational radiation emitted from the inspiral of the two black holes, merger and ringdown. Powerful mathematical tools can be used to establish qualitative statements about the solutions, such as their existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence on the initial data, or their asymptotic behavior over large time scales. However, one is often interested in computing the solution itself, and unless the partial differential equation is very simple, or the initial data possesses a high degree of symmetry, this computation requires approximation by numerical discretization. When solving such discrete problems on a machine, one is faced with a finite limit to computational resources, which leads to the replacement of the infinite continuum domain with a finite computer grid. This, in turn, leads to a discrete initial-boundary value problem. The hope is to recover, with high accuracy, the exact solution in the limit where the grid spacing converges to zero with the boundary being pushed to infinity.

We study spherical and nonspherical linear acoustic perturbations of the Michel flow, which describes the steady radial accretion of a perfect fluid into a nonrotating black hole. The dynamics of such perturbations are governed by a scalar wave equation on an effective curved background geometry determined by the acoustic metric, which is constructed from the spacetime metric and the particle density and four-velocity of the fluid. For the problem under consideration in this paper the acoustic metric has the same qualitative features as an asymptotically flat, static and spherically symmetric black hole, and thus it represents a natural astrophysical analogue black hole. As for the case of a scalar field propagating on a Schwarzschild background, we show that acoustic perturbations of the Michel flow exhibit quasinormal oscillations. Based on a new numerical method for determining the solutions of the radial mode equation, we compute the associated frequencies and analyze their dependency on the mass of the black hole, the radius of the sonic horizon and the angular momentum number. Our results for the fundamental frequencies are compared to those obtained from an independent numerical Cauchy evolution, finding good agreement between the two approaches. When the radius of the sonic horizon is large compared to the event horizon radius, we find that the quasinormal frequencies scale approximately like the surface gravity associated with the sonic horizon. We present a new covariant, gauge-invariant formalism describing linear metric perturbation fields on any spherically symmetric background in general relativity. The advantage of this formalism relies in the fact that it does not require a decomposition of the perturbations into spherical tensor harmonics. Furthermore, it does not assume the background to be vacuum, nor does it require its staticity. In the particular case of vacuum perturbations, we derive two master equations describing the propagation of arbitrary linear gravitational waves on a Schwarzschild black hole. When decomposed into spherical harmonics, they reduce to covariant generalizations of the well-known Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations. Next, we discuss the general case where the metric perturbations are coupled to matter fields and derive a new constrained wave system describing the propagation of three gauge-invariant scalars from which the complete metric perturbations can be reconstructed. We apply our formalism to the Einstein-Euler system, dividing the fluid perturbations into two parts. The first part, which decouples from the metric perturbations, obeys simple advection equations along the background flow and describes the propagation of the entropy and the vorticity. Recently, there has been quite a lot of interest in static, spherical wormhole spacetimes and the question of their stability with respect to time-dependent perturbations. The consideration of linearized perturbations usually leads to a master wave equation with effective potential, which can then be analyzed using standard tools from quantum mechanics. However, in the wormhole case, particular care must be taken with the gauge conditions when formulating the master equation. A poor coordinate choice, based for example on fixing the areal radial coordinate, may lead to singularities at the throat, which complicate the stability analysis, or might even lead to erroneous conclusions regarding the stability of the underlying wormhole configuration. In this work, we present a general method for deriving a gauge-invariant wave system of linearized perturbation equations in the spherically symmetric case, assuming that the matter supporting the wormhole is a phantom scalar field--that is, a self-interacting scalar field whose kinetic energy has the reversed sign. We show how this system can be decoupled and reduced to a single master wave equation with a regular potential, with no intermediate steps involving singularities at the throat. Two applications of our formalism are given. First, we rederive the master equation for the linearly perturbed Ellis-Bronnikov wormhole using our new, singularity-free method. As a second application, we derive the master equation describing the linear perturbations of a certain anti-de Sitter wormhole, provide a detailed analysis of the spectral properties of the underlying operator, and prove that, as in the Ellis-Bronnikov case, this wormhole is linearly unstable and possesses a single unstable mode. In the final part of the paper, we consider a wormhole with de Sitter-type ends, whose spacetime presents horizons and admits a nonstatic extension beyond them; for this system, we derive partial results of linear instability. Using the Green's function representation technique, the late time behavior of localized scalar field distributions on Schwarzschild spacetimes is studied. Assuming arbitrary initial data we perform a spectral analysis, computing the amplitude of each excited quasibound mode without the necessity of performing dynamical evolutions. The resulting superposition of modes is compared with a traditional numerical evolution with excellent agreement: therefore, we have an efficient way to determine final black hole wigs. The astrophysical relevance of the quasibound modes is discussed in the context of scalar field dark matter models and the axiverse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new fully first-order strongly hyperbolic representation of the Baumgarte-Shapiro- Shibata-Nakamura formulation of Einstein's equations with optional constraint damping terms. We describe the characteristic fields of the system, discuss its hyperbolicity properties, and present two numerical implementations and simulations: one using finite differences, adaptive mesh refinement, and, in particular, binary black holes, and another one using the discontinuous Galerkin method in spherical symmetry. The results of this paper constitute a first step in an effort to combine the robustness of Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura evolutions with very high accuracy numerical techniques, such as spectral collocation multidomain or discontinuous Galerkin methods. Classical scalar fields have been proposed as possible candidates for the dark matter component of the universe. Given the fact that supermassive black holes seem to exist at the center of most galaxies, in order to be a viable candidate for the dark matter halo a scalar field configuration should be stable in the presence of a central black hole, or at least be able to survive for cosmological time scales. In the present work we consider a scalar field as a test field on a Schwarzschild background, and study under which conditions one can obtain long-lived configurations. We present a detailed study of the Klein-Gordon equation in the Schwarzschild space-time, both from an analytical and numerical point of view, and show that indeed there exist quasistationary solutions that can remain surrounding a black hole for large time scales. The accretion of a spherically symmetric, collisionless kinetic gas cloud onto a Schwarzschild black hole is analyzed. Whereas previous studies have treated this problem by specifying boundary conditions at infinity, here the properties of the gas are given at a sphere of finite radius. The corresponding steady-state solutions are computed using four different models with an increasing level of sophistication, starting with the purely radial infall of Newtonian particles and culminating with a fully general relativistic calculation in which individual particles have angular momentum. The resulting mass accretion rates are analyzed and compared with previous models, including the standard Bondi model for a hydrodynamic flow. We apply our models to the supermassive black holes Sgr A* and M87*, and we discuss how their low luminosity could be partially explained by a kinetic description involving angular momentum. Furthermore, we get results consistent with previous model-dependent bounds for the accretion rate imposed by rotation measures of the polarized light coming from Sgr A* and with estimations of the accretion rate of M87* from the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration. Our methods and results could serve as a first approximation for more realistic black hole accretion models in various astrophysical scenarios in which the accreted material is expected to be nearly collisionless. It has long been known that no static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Klein-Gordon scalar field configuration surrounding a nonrotating black hole can exist in general relativity. In a series of previous papers, we proved that, at the effective level, this no-hair theorem can be circumvented by relaxing the staticity assumption: for appropriate model parameters, there are quasibound scalar field configurations living on a fixed Schwarzschild background which, although not being strictly static, have a larger lifetime than the age of the universe. This situation arises when the mass of the scalar field distribution is much smaller than the black hole mass, and following the analogies with the hair in the literature we dubbed these long-lived field configurations wigs. Here we extend our previous work to include the gravitational backreaction produced by the scalar wigs. We derive new approximate solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Klein-Gordon system which represent self-gravitating scalar wigs surrounding black holes. These configurations interpolate between boson star configurations and Schwarzschild black holes dressed with the long-lived scalar test field distributions discussed in previous papers. Nonlinear numerical evolutions of initial data sets extracted from our approximate solutions support the validity of our approach. Arbitrarily large lifetimes are still possible, although for the parameter space that we analyze in this paper they seem to decay faster than the quasibound states.
