Telehealth enhances communication across distances, facilitates teamwork, and increases access to care, particularly in rural areas. As the use of telehealth technology assimilates into clinical practice, its integration is also needed in clinical curricula. This project assessed the feasibility and acceptability to engage distance-based students in pediatric clinical simulations using a telepresence robot. Students participated in two pediatric scenarios in teams of three to four prelicensure nursing students, with one nurse practitioner student participating via a telepresence robot. Forty-eight prelicensure and 5 nurse practitioner students completed surveys following clinical simulations. It was feasible to use a telepresence robot as a tool in clinical simulation, and students reported high mean scores on the feasibility and acceptability of using the robot. Although there are challenges, incorporating telepresence technology into simulations opens up many opportunities for student engagement with patients and other clinicians, and affords students with an opportunity to actively participate in their distance-based education., The adoption of telehealth technologies eliminates location as a barrier to accessing quality health care (Aaltonen, Niemel, & Tammela, 2017; Henderson et al., 2013; Kvedar, Coye, & Everett, 2014; Marcolino, [...]

Children with life-threatening illness (C-LTI) experience considerable symptom distress. Mobile technology may offer opportunities to better obtain symptom data that will lead to better symptom management. A mixed-methods study was conducted to explore the feasibility of monitoring and visualizing symptoms using 2 mobile health devices in C-LTI. Participants engaged with the Apple Watch 56% and recorded in the study app 63% of their study days. Our findings showed feasibility of using mobile technology for monitoring symptoms and further explored opportunities to visualize these data showing symptom occurrences, patterns, and trajectories in C-LTI.

AbstractStaphylococcus aureusis a frequent and major contagious mastitis bacterial pathogen. The antibiotic treatment cure rates vary considerably from 4% to 92%. Staphylococcus aureusreadily becomes resistant to antibiotics, resulting in persistent noncurable intramammary infection that usually results in culling of infected animals. Because of its notorious ability to acquire resistance to the commonly used as well as last resort antimicrobials such as methicillin and vancomycin and the development of multidrug-resistant strains, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in S. aureusis of paramount importance in human medicine. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of AMR and genetic diversity of S. aureusisolates from milk of dairy cattle. Staphylococcus aureusisolates (n= 239) from 33 dairy farms in Tennessee were tested against 10 antimicrobials by broth microdilution method using the Sensititer system. Genetic diversity of resistant isolates was evaluated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Overall, AMR of the S. aureusisolates varied from as low as 1.3% for ceftiofur to as high as 25% for sulfadimethoxine. Out of 239 S. aureusisolates, 82 (34.3%) of them were resistant to at least 1 of the 10 antimicrobials. The AMR isolates belonged to two major PFGE types, indicating the presence of dominant clonal patterns among the resistant isolates. In general, there was a variation of prevalence of AMR within and among farms over time, with an increasing trend in tetracycline resistance. Judicious use of antimicrobials in dairy cattle farms can reduce the development of antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus.

We describe a pilot study that incorporated an innovative hybrid simulation designed to increase the perception of realism in a high-fidelity simulation. Prelicensure students (N = 12) cared for a manikin in a simulation lab scenario wearing Google Glass, a wearable head device that projected video into the students’ field of vision. Students reported that the simulation gave them confidence that they were developing skills and knowledge to perform necessary tasks in a clinical setting and that they met the learning objectives of the simulation. The video combined visual images and cues seen in a real patient and created a sense of realism the manikin alone could not provide.

Introduction:Youth undergoing blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) experience significant distress. The widespread and mainstream use of mHealth technologies such as smartphone applications offer a unique opportunity to collect patient-generated health data that can enhance patients' and clinicians' understanding of symptom onset, trajectories, and inter-relationships. Network analysis (NA) is a useful tool that can illuminate inter-relationships between symptoms, leading to better collective understanding of the symptom experiences of these youths. This knowledge can lead to enhanced patient-caregiver interactions/collaborations, treatment management, and potentially support improved inference around adverse clinical outcomes.

Introduction:Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant (PBMT) is an intense treatment fraught with significant symptom burden for patients. Mobile health (mHealth) and wearable technologies provide patient generated health data which may enhance understanding of complex symptom patterns, trajectories, and interactions. Improved monitoring and understanding may result in the development of precision symptom management strategies, yet limited research exists for integrating these technologies into acute patient care.
