A novel compositional accommodation mechanism in perovskite (ABO3) SrNbO3thin films was revealed by field‐emission analytical electron microscopy (AEM). A new analytical methodology for estimating localized structures such as planar faults is also presented. The method was applied for investigating the compositional accommodation mechanism of B‐ion‐rich SrNbO3epitaxial thin films. Two types of accommodation mechanism—formation of B‐ion‐rich amorphous phase and (110)‐located high‐density planar defects—were revealed. Summary: Hematite is a characteristic mineral of Liesegang rock in the pyrophyllite ore deposits, Shobara district, southwestern Japan. The mineral intimately coexists with fine-grained pyrophyllite and quartz. The hematite crystals are characteristically needle-shaped to fibrous, and several microns in length, and can only be observed by high-magnification reflected light microscopy with oil immersion lens. They occur as ring-shaped aggregates several tens of microns in diameter. Moreover, the crystals are often arranged radially within the rings. Microprobe analyses reveal that hematite crystals are almost pure iron oxide, with less than 0.9 wt.% Ti. X-ray powder diffraction patterns and reflection intensities indicate that hematite is the only iron mineral in the Liesegang rock, i.e., no hydrous iron oxides are present. This observation was also confirmed by examinations of water content and infrared spectroscopy.

Trockene Eisensulfidschmelzen mit Zusätzen von Co und/oder Ni oder Cu wurden von sehr hohen Temperaturen schnell auf Zimmertemperatur abgeschreckt. Durch anschließendes l0monatiges Tempern bei 100, 160 und 185 °C gelang die Synthese von Mackinawit, (Fe,Co,Ni,Cu)1+xS. Die sorgfältige Durchmusterung von im Dachang-Distrikt, Guangxi-Provinz, China, gesammelten Erzen lenkte die Aufmerksamkeit auf ungewöhnlich anmutenden Jamesonit, welcher bei der Analyse augenfällige As-Gehalte und zumindest teilweise die Substitution von Pb durch Sn erkennen ließ. Experimentell konnte Pb4-xSnxFeSb6S14 (x = 0-3,5) problemlos hergestellt werden. Höhere Zinngehalte ergaben die zusätzliche Bildung von Berthierit und bleifreiem Sn2Sb2S5. Der Einbau von Zn für Fe ins Jamesonitgitter ist außerordentlich begrenzt. Ein Hg-Zinnkies idealisiert Cu2HgSnS4, verwachsen mit Hg-haltigem Kösterit, wurde in Quiruvilca/Peru-Erzen identifiziert. Interessante Mineralkombinationen fanden sich in einem Gang der Hock Aun Mine, nahe Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; neben herkömmlichen Mineralien fanden sich u.a. reichlich Kösterit und Helvin. Die mineralogische Abfolge läßt sich aus den Mineralverwachsungen herleiten. Ähnlich wird die Abfolge anhand von Mineralverwachsungen der Colquiri-Lagestätte, Bolivien, interpretiert, nämlich unter Zuhilfenahme von experimentellen Ergebnissen in Kombination mit Literaturdaten über Flüssigkeitseinschlüsse. Die fortgeführte Untersuchung des Ag-Ge-Sn-S-Systems, durchgeführt bei 400 °C, ergab neben schon bekannten Mineralien und Phasen sowie deren Mischkristallreihen u.a. zwei weitere quaternäre Sulfidverbindungen, Ag5(Ge,Sn)4±xS9 und Ag3Ge5Sn5S15. Bei der Sulfidisierung von Cu4SnS4 entstehen Covellin und Cu3SnS4. Diese ternäre Phase läßt sich in zwei Modifikationen erhalten, die jeweils als Überstrukturen des Wurtzits und des Zinkblendetyps anzusehen sind. Ganz analoges Verhalten zeigt Cu3GeS4, welches ebenfalls durch Sulfidisierung von Cu4GeS4 zu erhalten ist. Über Thalliummineralien und hierher gehörende Stoffsysteme sind wenig Informationen erhältlich, was zur Untersuchung des Systems Tl2S-Sb2S3-S Anlaß gab, und zwar über den gesamten geologisch relevanten Temperaturbereich. Neben den Mineralien Carlinit, Weissbergit, Parapierrotit und Antimonit existieren noch Tl3SbS3, Tl3SbS4 und Tl3Sb5S11. In der Phase Tl3SbS4 liegt fünfwertiges Antimon vor, wie sich mit Hilfe der Mössbauer-Spektroskopie nachweisen ließ. Bei den detaillierten Untersuchungen wurde eine Revision des komplizierten Tieftemperaturbereichs auf der Tl-reichen Seite des binären Tl-Sb-Systems notwendig. Schließlich wurden die Mineralsysteme Kupferglanz-Carlinit, Argentit/Akanthit-Carlinit und Bleiglanz-Carlinit in bezug auf Mischkristallbildung und stabile Phasen untersucht, nämlich CuTlS, Cu3T1S2, Cu9TlS5; AgTlS, Ag3TlS2 sowie Tl4PbS3. Einige dieser Phasen sind als natürlich vorkommende Mineralien denkbar. Bei niedrigen Temperaturen durchgeführte Hydrothermalversuche und trockene Sulfidsynthesen führten zur Darstellung Cu-haltigen Polydymits und des wenig bekannten Minerals Fletcherit, Cu(Co,Ni)2S4. Überwiegend gemmologisches Interesse dürften mit Hilfe des Gitterspektrographen durchgeführte Spurenanalysen von Chrysoberyllen haben; charakteristische Spurenelementgehalte von Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Cu, Nb und Sn erlauben Rückschlüsse auf die Herkunft der betreffenden Edelsteine.

This study was designed to evaluate the developmental toxicity of nitrazepam (NZ) in Sprague-Dawley rats and ICR mice and to determine the metabolic factors which modulate susceptibility to the developmental effects of NZ. Rats were treated orally with a single dose of NZ at 300 mg/kg on Day 12 of gestation. Mice received one dose of 300 mg/kg NZ via gavage between Days 9 and 14 of gestation. NZ administration resulted in a significant incidence of malformations in rats, while no evidence of teratogenic action was observed in mice. Pronounced species differences in the metabolism of NZ were observed. In rats, 7-acetylaminonitrazepam (AANZ) was detected as the major metabolite in plasma and embryos, whereas in mice, only small amounts of this product were found. The rate of N-acetylation of 7-aminonitrazepam (ANZ) to AANZ was 8.5-fold greater in rat liver cytosol than that in mouse liver cytosol. In contrast, the rate of deacetylation of AANZ to ANZ was 9-fold greater in mouse liver microsomes than that in rat liver microsomes. The developmental effects of authentic metabolites of NZ were studied in the two species. A single oral administration of 300 mg/kg ANZ to pregnant animals produced a significant incidence of malformations in rats, but not in mice. On the other hand, AANZ was teratogenic in both species. These results suggest that the difference in the susceptibility to NZ-induced teratogenicity between rats and mice may be related to differences in the levels of N-acetyltransferase and deacetylase, and that AANZ may be involved in the teratogenic mechanism.Copyright 1993, 1999 Academic Press

Carboplatin (cis-Diammine-l, l-cyclobutane dicarboxylate platinum II; CBDCA) is a second generation platinum analog with less nephrotoxicity and cochlear ototoxicity than cisplatin, the first generation platinum chemotherapeutic agent. Studies in many animal species have indicated that carboplatin ototoxicity is expressed as damage to cochlear outer hair cells. The lesion is similar, though less severe, than that resulting from cisplatin intoxication. Recent investigations by our laboratory have demonstrated a species-specific ototoxicity of carboplatin in the chinchilla cochlea. Contrary to other animal models, the inner hair cells are the focus of damage; the outer hair cells often sustain little or no damage. Clinical evidence points to vestibular dysfunction in some patients treated with platinum-containing anti-tumoural agents. However, no morphological studies have shown degeneration of the sensory cells in the vestibular labyrinth resulting from carboplatin treatment. The objective of the present study was to determine whether, in view of its unique toxicity in the chinchilla, carboplatin has any toxic effect on the vestibular end organs. Preliminary investigations of the vestibule by light and scanning electron microscopy indicate that sensory cell cilia became exfoliated or deformed in the crista, utricle and in one instance in the saccule. In general the pattern of damage is similar to that caused by other known ototoxic agents including aminoglycosides and cisplatin.

Summary Selenium traces in valleriite are known, but their actual position in the structure remains to be clarified. This has been attempted in this study, the complete valleriite-selenium valleriite solid solution series (with chalcopyrite and cubanite layers) were sythesized under hydrothermal conditions at 450°C and 1 kb pressure in collapsible gold tubes.
