ABSTRACTThe occurrence, concentration and geochemistry of REE-bearing minerals in beach sands along the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand is reported as a proxy for the composition of adjacent uplifted Holocene marine terraces. The strandlines of 13 beaches along this coast contain REE-rich allanite (average: 15% REO), monazite (82% REO) and xenotime (83% REO), with allanite being most common and xenotime having a restricted range. Other REE-rich phases are apatite (average: 2259 ppm), zircon (1756ppm), epidote (761 ppm), titanite (699 ppm) and scheelite. Geographical trends to the distribution of these minerals are not entirely clear, but there is an influx of titanite and allanite north of the Grey River and an increase in apatite, allanite, monazite and epidote north of Little Wanganui River. In-situ trace elements and/or 87Sr/86Sr isotopes indicate allanite, monazite and xenotime to be likely mainly derived from exhumed Paleozoic and Cretaceous granites, with minor amounts from the Alpine Schist metasedimentary rocks. The main source of the analysed apatite is likely also the granitoids, with contributions from the Greenland Group and Alpine Schist. When the REE abundances in the beach sands are compared to the size of the uplifted adjacent Holocene terraces, Waimangaroa terrace may contain the highest concentration of REE, followed by the Little Wanganui and Barrytown terraces.

Reviews of Geophysicsis an AGU journal, first established in February 1963. It is a hybrid open access invitation‐only journal that publishes comprehensive review articles across various disciplines within the Earth and Space Sciences. The selection criteria are rigorous and many submissions are declined without review. The journal is the highest ranked in the fields of Geochemistry and Geophysics, with a high Journal Impact Factor (JIF2021= 24.9), which is indicative of its high visibility and influence within the scientific community. The journal's published review papers, beyond a mere summary of literature, provide crucial context for current work, and establish the framework for comprehensive understanding of research progress, challenges, and interconnections between different communities, so that research may be appreciated by a broad audience. We emphasize the importance of publishing studies that provide a comprehensive overview and synthesis of the current state of knowledge in a field, especially in the case of geophysics, where knowledge is rapidly developing, increasing and becoming more specialized. The technique of multiple collector ICP‐MS (MC‐ICP‐MS) has recently attracted much attention, because it permits the precise measurement of isotope compositions for a wide range of elements. This review article discusses the particular advantages of this mass spectrometric technique and provides an overview of the instrumentation. The performance characteristics of MC‐ICP‐MS instruments and procedures for the correction of instrumental mass discrimination are covered. The strategies that are employed to avoid analytical artefacts from spectral interferences and matrix effects are also considered. A range of applications are then discussed, to provide an overview of the versatility of this mass spectrometric technique. The diversity of applications, which include the measurement of radiogenic and stable isotope ratios, the determination of trace element concentrations by isotope dilution and in situ isotopic measurements using a laser ablation system, highlight the great relevance of MC‐ICP‐MS to present and future research in various Earth science disciplines.
