Today, off-grid communities rely mainly on diesel gensets with limited electrical efficiency and diesel furnaces for electricity and heat generation, respectively. The CO2emissions associated with this electricity production can be reduced by improving the electrical efficiency of the system thus reducing the fuel consumption. Additionally, waste heat from the electricity production can be recovered for heating thus creating a combined heat and power system. In this work, a solid oxide fuel cell combined heat and power system hybridized to a battery was proposed for this purpose. Simulation of the annual electricity and heat production were performed using real temporal electrical demand data. Results showed that a reduction of up to 36 % in primary energy consumption can be reached compared with the current situation.

Background: Weight loss reduces the risk of several diseases. Increases of plasma organochlorine and pesticide compounds, however, have been observed with weight loss induced by a dietary intervention and by a gastroplasty. This increased concentration of toxic pollutants could be a side-effect of weight loss and a risk for health problems. The aim of this study was: 1) to observe if there is a relationship between the plasma concentration of organochlorines and BMI at steady state weight, and 2) to determine, after a bariatric surgical intervention, if the magnitude of the weight loss has a direct effect on this concentration. Methods: Weight loss was obtained in obese individuals by a hypocaloric diet program until resistance and in morbidly obese individuals by a bariatric operation (biliopancreatic diversion - duodenal switch [BPD-DS]). Normal-weight individuals were tested to serve as controls. Blood samples were analyzed for organochlorine and pesticide compounds at baseline in all groups, after resistance to weight loss in obese individuals, and at 3 months and 1 year after surgery in morbidly obese individuals. Results: At steady state weight, organochlorine and pesticide compounds were found in all groups, and the sum of all organochlorine compounds correlated with age and not BMI. Weight loss averaged 12.1% of the initial body weight after dieting and 20.9% at 3 months after surgery, respectively. This weight loss yielded significant increases in total plasma organochlorine concentration (increase of 23.8% for obese and 51.8% for morbidly obese individuals). For morbidly obese individuals, the weight loss at 1 year after surgery (46.3%) yielded a 388.2% increase in total plasma organochlorine concentration. Conclusion: Plasma organochlorine concentration increases with weight loss and is related to the magnitude. Future research will have to determine if: 1) this pollutant concentration remains elevated over time and 2) there are long-term effects of this high concentration on health.

Abstract: The accuracy of our spatially oriented behaviors largely depends on the precision of monitoring the change in body position with respect to space during self-motion. We investigated observers’ capacity to determine, before and after head rotations about the yaw axis, the position of a memorized earth-fixed visual target positioned 21° laterally. The subjects (n=6) showed small errors (mean=–0.6°) and little variability (mean=0.9°) in determining the position of an extinguished visual-target position when the head (and gaze) remained in a straight-ahead position. This accuracy was preserved when subjects voluntary rotated the head by various magnitudes in the direction of the memorized visual target (head rotations ranged between 5° and 60°). However, when the chair on which the subjects were seated was unexpectedly rotated about the yaw axis in the direction of the target (chair rotations ranged between 6° and 36°) during the head-on-trunk rotations, the performance was markedly decreased, both in terms of spatial precision (mean error=5.6°) and variability (mean=5.7°). A control experiment showed that the prior knowledge of chair rotation occurrence had no effect on the perceived target position after head-trunk movements. Updating an earth-fixed target position during head-on-trunk rotations could be achieved through both cervical and vestibular signals processing, but, in the present experiment, the vestibular output was the only signal that had the potentiality to contribute to accurate coding of the target position after simultaneous head and trunk movements. Our results therefore suggest that the vestibular output is a noisy signal for the central nervous signal to update the visual space during head-in-space motion.
