Dysprosium metal promoted Barbier‐type allylation of ketones and aldehydes has been investigated. It has been shown that dysprosium metal (activated by mercuric chloride) is effective in promoting the reaction of ketones with allyl iodide. The corresponding homoallylic alcohols are obtained in satisfactory yields. This reaction is regioselective and chemoselective. An α, β‐unsaturated ketone affords a 1,2‐addition product selectively. Reactive groups (such as Cl, Br, and methoxy) of aromatic ketones remain unchanged under the reaction conditions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Heteroatom Chem 9:475–478, 1998

Aromatic nitro compounds have been found to be selectively reduced to azoxy compounds in good yields by NaBH4 in the presence of bismuth powder.

In the presence of water, metallic tin and propargyl bromide reacted smoothly with aldehydes to give the corresponding homopropargyl alcohols (a) and homoallenyl alcohols (b). High Chemospecifity to bifounctional carbonyl compounds containing -OH, -X and -NO2 etc. was obtained.

AbstractMetallic antimony catalyzes the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds to the corresponding N-arylhydroxylamines in good yields with NaBH4under mild conditions. The azoxybenzenes from autoxidation of N-arylhydroxylamines were also obtained in basic conditions.

Use of the calcium-ethylenediamine and sodium-liquid ammonia reduction systems for the ring opening of dihydropyran derivatives was studied. (Z)-Alkenyl alcohols and (E)-alkenyl alcohols were stereoselectively synthesized respectively.
