More and more playful experiences are becoming established in schools, both as tools to motivate students and as a stimulus for teachers to renew skills and disciplinary approaches. The use of games in the classroom, as in the case of escape rooms, makes it possible to create workshop environments to explore choices, experiment with roles and develop transversal skills that are fundamental for tomorrow's citizens. We defined the seismotectonic setting of the external Marche Apennines (central Italy) by integrating geomorphological, structural and seismological data. The area is characterized by strong historical earthquakes, but the geometries and kinematics of the seismogenic sources have not previously been well defined. Plio-Quaternary Apennine compressional NW–SE structures are segmented by NE–SW-oriented transversal faults, the origin and role of which are still debated. We characterized the geometry, kinematics and activity of the four main transversal faults to better define their seismogenic potential. These high-angle, deeply rooted transversal fault systems have been mapped and separate the external Apennine sector into blocks and sub-blocks with different structural and evolutionary features. The integrated dataset showed that some inherited fault segments have recently been reactivated, displacing Quaternary deposits. The spatial distribution of seismicity indicates that some clusters of hypocentres are located within the basement. Stress field analysis using available focal mechanism solutions confirms the prevalence of left-lateral kinematics on roughly SW–NE-oriented structures. The transversal structures thus contribute to the longitudinal segmentation of the Apennine structures and, more generally, are involved in the northern part of the Adria plate kinematics towards the north and NNW. The assessment of seismic hazards and planning to mitigate risks in populated areas close to the Adriatic coast should consider these potentially active faults evidenced by instrumental seismicity and important historical earthquakes. We consider the classical approximation of a realistic model for the scattering of He atoms from Cu surfaces. For this problem, modeled by a two-degrees-of-freedom Hamiltonian system, the existence of chaos has been proven analytically very recently for sufficiently large values of the energy, if some quantity, known as the Stokes constant, is non-zero (Borondo et al., 2024). Taking two different and independent approaches, this paper provides numerical evidence that this is indeed the case. Both approaches provide the same value of the non-zero Stokes constant. • We consider a model for the scattering of Helium atoms on a Copper surface. • We compute the invariant manifolds of parabolic periodic orbits at infinity. • We compute their intersection angle at some suitable Poincaré section using two different strategies. • We prove the existence of chaos. • The chaotic scattering of the incident atoms is related to the transversal intersection of the computed invariant manifolds. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop a new transversal method of lines for one-dimensional reaction–diffusion equations that is conservative and provides piecewise–analytical solutions in space, analyze its truncation errors and linear stability, compare it with other finite-difference discretizations and assess the effects of the nonlinear diffusion coefficients, reaction rate terms and initial conditions on wave propagation and merging. Design/methodology/approach: A conservative, transversal method of lines based on the discretization of time and piecewise analytical integration of the resulting two-point boundary-value problems subject to the continuity of the dependent variables and their fluxes at the control-volume boundaries, is presented. The method provides three-point finite difference expressions for the nodal values and continuous solutions in space, and its accuracy has been determined first analytically and then assessed in numerical experiments of reaction-diffusion problems, which exhibit interior and/or boundary layers. Findings: The transversal method of lines presented here results in three-point finite difference equations for the nodal values, treats the diffusion terms implicitly and is unconditionally stable if the reaction terms are treated implicitly. The method is very accurate for problems with the interior and/or boundary layers. For a system of two nonlinearly-coupled, one-dimensional reaction–diffusion equations, the formation, propagation and merging of reactive fronts have been found to be strong function of the diffusion coefficients and reaction rates. For asymmetric ignition, it has been found that, after front merging, the temperature and concentration profiles are almost independent of the ignition conditions. Originality/value: A new, conservative, transversal method of lines that treats the diffusion terms implicitly and provides piecewise exponential solutions in space without the need for interpolation is presented and applied to someone. In the simulation of axisymmetric fluids, imposing an appropriate numerical boundary condition at the symmetrical axis r = 0 is an inevitable difficulty. To maintaining the conservation property, we choose to keep its form coincided with the numerical scheme on interior control volumes. Then we obtain necessary interface values in both scenarios from solving the two-dimensional generalized Riemann problems (2D GRPs) and their one-sided versions. Therein the effects of transversal variation and geometrical source are specifically emphasized to exhibit the genuine multi-dimensionality of the entire algorithm. In the construction of the one-sided 2D GRP solver, we have to face the difficulty brought by the singularity of the source at r = 0. The ingenious combination of acoustic approximation, symmetry argument, and L'Hospital's rule is proposed in obtaining a pivotal limiting value there. This paper presents a geometric transversals approach for representing the probability of track detection as an analytic function of time and target motion parameters. By this approach, the optimization of the detection probability subject to sensor kinodynamic constraints can be formulated as an optimal control problem. Using the proposed detection probability function, the necessary conditions for optimality can be derived using calculus of variations, and solved numerically using a variational iteration method (VIM). The simulation results show that sensor state and control trajectories obtained by this approach bring about a significant increase in detection probability compared to existing strategies, and require a computation that is significantly reduced compared to direct methods. Recent developments showed that light-cone parton distributions can be studied by investigating the large momentum limit of the so-called quasiparton distributions, which are defined in terms of spacelike correlators, and therefore can be readily computed on the lattice. We present a computer assisted proof of diffusion in the Planar Elliptic Restricted Three Body Problem. We treat the elliptic problem as a perturbation of the circular problem, where the perturbation parameter is the eccentricity of the primaries. The unperturbed system preserves energy, and we show that for sufficiently small perturbations we have orbits with explicit energy changes, independent from the size of the perturbation. Sparse recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive filter algorithms achieve faster convergence and better performance than the standard RLS algorithm under sparse systems. Existing methods are designed by either incorporating a sparse regularization term, e.g., l 1 -norm, into the standard RLS cost function or introducing a proportionate matrix into the updating equation. As the principles behind the two designs are complementary, we propose in this paper to combine them together and develop an enhanced method named the l 1 -proportionate RLS (l 1 -PRLS). Theoretical performance analysis of the proposed l 1 -PRLS is carried out in terms of the first-order and second-order transient property, and steady-state property. Based on the analysis, guidances for the selection of adaptive parameters are obtained. With proper choices of relevant parameters, the l 1 -PRLS is guaranteed to be stable and achieve better performance than existing methods. To improve the applicability of the l 1 -PRLS, a fast implementation named the l 1 -proportionate stable fast transversal filter (l 1 -PSFTF) is also derived. The Kerr geometry is believed to represent the exterior spacetime of astrophysical black holes. We here reanalyze the geometry of Kerr-like metrics (Kerr, Kerr-Newman, Kerr-de Sitter, and Kerr-anti-de Sitter), paying particular attention to the region near the singular set. We find that, although the Kretschmann scalar vanishes at the singular set along a given direction, a certain combination of curvature invariants diverges regardless of the direction of approach. We also find that the two-dimensional geometry induced by the spacetime metric on the orbits of the isometry group also possesses a singularity regardless of the direction of approach. Likewise, the two-dimensional geometry in the directions orthogonal to the isometry orbits is C²-divergent, but extends continuously at the singular set as a cone with opening angle 4π. We conclude by showing that tidal forces lead to infinite stresses on neighboring geodesics that approach the singular set, destroying any such observers in finite proper time. Those geodesics that come in from infinity and do not hit the singular set but approach it are found to need tremendous energy to get close to the singular set, experiencing an acceleration transversal to the equatorial plane which grows without bound when the minimal distance of approach goes to zero. While establishing these results, we also present an alternative description of some other known properties, as well as introducing toroidal coordinates that provide a hands-on description of the double covering for the geometry near the singular set. Surface and color codes are two forms of topological quantum error correction in two spatial dimensions with complementary properties. Surface codes have lower-depth error detection circuits and well-developed decoders to interpret and correct errors, while color codes have transversal Clifford gates and better code efficiency in the number of physical qubits needed to achieve a given code distance. A formal equivalence exists between color codes and folded surface codes, but it does not guarantee the transferability of any of these favorable properties. However, the equivalence does imply the existence of constant-depth circuit implementations of logical Clifford gates on folded surface codes. We achieve and improve this result by constructing two families of folded surface codes with transversal Clifford gates. This construction is presented generally for qudits of any dimension.
