The burgeoning population of Taipei, Taiwan, has led to a threefold increase in the number of cars running the streets of the city. Consequently, traffic congestion, pollution and the lack of transportation facilities have plagued its residents. To improve the situation, the Taiwanese government has initiated the $17.4 billion Taipei Rapid Transit Systems (TRT) project. The TRT network will cover 110.9 miles and its first phase will be completed by 1998. With 47.3 miles of rail planned for its first phase, the TRT will run at a speed of 56 mph and carry 50,000 passengers per hour per direction.

East Asia has experienced long‐term warming and drying in the twentieth century. However, a phenomenon known as the “warming hiatus” changed the trend of enhanced soil drying over East Asia. In contrast to the previous long‐term drying in the last century, time series of soil moisture showed a shift from a downtrend to uptrend around 2005, and prominent wetting was located in the northeast (semiarid and dry subhumid regions) and southeast of China (extreme humid regions). Our results illustrated that such abrupt change in soil moisture was closely related to the change of warming during hiatus. The warming hiatus played a more important role in decadal soil wetting over these semiarid and dry subhumid regions, compared to relatively limited influence of surface atmosphere temperature over humid regions. The weakened drying during the hiatus decade suggests that the response of wetting/drying to climate in drylands is closely related to decadal surface atmosphere temperature, which will deepen our understanding of the mechanism on the role of surface atmosphere temperature in the process of wetting/drying in drylands over different time scales. Earthquakes induced during hydraulic fracturing operations have occurred in a number of locales. However, in situ studies aimed to discern the triggering mechanism remain exclusively statistical in their nature. Here we calculate the fault slip tendencies of 11 hydraulic fracturing induced earthquakes in a historically aseismic area using a recently constructed quantitative model for the in‐situ stresses. It is shown that the ambient pore pressures of the nearby Duvernay unconventional reservoirs can provide enough ΔPftriggering fault movement. The local fluid pressures acting on the fault could readily be increased above the critical value if hydraulic connection exists between the fault and a propagating hydraulic fracture. The critical pressures necessary to induce slip are estimated using a probabilistic model that incorporates uncertainties of stress and fault's mechanical properties. These critical pressures are greater than the expected hydrostatic pressure but less the pore pressures of nearby unconventional reservoirs. Hydraulic fracturing operations within the Duvernay Formation, a major hydrocarbon source rock in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, have been linked to induced earthquakes primarily on the basis of statistical analysis. Here we attempt to examine whether faults in the area are prone to slip, causing earthquakes, using well‐constrained values for the state of stress in the Earth's crust at the locations of the induced earthquakes. Perhaps most interestingly, the fault planes, along which slip occurred, could not have remained immobile if the fluid pressures directly acting on the faults are the same as the anomalously high pore fluid pressures measured within the Duvernay Formation itself. However, the faults have been historically quiescent and this suggests that the fluid pressures acting on them must be lower. This might be accomplished if pressures are relieved by fluid migration to overlying hydrocarbon reservoirs. Further, this suggests that the earthquakes are triggered by elevated fluid pressures communicated to the preexisting faults. We use extreme value theory to develop point process statistical models relating the probability of extreme winter particulate pollution events in Beijing (“winter haze”) to local meteorological variables. The models are trained with the 2009–2017 record of fine particulate matter concentrations (PM2.5) from the U.S. embassy. We find that 850‐hPa meridional wind velocity (V850) and relative humidity successfully predict the probability for 24‐hr average PM2.5to exceed 300 μg/m3(95th percentile of the frequency distribution) as well as higher thresholds. We apply the point process models to mid‐21st century climate projections from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 model ensemble under two radiative forcing scenarios (RCP8.5 and RCP4.5). We conclude that 21st century climate change alone is unlikely to increase the frequency of severe PM2.5pollution events (PM2.5> 300 μg/m3) in Beijing and is more likely to marginally decrease the probability of such events. We use extreme value theory, a branch of statistics concerned with outliers and unusual events, to develop a model relating the probability of extreme pollution events in Beijing to local weather variables. Haze in Beijing is worst in the winter, so we restrict our study to December, January, and February. We train our models with the 2009–2017 record of fine particulate matter concentrations measured at the U.S. embassy, a pollutant behind many of these haze events. We find that north‐south wind velocity and relative humidity successfully predict days when daily mean particulate matter concentrations will exceed a threshold of 300 μg/m3. We apply our statistical models to mid‐21st century climate projections under two scenarios: business‐as‐usual emissions and significant reduction in emissions. We find that the frequency of haze events is most likely to decrease because of climate change, driven mainly by a decrease in relative humidity. This result illustrates the importance of including humidity in estimates of future fine particulate matter concentrations. We study unconventional superconductivity in exfoliated single crystals of a promising three-dimensional (3D) topological superconductor candidate, Nb-doped Bi2Se3through differential conductance spectroscopy and magneto-transport. The strong anisotropy of the critical field along the out-of-plane direction suggests that the thin exfoliated flakes are in the quasi-2D limit. Normal metal-superconductor (NS) contacts with either high or low transparencies made by depositing gold leads onto Nb-doped Bi2Se3flakes both show significant enhancement in zero bias conductance and coherence dips at the superconducting energy gap. Such behavior is inconsistent with conventional Blonder–Tinkham–Klapwijk theory. Instead, we discuss how our results are consistent with p-wave pairing symmetry, supporting the possibility of topological superconductivity in Nb-doped Bi2Se3. Finally, we observe signatures of multiple superconducting energy gaps, which could originate from multiple Fermi surfaces reported earlier in bulk crystals.

The amyloid-β protein (Aβ) protein plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It is believed that Aβ deposited in the brain originates from the brain tissue itself. However, Aβ is generated in both brain and peripheral tissues. Whether circulating Aβ contributes to brain AD-type pathologies remains largely unknown. In this study, using a model of parabiosis between APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic AD mice and their wild-type littermates, we observed that the human Aβ originated from transgenic AD model mice entered the circulation and accumulated in the brains of wild-type mice, and formed cerebral amyloid angiopathy and Aβ plaques after a 12-month period of parabiosis. AD-type pathologies related to the Aβ accumulation including tau hyperphosphorylation, neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation and microhemorrhage were found in the brains of the parabiotic wild-type mice. More importantly, hippocampal CA1 long-term potentiation was markedly impaired in parabiotic wild-type mice. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to reveal that blood-derived Aβ can enter the brain, form the Aβ-related pathologies and induce functional deficits of neurons. Our study provides novel insight into AD pathogenesis and provides evidence that supports the development of therapies for AD by targeting Aβ metabolism in both the brain and the periphery.

Chronic inflammation is the primary cause of gastric cancer (GC). NLRP3, as an important inflammasome component, has crucial roles in initiating inflammation. However, the potential roles of NLRP3 in GC is unknown. Here, we show that NLRP3 expression is markedly upregulated in GC, which promotes NLRP3 inflammasome activation and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) secretion in macrophages. In addition, NLRP3 binds to cyclin-D1 (CCND1) promoter and promotes its transcription in gastric epithelial cells. Consequently, NLRP3 enhances epithelial cells proliferation and GC tumorigenesis. Furthermore, we identify miR-22, which is constitutively expressed in gastric mucosa, as a suppressor of NLRP3. MiR-22 directly targets NLRP3 and attenuates its oncogenic effects in vitro and in vivo. However, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection suppresses miR-22 expression, while enhances NLRP3 expression, and that triggers uncontrolled proliferation of epithelial cells and the emergence of GC. Thus, our research describes a mechanism by which miR-22 suppresses NLRP3 and maintains homeostasis of gastric microenvironments and suggests miR-22 as a potential target for the intervention of GC.

Heterochromatin protein 1γ (HP1γ) has been implicated in carcinogenesis of various cancer types. However, the role of HP1γ in prostate cancer (PCa) progression and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. We found that HP1γ is upregulated in PCa and elevated levels of HP1γ in PCa predict poor outcome. In addition, depletion of HP1γ in PCa cells not only repressed proliferation and induced apoptosis but also impaired tumorigenicity. We also found that c-Myc was capable of upregulating HP1γ by directly binding to the E-box element in the first intron of HP1γ gene, and the upregulated HP1γ, in turn, repressed the expression of miR-451a by enhancing H3K9 methylation at the promoter region of miR-451a. Furthermore, reduction of miR-451a significantly reversed HP1γ loss-induced PCa cell apoptosis, whereas miR-451a overexpression repressed cell survival by targeting and downregulating c-Myc. The association among c-Myc, HP1γ and miR-451a was further confirmed in human clinical samples. Therefore, we propose that an HP1γ/miR-451a/c-Myc regulatory circuitry exists in PCa cells and this circuit has a crucial role in PCa progression.

Recent achievements in the construction of graphene-based materials with superwetting properties have been developed and received significant research attention. Deeply understanding and effectively controlling the wettability of graphene-based materials is crucial for its fundamental research and functional application. Therefore, in this review, after a brief introduction to the intrinsic wettability of graphene and graphene oxide (GO). The strategies for manipulating the wettability of graphene-based materials to achieve superwetability are summarized and discussed, including chemical composition regulation and multiscale structure construction. Then, we also propose a framework for the promising applications of graphene-based superwetting materials in oil-water separation, droplet manipulation, self-cleaning coatings and energy-related applications. Finally, we provide our views and recommendations on the challenges and future research directions in this emerging and promising research field.

Polycomb group (PcG) proteins play an important role in development and stem cell maintenance, and their dysregulation have been closely linked to oncogenesis and cancer stem cell phenotypes. Here, we found that nervous system polycomb 1 (NSPc1) was highly expressed in stem cell-like glioma cells (SLCs). Knockdown of NSPc1 in SLCs resulted in impaired neurosphere formation and self-renewal abilities, down-regulated expression of stemness markers such as NESTIN, CD133 and SOX2, and decreased capacity to propagate subcutaneous xenografts. In contrast, glioma cells overexpressing NSPc1 exhibited a stem cell-like phenotype, up-regulated expression of stemness markers NESTIN, CD133 and SOX2, and an enhanced capacity to propagate subcutaneous xenografts. Furthermore, we identified that NSPc1 epigenetically repressed the expression of retinol dehydrogenase 16 (RDH16) by directly binding to a region upstream (−1073 to −823) of the RDH16 promoter. Next, we confirmed that RDH16 is a stemness suppressor that partially rescues SLCs from the NSPc1-induced increase in neurosphere formation. Finally, we showed that ATRA partly reversed the NSPc1-induced stemness enhancement in SLCs, through mechanisms correlated with an ATRA-dependent decrease in the expression of NSPc1. Thus, our results demonstrate that NSPc1 promotes cancer stem cell self-renewal by repressing the synthesis of ATRA via targeting RDH16 and may provide novel targets for glioma treatment in the future.

PurposeThe purpose of the study was to investigate nailfold microvascular morphology in exfoliation syndrome with or without glaucoma (XFS/XFG) compared with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and control subjects using nailfold capillary videomicroscopy.Patients and methodsWe used a JH-1004 capillaroscope to perform nailfold capillary videomicroscopy on the fourth and fifth digit of the non-dominant hand. We enrolled 56 XFS/XFG patients, 87 POAG patients, and 75 control subjects. Masked observers graded the videos for hemorrhages, avascular zones ≥200 microns (μm), and degree of microvascular tortuosity on a four-point subjective scale. Multivariable odds ratios, 95% confidence intervals and P-for trends for assessing the relation between morphological changes and POAG or XFS/XFG were obtained from logistic regression analyses. We also assessed this relation with XFS/XFG compared with POAG in multivariable models.ResultsAfter adjusting for multiple covariates, nailfold hemorrhages, avascular zones ≥200 μm, and higher degree of vascular tortuosity were more common in XFS/XFG vs controls (P-for trend ≤0.0001) and in POAG vs controls (P-for trend ≤0.01). For each 100 capillaries, the number of hemorrhages was similar (P-for trend=0.91) between XFS/XFG and POAG patients; however, there were more avascular zones per 100 capillaries with borderline significance (P-for trend=0.04) in the XFS/XFG group. XFS/XFG patients had more tortuosity than POAG patients; specifically, having a tortuosity score ≥1.5 was associated with a 4.4-fold increased odds of XFS/XFG (95% confidence interval: 1.5–13.3) relative to a tortuosity score <1.0 (P-for trend=0.005).ConclusionA high degree of nailfold capillary tortuosity is a distinct non-ocular feature associated with XFS/XFG compared with either POAG or controls.

Evaporative Ducts (ED) are common refractive features that exist due to the persistent/strong vertical moisture gradient inherent to the lowest 10s of meters of the marine atmospheric surface layer (MASL). The ED plays a large role in the propagation of signals from the surface‐ or ship‐based radar/communications systems due to the ducting of electromagnetic (EM) waves. Previous studies have characterized ED structure using mesoscale and surface layer models which are based on the Monin‐Obukhov similarity theory. As a result, only the spatially/temporally averaged mean ED structure has been examined. Conversely, this study focuses on ED variability occurring over turbulent energy‐containing eddy scales by utilizing large‐eddy simulations (LES) of the MASL. This innovative approach reveals that the LES‐resolved refractivity perturbations are directly linked to MASL large eddy dynamic and thermodynamic processes. In the thermally unstable MASL, significant turbulent ED variability is noted, with regions of increased ED heights associated with convective updrafts and positive moisture perturbations. In contrast, the thermally stable MASL is shown to exhibit significantly less ED variability over the LES domain. Since current surface layer models have difficulties in calculating ED properties in the thermally stable MASL, utilization of LES is helpful to gain an understanding of the ED in these conditions. A conceptual model of turbulent ED variation is proposed to describe the relationship between MASL dynamics/thermodynamic processes, state variable perturbations, and refractive variations. Schizophrenia is a widespread mental disease with a prevalence of about 1% in the world population. Continuous long-term treatment is required to maintain social functioning and prevent symptom relapse of schizophrenia patients. However, there are considerable individual differences in response to the antipsychotic drugs. There is a pressing need to identify more drug-response-related markers. But most pharmacogenomics of schizophrenia have typically focused on a few candidate genes in small sample size. In this study, 995 subjects were selected for discovering the drug-response-related markers. A total of 77 single-nucleotide polymorphisms of 25 genes have been investigated for four commonly used antipsychotic drugs in China: risperidone, clozapine, quetiapine, and chlorpromazine. Significant associations with treatment response for several genes, such as CYP2D6, CYP2C19, COMT, ABCB1, DRD3and HTR2Chave been verified in our study. Also, we found several new candidate genes (TNIK, RELN, NOTCH4and SLC6A2) and combinations (haplotype rs1544325–rs5993883–rs6269–rs4818 in COMT) that are associated with treatment response to the four drugs. Also, multivariate interactions analysis demonstrated the combination of rs6269 in COMTand rs3813929 in HTR2Cmay work as a predictor to improve the clinical antipsychotic response. So our study is of great significance to improve current knowledge on the pharmacogenomics of schizophrenia, thus promoting the implementation of personalized medicine in schizophrenia.

We develop a statistical model using extreme value theory to estimate the 2000–2050 changes in ozone episodes across the United States. We model the relationships between daily maximum temperature (Tmax) and maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) ozone in May–September over 2003–2012 using a Point Process (PP) model. At ~20% of the sites, a marked decrease in the ozone‐temperature slope occurs at high temperatures, defined as ozone suppression. The PP model sometimes fails to capture ozone‐Tmaxrelationships, so we refit the ozone‐Tmaxslope using logistic regression and a generalized Pareto distribution model. We then apply the resulting hybrid‐extreme value theory model to projections of Tmaxfrom an ensemble of downscaled climate models. Assuming constant anthropogenic emissions at the present level, we find an average increase of 2.3 d a−1in ozone episodes (>75 ppbv) across the United States by the 2050s, with a change of +3–9 d a−1at many sites. Current standard of care for muscle-invasive urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) is surgery along with perioperative platinum-based chemotherapy. UCC is sensitive to cisplatin-based regimens, but acquired resistance eventually occurs, and a subset of tumors is intrinsically resistant. Thus, there is an unmet need for new therapeutic approaches to target chemotherapy-resistant UCC. Yes-associated protein (YAP) is a transcriptional co-activator that has been associated with bladder cancer progression and cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer. In contrast, YAP has been shown to induce DNA damage associated apoptosis in non-small cell lung carcinoma. However, no data have been reported on the YAP role in UCC chemo-resistance. Thus, we have investigated the potential dichotomous role of YAP in UCC response to chemotherapy utilizing two patient-derived xenograft models recently established. Constitutive expression and activation of YAP inversely correlated with in vitroand in vivocisplatin sensitivity. YAP overexpression protected while YAP knockdown sensitized UCC cells to chemotherapy and radiation effects via increased accumulation of DNA damage and apoptosis. Furthermore, pharmacological YAP inhibition with verteporfin inhibited tumor cell proliferation and restored sensitivity to cisplatin. In addition, nuclear YAP expression was associated with poor outcome in UCC patients who received perioperative chemotherapy. In conclusion, these results suggest that YAP activation exerts a protective role and represents a pharmacological target to enhance the anti-tumor effects of DNA damaging modalities in the treatment of UCC.

Photon conversion is exhibited in a borate (LKZBSB) glass system containing Eu^3+, and the enhanced characteristic emissions of Eu^3+ with the codoping of Ce^3+ have been verified. A large Judd–Ofelt intensity parameter Ω_2 of Eu^3+ indicates a high asymmetrical and strong covalent environment around rare-earth (RE) ions in LKZBSB glasses and spontaneous emission probability and a maximum emission cross section of the dominant D5_0→F_27 transition were derived to be 370  s^−1 and 1.28×10^−21  cm^2, respectively, revealing the potential UV→visible photon-conversion capacity of Eu^3+. Absolutely quantitative evaluation illustrates that Eu^3+ is a favorable photon-conversion center to achieve high photon-conversion efficiency. The addition of Ce^3+ is beneficial to realizing effective red emission of Eu^3+, which possesses commercial value by decreasing the dopant of expensive europium compounds. As an expectation, this photon-conversion LKZBSB glass system can promote the development of a photon downconversion layer for solar cells, which are particularly used in outer space with intense UV radiation.

Compared with conventionally vibrated concrete (CVC), the rheological properties of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) should be closely controlled in order to satisfy fresh property requirements. Rheology of concrete is normally described by Bingham model. To investigate the effects of various aggregate properties on rheology of SCC, 25 mixtures were studied. It was found that higher aggregate volume, higher fine aggregate to coarse aggregate ratio, smaller aggregate size, and lower aggregate packing density may increase yield stress of SCC mixture. Aggregate size has an insignificant effect on plastic viscosity. Mixtures with slump flow less than 580 mm exhibited anti-thixotropy manner, whereas mixtures with slump flow 630 mm or higher showed thixotropy manner. No clear correlation was observed between plastic viscosity and T50and Tfin the slump-flow test.

We report the fabrication of a tellurite optical fiber with a suspended core design, formed on a 220-nm-wide filament of glass. The fiber was pumped at two different wavelengths (1500 and 2400 nm) using femtosecond pulses generated from an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in order to produce mid-infrared supercontinuum (SC). We observed that SC spectra extending to 3 μm were readily generated. To further optimize the design, detailed numerical study was performed, which revealed how the fiber structural characteristics dramatically influence the spectral broadening because of the changes in the dispersion profile and in turn, the interplay of nonlinear effects that give rise to SC generation. We found that an accurate control of the core shape can be employed to contain the generated SC spectra within well-defined spectral regions or to provide a broad extension of the continuum to beyond 4 μm.

Roll to roll (R2R) UV micro-imprinting lithography was investigated by both experimental and numerical methods. A maximum imprinting velocity without bubble defects was found through experiments and numerical simulations. This velocity changes while the imprinting processes were conducted without cleaning the imprinting roll. The processes of resin filling into patterned cavities were simulated at various resin viscosities, contact angles of resin on substrate and on the roller. The predicted velocity showed a good agreement with experimental measurement. The results indicated that a larger imprinting velocity can be used with lower viscosity resin. It also showed that bubble trapping was affected by the contact angles between resin and mold (substrate). Finally, the influences of pattern aspect ratio in the filling processes were also studied.

Hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (H-DLC) were deposited on GCr15 bearing steel by double cathodes pulse glow discharge (DCPGD) plasma vapour deposition at different gas volume ratios. The surface morphology, composition, microstructure, hardness and friction properties of the H-DLC films were observed. It was found that the sp3bond content and I(D)/I(G) ratio of DLC films were between 58 and 61% and in the range of 0·68–0·88, respectively. When H2:Ar:C2H2gas volume ratio ranges from 4:1:1 to 8:1:1, the I(D)/I(G) ratio decreases with an increase in the sp3bond content, the friction coefficient (about 0·1) and wear rate (between 4·5×10-8and 8·4×10-8mm3N-1m-1) of DLC films were very low. In this study, when H2:Ar:C2H2gas volume ratio is 6:1:1, the thickness of the film is 8·13 µm deposited for is 4 h, the hardness reaches a maximum value (22·5 GPa), the friction coefficient and wear rate reduce to a minimum value, 0·094 and 4·5×10-8mm3N-1m-1, respectively.

An octave-spanning supercontinuum is generated in a hydrogenated amorphous silicon core fiber when pumped in the mid-infrared regime. The broadband wavelength conversion which extends from the edge of the telecommunications band into the mid-infrared (1.64–3.37 μm) is generated by four-wave mixing (FWM) and subsequent pulse break-up, facilitated by the high material nonlinear figure of merit and the anomalous dispersion of the relatively small 1.7 μm diameter core fiber. The FWM sidebands and corresponding supercontinuum can be tuned through the pump parameters, and show good agreement with the predicted phase-matching curves for the fiber.

The launches of the Sentinel‐1 synthetic aperture radar satellites in 2014 and 2016 started a new era of high‐resolution velocity and strain rate mapping for the continents. However, multiple challenges exist in tying independently processed velocity data sets to a common reference frame and producing high‐resolution strain rate fields. We analyze Sentinel‐1 data acquired between 2014 and 2019 over the northeast Tibetan Plateau, and develop new methods to derive east and vertical velocities with ∼100 m resolution and ∼1 mm/yr accuracy across an area of 440,000 km2. By implementing a new method of combining horizontal gradients of filtered east and interpolated north velocities, we derive the first ∼1 km resolution strain rate field for this tectonically active region. The strain rate fields show concentrated shear strain along the Haiyuan and East Kunlun Faults, and local contractional strain on fault junctions, within the Qilianshan thrusts, and around the Longyangxia Reservoir. The Laohushan‐Jingtai creeping section of the Haiyuan Fault is highlighted in our data set by extremely rapid strain rates. Strain across unknown portions of the Haiyuan Fault system, including shear on the eastern extension of the Dabanshan Fault and contraction at the western flank of the Quwushan, highlight unmapped tectonic structures. In addition to the uplift across most of the lowlands, the vertical velocities also contain climatic, hydrological or anthropogenic‐related deformation signals. We demonstrate the enhanced view of large‐scale active tectonic processes provided by high‐resolution velocities and strain rates derived from Sentinel‐1 data and highlight associated wide‐ranging research applications. The new‐generation radar satellites permit the derivation of crustal velocities in fine resolution over continental scales. With the technical advancements developed in this study, we reveal unseen details of the crustal deformation over the earthquake‐prone Hexi Corridor in the northeast corner of the Tibetan Plateau. In particular, we observe concentrated elastic loading along, and at branch points of, major earthquake‐generating faults. The ability to monitor such phenomena is important for understanding future seismic hazard as such geometrical complexities along faults are often associated with earthquake triggering and termination. We also draw attention to previously unknown structures that are rapidly deforming. This new and enhanced view of the local tectonic setting could improve local seismic hazard assessment. Last but not least, we observe climatic, hydrological and anthropogenic signals in the vertical velocity field, which are related to permafrost thawing, blocked river drainage, mining, damming and the extraction of groundwater for farming. Overall, we demonstrate the wealth of information that can be derived from the rapidly growing space‐born Earth observation data, which are destined to play an important role in shaping a more resilient world for the future. In this paper, the tensile properties of plain-woven aramid fabric style 724 (Kevlar® 129 fibre, 1000 denier, 24×24 yarns per inch) and the tensile properties of individual aramid yarn extracted from the fabric are presented. It was found that this fabric is balanced with less than 5% difference in strength between the warp and weft directions. The mechanical properties of the individual yarns were found to be lower than those reported for Kevlar® 129 fibre, which is explained by the fact that the yarns were damaged during the extraction process or weaving process. A 3D finite-element model of the tensile testing of plain-woven fabric was built at the mesoscale in Abaqus/Explicit by modelling individual crimped yarns and taking into account friction. Material properties and yarn geometry for the model were obtained from experimental observations. An orthotropic elastic model with failure criterion based on the yield stress was used. Numerical results were analysed and compared with experimental results. It was found that the numerical model can reproduce the physical experimental observations, the yield strength and the failure strain.

Laser speckle is a kind of noise in triangulation displacement measurement. It’s meaningless to restrain speckles when the imaging light spot is so weak that facular image cannot be extracted from speckles. Speckles can also be viewed as a kind of information carrier of displacement of the interface. In this paper, digital correlation method was used in laser triangulation displacement measurement system to measure the displacement of rough surface with strong scattering and the experimental results were analyzed. The results show that the digital correlation method is feasible in triangulation displacement measurement system, the measuring range can reach micron grade and the experimental errors are below 2%. This method can overcome the disadvantage of traditional laser triangular displacement measurement in rough surface with strong scattering, improve the accuracy and expand the scope of application.
