•Experience regarding daptomycin for the treatment of osteomyelitis is limited.•In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, the aim was to evaluate the outcomes of osteomyelitis cases having received daptomycin or teicoplanin.•Clinical success at the end of induction therapy was achieved in 32/38 cases in daptomycin cohort vs. 30/34 cases in teicoplanin cohort (p: 0.73).•Although this is a limited experience in a small but well-defined cohort, our data suggest that daptomycin may be a safe alternative to glycopeptides in osteomyelitis treatment.

Le dysfonctionnement olfactif est l’une des comorbidités associées à la rhinite allergique (RA) et celle-ci est l’une des causes les plus fréquentes de troubles olfactifs. Notre objectif était d’évaluer les effets des corticostéroïdes par voie nasale et des antagonistes des leucotriènes utilisés dans la rhinite allergique, sur les fonctions olfactives à l’aide du test Sniffin’ Sticks.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of bone is a relatively new technique that appears to assess 'bone quality' in addition to bone mineral density. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic potential of QUS of calcaneum and to correlate it with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in chronic haemodialysis patients.

Summary—The dynamics of the cationic and secretory response to A‐4166, a hypoglycemic meglitinide analogue, was investigated in rat islets prelabelled with either 86Rb or 45Ca and placed in a perifusion system. In the absence of D‐glucose, A‐4166 (10 μM) provoked an immediate, sustained and rapidly reversible inhibition of 86Rb outflow, this contrasting with a short‐lived stimulation of insulin release. In the presence of 6 mM D‐glucose, A‐4166 provoked a rapid, sustained and rapidly reversible stimulation of both insulin release and 45Ca efflux. The latter cationic response was suppressed in the absence of extracellular Ca2+, in which case A‐4166 even caused a modest decrease in effluent radioactivity.

The non-sulphonylurea hypoglycaemic agent repaglinide is about one order of magnitude less potent, in terms of insulinotropic efficiency, than S3075, another meglitinide analogue. In the present study, the effects of these two drugs upon86Rb outflow,45Ca efflux and insulin release from prelabelled rat pancreatic islets were investigated in a perifusion system. At a concentration of 10μM, which is sufficient to evoke a maximal secretory response in incubated islets, both agents inhibited86Rb efflux from islets perifused in the absence ofD-glucose, and stimulated both45Ca efflux and insulin release from islets perifused in the presence of 6mMD-glucose. The stimulation of45Ca efflux from prelabelled islets was suppressed in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. The cationic and secretory response to repaglinide differed, however, from that evoked by S3075, in persisting for at least 20min after removal of the drug from the perifusion medium, whilst the changes in86Rb outflow,45Ca efflux and insulin release caused by S3075 were rapidly reversible. These findings indicate that there is no parallel between the insulinotropic efficiency of distinct meglitinide analogues, and the reversibility of their functional effects. Since a comparable dissociation was recently documented in the case of hypoglycaemic sulphonylureas, the present observations reinforce the view that distinct molecular determinants may rule the relative insulinotropic potency of sulphonylureas and structurally related meglitinide analogues, on one hand, and the reversibility of their biological action, on the other hand.

Wound infection after a surgical procedure is one of the main problems affecting the success of an operation. The prepuce is used in hypospadias surgery and in tissue defects in reconstructive surgery. The objective of this study is to determine the efficacy of povidone‐iodine and surgical soap in preputial skin preparation. Ninety‐four healthy children were divided into three groups. After obtaining preputial skin swabs, an application of povidone‐iodine 10% was made and skin swabs were obtained after two and five minutes in group 1. An additional application of povidone‐iodine after two minutes was made in group 2 and swabs taken. Group 3 received a local scrub with surgical soap and an application of povidone‐iodine. Results showed that, despite painting with povidone‐iodine and/or local cleaning with surgical soap, it is not possible totally to eradicate the micro‐organisms in the prepuce. Surgical soap decreases the colony count, which can lead to increased effectiveness of povidone‐iodine after painting. We recommend preoperative local cleaning with surgical soap before surgical painting.

ABSTRACTA simple and rapid technique for the determination of furfural in the culture medium, which contains this compound as a degradation product of xylose at autoclave conditions, was evaluated. Besides, the growth and the furfural metabolism of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe has been monitored using spectral methods.
